Denver Nuggets

2007-08 Record: 50-32

Cool 2007 Stat: Allen Iverson is always full of awesome stats. This season, he became the oldest player (32) to average 26 points, 7 assists and 41 minutes a game.

Anticipated Starting Five

PG- Chucky Atkins
SG- Allen Iverson
SF- Carmelo Anthony
PF- Kenyon Martin
C- Nene Hilario

Bench: Anthony Carter, J.R. Smith, Linas Kleiza, Renaldo Balkman, Steven Hunter

Biggest Strength – Scoring

Denver had the 3rd and 4th leading scorers in the league, and they both shot over 45% from the field (45.8 for AI and 49.2 for Melo).  That is pretty damn good offensively.  Factoring in J.R. Smith off the bench and these guys are still going to put up some points.  Have some prolific scorers also makes it much easier for Denver’s other players to get good shots as well.  But I’d like to point out the potential loss they will have with Camby gone. He is a good screener and an even better high-post passer (lobs to Melo).  Those are skills I don’t think Nene is as strong in. Unless Nene can make up for that by being a consistent scorer in the post, losing defensive-minded Marcus Camby will hurt Denver in the half court offense more than many may think.

Biggest Weakness – Defense

Who controls the paint now that Marcus Camby is gone?  Denver basically gave away a guaranteed 3-4 blocks per game, 1 steal per game and countless other shot alterations per game.  Camby covered up a lot of weak perimeter defense and mistakes, and I am not confident Nene is capable of filling his shoes.  They also lost the 2nd best rebounder in the NBA last season who also happens to be a strong outlet passer after defensive rebounds.  This team is clearly going in the wrong direction.  They will score points, but even worse than last season, they will continue to lose games 115 – 129.

Key Player in ’08- Nene Hilario

Without Camby, this team’s frontcourt is laughable. The two starting forwards have missed a combined 282 games in the last 3 years. If either of them gets injured, they have only Steven Hunter and Renaldo Balkman backing them up. The key on this team this year is Nene playing 82 games and playing up to his potential. He appeared to break out during the 06-07 playoffs when he went for 15 points, 8 rebounds and even 2.5 assists per game. But he never got off the ground last season, and if he doesn’t again this year, it’s going to be a long one for the Nuggets.

Their Thaddeus (exciting player 22 or under) – J.R. Smith, 22

At 22, Smith can shoots the lights out and has enough athleticism that he can do this. Yet, even at this young age, he’s already been pigeon-holed as a 3-point specialist with attitude problems. But some 3-point specialist he is. Smith has hit 43 more 3-pointers before the age of 23 than any other player in NBA history. The question is, can he develop himself? Can he expand his game to the point that he can be a go-to scorer and not just a role player? He’s certainly got time to do it, the question is whether he has the drive.

Pete’s 2008 Outlook: 4th place, Northwest division / 11th place, Western conference /20th place, NBA

The Nuggets are my second favorite team after the Sixers because they have Iverson, but I think that they are going to completely implode this year. They had a bad defense with Marcus Camby, and they are going to be awful without him. Melo is already on edge because they inexplicably tried to trade him. Iverson will be frustrated because he hates losing. George Karl isn’t really great at handling these kinds of situations. I have them at 11th, but I think it could be worse, especially if they dump Iverson mid-season. After Melo and Iverson, they don’t have enough to compete.

Dannie’s 2008 Outlook: 3rd place, Northwest division / 10th place, Western conference /20th place, NBA

Denver doesn’t make the playoffs for the first time since the ‘02-’03 season.  That is sad for me to say because I always root for Allen Iverson.  And I honestly wouldn’t put it past him to will Denver into the playoffs even if it is just to lose another 1st round match-up with the Lakers.  No one player is going to replace everything Camby brought to the defensive end.  It starts with each individual player committing to and playing much better defense.  Their run-and-gun, play very little defense style hasn’t been a winning formula and won’t be this year either.  The only way this team has any shot of success is to start getting it done on defense as a unit.  Honestly I have no idea who the leader is on the team.  You would think it’s Melo, but I would put my money on it being Iverson.  So for me the key is Anthony stepping up and becoming a real leader.  If Melo wants to keep the Nuggets’ playoff appearance streak since he got there alive, he needs to set the tone with his aggressiveness and effort defensively.

Philly Connection: Allen Iverson
Allen Iverson
I miss watching Iverson play every day, but I think we traded him at the right time. Iverson is one of the greatest Sixers ever and left with the following ranks in team history: 2nd in points, 1st in points per game, 3rd in assists, 2nd in steals, 1st in turnovers, 6th in games played, 1st in 3-pointers and 9th in defensive rebounds. He’s currently 33 and has 22,988 points, 5,228 assists and 1,876 steals. If he plays 2 more seasons at 22 points, 7 assists, and 2 steals per game and then 2 seasons at 17 points, 6 assists and 1 steal per game, and let’s say 70 games a year, he would finish with 28,448 points, 7,048 assists and 2,296 steals. That would put him 5th all-time in points (behind Abdul-Jabbar, Malone, Jordan and Chamberlain), 13th in assists (just ahead of Bob Cousy) and 6th in steals. Oscar Robertson is the only player who is top 15 in all 3 categories.

I miss watching Iverson every day too, but that’s what NBA League Pass is for.  I still try to catch the Nuggets whenever I can.

I agree that they are going backwards.  If they are going to go down, I’d love to see them light it up every night.  It would be fun to watch Iverson, Anthony, and Smith metaphorically put on the throwback jerseys of English, Issel, and Vandeweghe (maybe Atkins could slip into a retro Fat Lever as well) and put up some pinball numbers.

Iverson was a joy to watch, especially in person where you could really appreciate his size.

Without Camby, it’s hard to see Denver going anywhere. They very well might be a train wreck.

3 Pete 10.02.08 at 2:12 pm

Morty-

you are dead on about seeing him in person. its unbelievable to see him close up and realize just how small he is. the shots he makes look all the more difficult in person.
i went to his return game last year. it was awesome.

Yeah, AI was/is pretty amazing for his speed, quickness, fearlessness and scoring hunger/knack.  But what about Muggsy Bogues (5′3″), Spud Webb (5′7) and Earl Boykins (5′5″)?  Now THAT is what I call pickin’ up your game!  Each of those guys deserve major props for their success.  Hearts the size of Texas is what it took.  Incredible.

I just looked at how I ended my last post.  Pinball numbers?  Very dated.  Much more appropriate to say video game numbers.  Even though I used that reference, I’m not that old.  Really!

bski, Don’t worry.  It’s well-established that you were a snot-nosed, knee-scrapin’ toddler when Jim Hart was entering his prime and throwing gridiron darts on Sundays.  You’re not expected to know everything.  Relax.  Enjoy your middle-age passage.  The best is yet to come!

For the first time since Carmelo Anthony was drafted and the “powder blue” jerseys were worn, the Denver Nuggets could miss the playoffs!!  Now with Marcus Camby and a number of other defensive players (yes, there were some!!) gone from that team, it is evident that they would not make it.

Greatest strength(s):
-OFFENSE (obviously, that’s half the battle)
-Pepsi Center (great arena, fans, & altitude advantage!!)
-Best scoring duo: Carmelo Anthony & Allen Iverson (espec)
-Bench does give a lift!!

Weakness(es):
-DEFENSE (obviously, the other half is a battle!!)
-No commitment to improving overall
-Frontcourt (especially in posting up)
1)Marcus Camby, gone!!  Defensive Player of the Year!!
2)Nene is playing with a bad tumor
3)Steven Hunter has played very little
 4)Chris Andersen is still recovering
5)Reggie Evans is sorely missed hustle wise!!
-Missed out on Josh Smith!
-Lack of a true point guard
1)Andre Miller, one of the best point guards and best lobber!!
 2)Steve Blake
 -Extra hustle and energy
 1)Najera
 2)Boykins
-What is their goal this season?
-What will their goal be in the future?
-What is George Karl doing in lighting a fire on his team?
-Competition in the West is tough!!

With that said, it is going to be rough for the Nuggets.  I hear though, they are invited more players to training camp that are defensive minded. (Ruben Patterson + Smush Parker).  That’s a start, but far from over though!!

Allen Iverson went to Denver in hopes of winning a championship.  He had that chance with the Sixers in 2001.  He will be a free agent in 2009.  Can Carmelo convert his Olympic play to the NBA and put behind whatever off-court problems he has.

With that said, the Nuggets are going to 3rd in the Northwest Division, 11th in the West!)

(On a side note, the Sixers will sweep the Nuggets (2-0).  I would not be surprised though if they split the season and have the Nuggets win one at home, due to one person– Allen Iverson and his passion for the game!!  But the rest of the Nuggets cast is very questionable and our frontcourt is going to have a field day in the paint.  Plus, I hope Jason Smith can tag along with the team to Denver to see his family.  Maybe the team might have a Christmas feast at his family’s since the game will be on December 26th!!)

And yes, I am still an Allen Iverson fan!!  But I’m still Sixers first.

Please do not delete these and I was at last year’s game when AI returned to Philly.  It was an electrifying experience and a great win-win situation.  I just wished ESPN showed that game last year.  They are going to show it this year!!

Whenever the Sixers take on the Nuggets recently, Zumoff would have a tendency to say “Yes!” or “Down It Goes!” with excitement when Iverson scores, without realizing that he is a Nugget now!!  LOL

9 Dannie 10.03.08 at 9:23 am

The return game was great.  I got some good picture of the intro when the crowd was going crazy when it was all dark and only a spotlight on him when he got introduced.

The game played out well for the Sixers, but I can lie I wanted to see AI go for 50.

10 Rob 10.03.08 at 9:40 am

According to Peter Vecsey (New York Post), the Nuggets would acquire Jamaal Tinsley from the Pacers in exchange for Chucky Atkins and Steven Hunter!!

http://www.nypost.com/seven/10032008/sports/moresports/tinsley_dealt_to_nuggets_131908.htm

One banged up player in exchange for two banged up players!!

11 Rob 10.03.08 at 9:45 am

Now there is talk according to the IndyStar.com saying that NO such deal is made!!

Then again, Vecsey has been incorrect on many occasions. We’ll be on the lookout before the regular season begins!!

12 The Greek 10.04.08 at 11:56 am

Dannie,  you need to get back to talking sixers.  Since you began this 30 team review there have been sxer blogs birthed everywhere.  And there talking hardcore sixer basketball.  I always check here, because you were one of the few blogs along with depressed that remained after Marc took his keyboard and went home.  O know that the Phillies are in the playofff, but dont forget about the sixers dogg.

13 Dannie 10.04.08 at 12:44 pm

Greek – More Sixers stuff is coming including the first of two previews.

14 Rob 10.04.08 at 1:29 pm

Next up, the Central Division!!

15 The Greek 10.04.08 at 6:22 pm

Much obliged Danny, looking fowward to it man

16 kavan 10.11.08 at 1:28 pm

You guys are beyond crazy if you believe the nuggs wont make the playoffs… In fact you will grow to realize the nuggs are legit contenders for the ship… Yes i said it. Yes we lost Camby and at first i almost had an heart attack but i like how the roster is shaping up with the addition of balkman, andersen and jones we have multiple defenders and rebounders thought not one of these guys by themselves can compare to Camby together they bring defense rto multiple positions instead of one. Also the nuggs realise they suck on defensive so they have being correcting it all off season so expect to see more focus on the defensive end and to top it off Carmelo is ready to have is mvp like season he may not win it but as long as he is a mvp candidate at the end of the season the nuggs will be the suprise of the league… oh did i mention ALLEN IVERSON need i say more

17 Dannie 10.11.08 at 1:51 pm

Kavan – They got swept in the first round of the playoffs last season, lost a key player and didn’t make any substantial additions.  How are they all of a sudden contenders?

I’m not sure if you noticed but the Nuggets are preparing to rebuild that entire team.  Moving Camby was just the first step.  Next will be not resigning Allen Iverson after this season.  That will likely leave Melo, Nene, Smith, Martin and maybe Kleiza.

18 Noah the Omnicient Narrator 10.21.08 at 1:39 am

Melo and dre took the team to the playoffs almost by themselves in 03. You guys are underestimating this team. Camby was a great shot blocker and I loved him, but the other players became lazy on D because of him. Also he couldn’t defend the center position. So you will see. The denver nuggets will in fact be an IMPROVED defensive team. They still wont be good, but theyll be better. And they may not make the playoffs, but 4th in the division? Please.

19 Dannie 10.21.08 at 9:52 am

Noah - Sounds like wishful thinking on your part to me.  Because Camby isn’t defending the rim guys will play better defense – come on.  Not sure where you are from but on this blog we have watched Allen Iverson play here in Philly for a very very long time, he isn’t going to all of a sudden change the gambling style of defense he has been playing his entire career.  We love him here but we also recognize where he isn’t as strong and keeping guys in front consistently was not at the top of the list of strengths for him.  Now without one of the best shot blockers in the NBA back there cleaning up that fact will be amplified.

My friend Pete has this infatuation with the Timberwolves this season, but I think Denver will be 3rd in the division.

“the other players became lazy on D because of him”

Doesn’t that say a lot about the type of players on this team?  If they were true winners “becoming lazy” wouldn’t be part of their DNA.
