Minor Update: BP’s Top-11 Prospects Show Phils’ System’s Improvement

prospects

Baseball Prospectus released the first legit Top prospects list for the Phillies today (no, mine doesn't count as legit) and the rankings show a marked improvement in the Phillies system over the last couple years. In their prospect rankings, BP ranks players anywhere from a 2-5 stars and they are very stingy in giving out high rankings, so don't compare the stars to basketball or football H.S. recruiting sites. Below, I have made a chart that shows BP's rankings of the Phillies prospects … [Read more...]

Eagles Blow…Opportunity: Lose to Redskins

Eagles Redskins Football

Despite how it may have felt, the Eagles did not get eliminated from playoff contention this afternoon. They can still get in, as hard as they've tried not to, if they beat Dallas and Tampa Bay loses to 4-11 Oakland at home. I wouldn't bet on either, but at the very least, even if Tampa wins, we need to beat Dallas to keep them out of the playoffs.  Now on to today's game, and I'm going to keep it short so that people can talk about what they saw. I think that the main theme of everyone's … [Read more...]

Sixers Continue to Frustrate in Loss to Indiana

Do you know the last time the Sixers won their 4th straight game?  46 games ago on March 19th, 2008 against the Denver Nuggets.  That's a long ass time and tonight is set up nicely for the Sixers to break that streak. Indiana will be without Danny Granger, Troy Murphy and Marquis Daniels all hit with the flu bug.  Indiana is coming off a ridiculous double overtime loss last night in which T.J. Ford, Brandon Rush and Jarret Jack played a combined 141 minutes.  Not to mention the Sixers are … [Read more...]

Sixers Beat Washington But Where’s the Defense

Marreese Speights bangs on Juan Dixon

Game starts in just under an hour - what is your starting lineup and why? You could go: Sammy, Speights, Iguodala, Willie, Miller Sammy, Thad, Iguodala , Willie, Miller Sammy, Speights, Iguodala, Thad, Miller Sammy, Thad, Iguodala , Lou, Miller Sammy, Speights, Iguodala, Lou, Miller Or something more creative.  But with Brand out the Sixers need to do whatever it takes to keep this season afloat and their playoff hopes a live.  Tonight is a must win considering their upcoming … [Read more...]

Phillies Ramblings: Fun With Statistics

batbull

One of the things that made me want to start a blog was the fact that I spent entirely too much time playing around with statistics and then only had disinterested friends to share them with. Now I have the disinterested masses on the internet. Much, much better.  Here are some cool Phillies stats that I've calculated recently...  Ryan Howard had 8 more HR and 16 more RBI than any player in baseball last year. Only 6 times before has a player won both these titles by that margin. Babe … [Read more...]

Sixers vs. Milwaukee: Will We See A New Sixers Team Tonight?

Tony DiLeo has one game and now 2 full practices under his belt.  He has also been holding individual meetings with every player to ensure they know their clearly defined role and are with the new management-led Sixers program.  So will we start to see the first signs of change?  DiLeo has been fairly open about the new direction and style he wants the Sixers to play.  With those comments in mind here's how we will be able to see the DiLeo effect on the Sixers' play... More pushing the … [Read more...]

Phillies Opening Day Rosters: 2004-2009

Phillies Opening Day Roster 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009

Note: Chart is clearer in Firefox or Google Crome. If you only have IE, click on the linked picture.  With the Phillies roster more or less set, I wanted to look at how the team has transformed over the years and compare this squad to the recent ones. I put together this chart of the opening day rosters for the team since 2004. The only players that will be on the 2009 roster from that one are Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Madson and Brett Myers. I figured this would provoke some interesting … [Read more...]

What Could Mo Cheeks Have Done to Keep His Job?

Mo Cheeks

I pose this question because I just read an article from David Berri over at The Wages of Wins Journal as well as a few other similar view points on what really lead to Cheeks being fired... What Scott Skiles learned last season, and Cheeks has learned this year, when the shots stop falling you can lose your job. What's not clear is what a coach can do to restore shooting efficiency. After all, if coaches could change the rate at which shots find the net, we would see more consistency with … [Read more...]

Phils Re-Sign Moyer to 2-year deal. Is the off-season over?

Ruben Amaro just announced that the club has re-signed Jamie Moyer to a 2-year deal. The terms have not been disclosed, but I would guess it is around $14-$15 million in total.  I have said several times that I was hoping that Moyer would ride off into the sunset, and that if the Phillies did want him back, they should only offer him a one-year contract so I can't say I'm entirely pleased with this move.  It's nothing against Moyer personally, but I believe that he is much closer to the … [Read more...]
