A crazy week ahead: A quick look at the Eagles roster

Or, at least I think this is the Eagles roster…

Aside from the draft, I haven’t really been thinking much about player moves for the Eagles, as I was so annoyed with the lock-out in the first place.

First – the timeline of events as just reported by Adam Schefter…

  • Teams can start trading this (Monday) afternoon. Trades won’t be official until Saturday.
  • Teams can start negotiating with their own free agents and rookies this afternoon. Contracts won’t be official until Saturday.
  • Teams can start negotiating with all free agents tomorrow. Contracts won’t be official until August 2nd.

Now that we seem to be back in business, let’s take a quick look at what the Eagles have right now.

My quick thoughts…

  • The italicized guys are free agents who have a chance of returning. It sounds like Quentin Mikell’s days in Philly are numbered. David Akers and Nick Cole are out as well. Les Bowen doesn’t think Dimitri Patterson has a chance of returning, but let’s wait until we sign/trade for a corner before we take him off.
  • Obviously corner is the biggest hole right now. Sounds like Dominique Rogers-Cromartie will be coming our way. If not, it might mean we will open our wallets for a big name corner.
  • Could use some safety depth.
  • The linebackers, as always, are a wild card. Is Jamar Cheney really as good as he looked? Can Casey Matthews start? Will we re-sign Bradley or Jordan?
  • Defensive line could use some help as well. I’m a little nervous about spending money on any DE’s out there. There isn’t a Julius Peppers available. Hopefully Jim Washburn can work his magic.
  • Looking at all of this…it actually looks like our defense might, well, not be very good. At least we our offensive line coach in charge of it.
  • The complete opposite of our defense, is our offense. Not seeing many holes there. At all. Maybe grab an extra receiver (though I think we might have Sinorice Moss for that spot) and maybe a back-up lineman. We will obviously need a back-up quarterback (Matt Hassellbeck?) and it will NOT be Brett Favre.
So that’s it – feel free to discuss anything and everything Eagles in the comments, and I will update this roster as we move through the week.
