The search is officially on. I will go out on a limb and say Ed Stefanski probably has a short-to-medium list of coaches he wants to talk to about the Sixers' open head coach position. And by the sound of it, he plans to take his time with this decision which is a good idea considering he rushed into a contract extension with Mo Cheeks when he really didn't have to. I want to do two things with this post: Throw out a bunch of names and any rumors I've heard regarding any of them. … [Read more...]
Sixers Trade Talk: Working With the Chicago Bulls

I will just get right to it... Elton Brand to Chicago for Tyrus Thomas and Kirk Hinrich Financially it works as evidenced by the trade machine's approval. So the next questions are: Would Chicago do it? Does this help the Sixers and in what ways? The Particulars Let me just get the particulars out of the way. Elton Brand - 4-years at ~$66, 037,650 left on his contract Tyrus Thomas - 1-year ~$4,743,598 left on his contract and then becomes a restricted free agent with a … [Read more...]
ReclinerGM 2009 NBA Mock Draft: Dannie vs. Pete, 1.0
OK - we are going to try something new here and do a combined mock draft, with each of us alternating and selecting players based on how WE would pick if we were GM's. This is not a prediction of how the draft WILL go, rather how the draft WOULD go if WE ran the teams. We will update this as we get to it, feel free to chime in as we move along (click-thru to see where we are)... 1. Los Angeles Clippers (Pete): Blake Griffin, PF, Oklahoma This is easy. Best player by a long shot. Eric … [Read more...]
Phils start tough week against Reds
Before we get into the series preview, I have a couple points of interest: Jim Thome tied Mike Schmidt on the all-time HR list last night with his 548th HR. If Thome did not use steroids or HGH (he has never been implicated), he is one of the players most hurt by the PED culture. As it stands, Thome is currently 13th on the all-time HR list. If you take out all the players accused of PED use, Thome jumps up to 8th behind only Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Ken Griffey Jr., Frank … [Read more...]
My Choice for the Sixers New Head Coach: Tom Thibodeau

Boston is out of the playoffs. As a Sixers fan that's good because we don't want a rival to succeed. More importantly it means Tom Thibodeau is 100% available right now to interview for the Sixers vacant head coaching position. And it looks like that will happen soon as Ed Stefanski has asked permission to interview Tom Thibodeau and Danny Ainge has granted him permission to do so. Let me start with a few thoughts about hiring an assistant rather than a more established (name and face) … [Read more...]
Phils take 4, make case to eliminate all home games
Maybe the Phils should just stay away from The Bank for the rest of the season. After beating the Nationals in 4 straight in Washington, we moved to 12-4 on the road (and 8-12 at home). Only 9 other teams are even above .500 on the road, let alone winning 3 out of 4. The Nationals might stink (I can't imagine having a blog devoted to them) but sweeping a 4-game series is impressive nonetheless, and was much needed after 2 disappointing performances at home. 2009: 20-16 2008: … [Read more...]
Don’t blame the fans! Phils fall in front of another sell-out
In this tough economy, a lot of teams are seeing declines in their attendance, but not the Phillies, who have filled their stadium to 99.1% capacity so far this year, and are on pace for 3.5 million tickets sales. So the fans are showing up at the Bank, but more often than not, the Phillies aren't. The Phillies are 8-12 at home so far this season, and are coming off a 2-4 homestand where the gave away a couple very winnable games. It should also be pointed out that the fans have not taken … [Read more...]
Bob Salmi Out as Sixers Color Guy

On my way into to work this morning I heard a report on 950 ESPN that "Bob Salmi is out" as the Sixers color commentator. Via email I was able to get Comcast SportsNet's official statement: "At the conclusion of the Sixers 2008-09 season, we evaluated all areas of the Sixers telecast. With this, Comcast SportsNet has decided not to renew the contract of broadcaster Bob Salmi. We thank Bob for his contributions to the network." - Maureen C. Quilter, Director of Communications, Comcast … [Read more...]
News (Bad?) Involving Eddie Jordan

Looks like Eddie Jordan is scheduled to interview with the Sixers this week (Friday) according to Kate Fagan and Philly.com. I guess that this was 100% expected right? Since his name is the first to come up might as well tackle my thoughts on him as the Sixers coach. What concerns me is this comment that makes too much sense: Another source close to Jordan said that between the two vacancies, Jordan would prefer the Sixers because of their immediate ability to contend. I read that as … [Read more...]
Sixers Coaching Candidates: Tony Dileo

The word is Ed Stefanski will be meeting with Tony Dileo this afternoon to discuss the season and more importantly Dileo's future - head coach or back to the front office. UPDATE: Dileo is out. Withdrew his name for the head coach position. Good job. I will come right out with my opinion of the situation - In no way should Tony Dileo remain as the Sixers head coach. I've read posts and articles about the pros and cons of retaining Dileo on the bench. We the only, only PRO (not a … [Read more...]
