Just want to bring this little Sixers draft history tidbit to you guys. An honest answer straight from the source - Larry Brown as to why they passed on Paul Pierce (and Dirk for that matter) and selected Larry Hughes. Ugh just painful. Why the hell would you do that? What is the benefit of promising a player anything? And the good guy that Larry Brown is didn't want to go back on his promise because "it was the right thing to do" for his own personal repuation not for the well … [Read more...]
ReclinerGM 2009 NBA Mock Draft: Dannie vs. Pete, 2.0
OK - here is our 2nd mock draft, with us switching places and Dannie taking the 1st overall pick, Pete 2nd, and so on. Lots of changes since we've had the measurements and the workouts to look over since our last mock. To reiterate: This is not a prediction of how the draft WILL go, rather how the draft WOULD go if WE ran the teams. 1. Los Angeles Clippers (Dannie): Blake Griffin, PF, Oklahoma Aside from being in LA this is the worst place for the best player in the draft to go. Not … [Read more...]
Digging Deeper: Breaking down the Phillies offense with unique (and simple) metrics

I needed a break from the regular series recaps, because there is only so much you can say every 3 games and still be moderately interesting. So, I pulled some interesting statistical numbers for the Phillies from ESPN, FanGraphs and Baseball Prospectus and actually found some real good stuff. Today I'm doing the hitters, and later in the week I will look at the pitchers. Since a lot of this stuff will be new to people, it is necessary to start off with a glossary: P/PA - Pitches per plate … [Read more...]
From 1915 to 1993, Phils continue World Series re-match tour with Blue Jays
Including the Boston series, the Phillies are in the midst of playing 4 of their 6 World Series foes consecutively. Their last series ended with them barely avoiding disaster by putting up a huge 7th inning to avoid another sweep at the hands of the Red Sox. Their next series pits them against the Blue Jays, who started the year as the hottest team in baseball, but have cooled considerably since. I'm working on 2 stat posts, one for hitters and one for pitchers, so I don't have enough time … [Read more...]
Phils demoralize Mets, Welcome Red Sox to Philly

That series was great on so many levels... Open up a 4 game lead on the Mets, who now have to face the Yankees in Yankee Stadium while rolling out Livan Hernandez and TBD-minor leaguer in the first 2 games. Not only beat them 2 out of 3, but won both games in extras, after coming back from several runs down. There is no way that team is in good spirits right now. After finding a new level of dislike for K-Rod following his over-the-top save celebration in Game 1, we found that despite … [Read more...]
We Landed A Legit Shooter: Reggie Evans Traded for Jason Kapono

Here is a portion of the official Sixers press release. PHILADELPHIA 76ERS ACQUIRE FORWARD JASON KAPONO FROM TORONTO Kapono is tied for the highest 3-point field goal percentage in NBA history. Philadelphia, Pa. - June 9, 2009 - Philadelphia 76ers President and General Manager Ed Stefanski announced today that the team has acquired forward Jason Kapono from the Toronto Raptors in exchange for forward Reggie Evans. The trade will be finalized pending both players passing their … [Read more...]
Phillies finish “bad” split in L.A. – Prepare for showdown in Queens
When you have a 4-game series on the road against the team with (by far) the best record in baseball, there is no reason you shouldn't be happy with a split... except when it could have been a sweep. Brad Lidge blew 2 saves, but the Phillies hitters and fielders certainly didn't help the cause, and the Phils left L.A. feeling like they had a really missed an opportunity to push the Mets and Braves further back. 2009: 33-22 2008: 31-24 2007: 27-28 Player of the Series: Cole Hamels (9 IP, … [Read more...]
Who needs a trade? Young arms help Phils dominate Pads

I hoped Brett Myers injury would be a signal to the Phillies that things aren't going to go as swimmingly as last season. It appears that it has, as the team has won 6 straight since the injury and have opened up a 3 1/2 game lead on the Mets (they lost this afternoon already, ha!). The day after the Myers injury, it seemed like we had no one we could count on in our rotation, but in the 6 starts since he's been out, that rotation has gone 6-0 with a 3.13 ERA and all of a sudden JA Happ and … [Read more...]
Blogger Conference Call with Eddie Jordan

Today Pete and I, as well as a few other fellow bloggers, had the opportunity to speak with new Sixers head coach Eddie Jordan in a special conference call. This was just like the one we did last season with Ed Stefanski. We had a good 30 minutes give or take to basically just fire off some questions. I was dead tired from two basketball games last night and feverishly writing down notes because I didn't have time or the equipment I needed to record the call like I did last time so … [Read more...]
Antonio Bastardo: What to expect?

Antonio Bastardo will make his MLB debut tomorrow against the Padres. Bastardo burst onto the scene as a hot prospect last year, only to get injured in Reading and fall off the radar. However, after a healthy return this year, he's torn up Reading and Lehigh Valley and is looking to do the same in Philly after he became the surprise replacement to Brett Myers. Because of his performance, as well as some scouting reports comparing him to Johan Santana, Bastardo is coming up with a good deal of … [Read more...]
