Phillies Win 4th Straight NL East Title!

Halladay

The Phillies are NL East champs, for the 4th straight year! This is truly something I never thought I'd see. But you could see by the on-field "celebration" after the win, this is becoming a little "old hat" for the Phils. The Phils are just the 5th team (2nd NL) since 1969 to win 4 straight division titles. Just for fun, I've listed the other 4 below, with their team leaders for the time period in which they won the titles. Some impressive company indeed. Atlanta Braves … [Read more...]

Phillies Clinch Playoff Spot, Homefield Next? Is That Good?

Despite a shaky series against the Mets, the Phillies clinched a playoff spot and the magic number in their division is 1, and for homefield throughout the playoffs is 2. Obviously the Phillies want homefield throughout the playoffs, but history tells us that might not dictate future success. Let's take a look at how the teams with the best records in the AL and NL have fared since 2000. Best Record in AL/NL since 2000 AL 2009- Yankees, 103-59 (won WS) 2008 - LA Angels, 100-62 (lost … [Read more...]

Vick Outstanding As Eagles Truck Jags

Well - that put an end to that controversy for at least another week. Michael Vick continued his swift and shocking assent with his 2nd straight outstanding game as starting QB. 17 for 31, 295 yards, 3 TD passing, 1 TD rushing, 0 turnovers. Right now he ranks 3rd in the NFL in passer rating behind Jay Cutler and Peyton Manning, and just ahead of Tom Brady. Oh, and he might be the fastest player in the entire league too. Here are my other quick hit thoughts of the game and the … [Read more...]

How Far We’ve Come

2001 yearbook

Part of me wants to feel bad for the Braves, their fans and Bobby Cox. They've fought hard all year, Bobby Cox is one of the best managers in history in his farewell season. They came in with a chance to make the NL East competitive, and just got flattened by our 1-2-3 starting pitching punch. I wanted to feel bad because we know this feeling. We know it well. Our dreams were crushed in excruciating fashion almost every year from 2001-2006. Wagner's blown saves against the Astros in 2005, … [Read more...]

Willie Green Traded
(Jason Smith Gone Too)

Willie Green Traded

The Sixers have finally traded Willie Green (and Jason Smith). Everyone (except JJG) rejoice. Willie and Jason were traded to the New Orleans Hornets for Craig Brackins and Darius Songalia. This was first reported by Adrian Wojnarowski on Twitter, followed by our slow ass Philadelphia media. You can essentially look at this deal as Rod Thorn moving two expendable players for a 1st round draft pick (Brackins). Here is Craig Brackins college profile. At 6'10, 230 Brackins is another … [Read more...]

Your New Starting Quarterback:
Michael Vick

Michael Vick Eagles Starter

Well - I didn't see that coming. Andy Reid named Michael Vick the starting QB for the Eagles...for the rest of the season. ESPN is reporting that the move is "permanent" and not related to Kolb's injury. Ignoring the complete idiocy of Reid first naming Kolb starter, and then switching to Vick, probably hurting Kolb's psyche more than it already is, I think this is the right move. Here's why... Simply put, Michael Vick could be a better long-term option at QB than Kolb. We can all … [Read more...]

Carmelo Anthony Sixers Trade Talk
(Is it Pointless?)

Carmelo Anthony Sixers Rumors

Last week Ken Berger of CBS Sports did some speculating based on those anonymous "sources" journalists seem to always have, that the Sixers could get involved in a three way trade with the Nets and Nuggets. The big bang of the hypothetical deal would result in: The Sixers getting: Derrick Favors The Nets getting: Carmelo Anthony The Nuggets getting: Andre Iguodala, Thaddeus Young The money line from that piece: Two people familiar with Denver’s strategy confirmed the Nuggets … [Read more...]

Surging Phillies Look To Bury Braves

BravesHitters

The Phils continued their ridiculously hot September (now 15-3), but sweeping the Nats out of a Philly in a series capped by a ridiculous 4-run 9th inning yesterday. The Phillies sit 3 games ahead of the Braves in the NL East, 5.5 ahead of a playoff berth, and have a magic number for the division of 10. I'm pretty sure our magic number for a playoff berth is 8. We need to go 6-6 in the last 12 to become just the 4th Phillies team to hit 95 wins. 8-4 would put us at 97 and tie the '93 team for … [Read more...]

Phillies Killers, And A Shout Out to PhillyPhaithful

chooch

I made a lot of great friends during my short tenure at the Phillies. Many of which were just as unhealthily obsessed with Philly sports as me. One of them, Dan Hershberg, has also taken his obsession to the web and opened up a Philly sports clothing store called PhillyPhaithful. You have probably seen several of his shirts already or heard them sponsoring events with radio stations. This isn't a shameless plug for my own personal gain, but rather I really think you guys and gals will like … [Read more...]

Vick vs. Hill, Your Eagles/Lions Game Thread

This was SUPPOSED to be a game featuring 2 up and coming QBs in Kevin Kolb and Matthew Stafford. Instead, it's a game featuring their back-ups, Michael Vick and Shaun Hill. Here's what I will be looking for in this game... Can Vick play at the level he played last week for an entire game? Can the secondary contain Calvin Johnson? How will the defense look with Gaither replacing Bradley? Can we get Desean Jackson involved? Can the special teams actually stop a kick-off … [Read more...]
