Kevin Curtis is injured.
Anquan Boldin is requesting a trade.
The Eagles have an extra first-round pick in next year’s draft.
Andy Reid says they aren’t interested in a new WR.
What exactly am I missing here?
I’ve written here several times, most notably here and here, that the Eagles need to acquire a #1 receiver, give Donovan McNabb one last chance, and if it doesn’t work out, start from scratch. At the risk of being repetitive, the last time Donovan McNabb had a #1 receiver, he was the best QB in the NFL, and the Eagles went to the Super Bowl. Let’s give it one last shot (or two), before we trade him away, Westbrook gets too old, and we have to start over and wonder if we’ll be lucky enough to have players like them again.
Here’s your challenge: I think we all think that Eagles will not make this bold move (Andy Reid has said as much). You tell me, because I clearly don’t know, why the Eagles are not on the phone right now offering up that 1st Round pick for Anquan.

Personally I think Arizona wants more than that. I heard someone say give them Lito, Reggie Brown, and a pick. Arizona just signed a cb with their first round pick this year and signed rod hood so they aren’t looking for cb’s. I think Arizona thinks they have a real shot this year especially with the weak division they are in. They need Boldin to keep that shot.
I think what Reid says is “GM speak”. I’ll be the Eagles have put in a phone call to ‘Zona already and didn’t get a favorable response.
I truly hope Andy Reid is bluffing when he says he is not looking to add another reciever. If this team stands pat, that is simply unacceptable. I’ve always supported Reid and the management, but going into the season with Greg Lewis as a starter is absolutely pathetic. If they are too stubborn to get anything done, then they’ve lost my faith.
Word is that Curtis will be back by Week Five at the latest. (Which means he will miss the Dallas and Pittsburgh games). The problem is that he will be a shell of himself. LJ was a joke last year after he came back from surgery and we all remember Donovan’s sports hernia. Also remember, this is a smaller guy relying on speed and cutting ability. With Reggie Brown also hurt, that leaves DeSean Jackson as your most legit recieving threat. Jackson sure seems capable, but let’s be real- he’s a rookie.
Joe Horn’s got nothing left in the tank. He’s not the answer, no matter how much he wants to play for Donovan. The Cardinals are pretty set at CB so Lito may not be an adequate trading chip. At the end of the day, I still think the Cardinals would have a hard time turning down a 1st and conditioinal 3rd/4th rounder. Throw in Reggie Brown for all I care, too. Just get this done. Give Donovan one last fair shot.
A call for better (more dynamic) wide receivers is in order, but Reid’s passing game of about 40 throws pg involves a lot of rinky-dink, short stuff – the kind of pass receptions average receivers (and backs) can accomplish. One reason why he sticks to his discount rack shopping in that respect, methinks. After 9 years of experience, shouldn’t the celebrated Donovan McNabb elevate his stable of receivers, whomever is included in that bunch?
I agree with Dre. I think they had to atleast put a call into them to see what they can get, but why would AZ trade him? He is under contract and has been in practicing and like everyone else said they are pretty solid on CBs. I don’t think anything will happen because it is too close to the season. Boldin wouldn’t be able to learn our complicated west coast offense by Sept 7.
Place the call. Offer up two #1s, Brown and Darren Howard. Do what it takes to get the deal done….I still doubt very much that it would happen. The Cards would not want to face Bouldin this year. Trading him would probably have an adverse affect on their other highly paid WR.
Although it was very apparent that they needed a #1 WR before Curtis getting hurt, it is even more urgent that they get another WR before the season starts. I agree with JYurk, Curtis will only be a shell of himself. Prediction:
1) Joe Horn in an Eagles uniform.
2) “Unofficial” leaks that the Eagles offered a package of unnamed player(s) and a supposed #1 pick, but were still rebuffed by the Cardinals.
3) 8-8 and out of the playoffs.
Curtis will miss most of the year. It really takes 8-10 weeks to recover from sports hernia surgery. Rehab takes an additional 2-4. Even after rehab he still won’t be that effective this year. Count him as a loss for the year right now.
We won’t pick up Boldin. This is the perfect excuse for Andy when we go 8-8, or 7-9. “If Kevin hadn’t been injured we would have been right there in the mix.”
I really think the fans should run Lurie out of town for his “We’re going for it this year” speech if we don’t get Boldin. The Eagles are a business for him. I think he’s more concerned with Boston winning Championships than the Eagles!
@jef
would you really trade all that for a WR? Good thing your not the GM. AZ and other teams will know we are desperate now and we will not get a good deal, just how every team knew we were trying to dump Lito, and we got junk offers in return. Maybe I would trade one 1st rounder for him, but all that, your crazy.
Joe Horn played for a junk team last year, he may have something left. He has been a very good WR for a long time that knows the league. He could sign for cheep.
Either way, this is a very dissapointing way to start. Why would we have ever put any of our starters back out on that field last week after those conditions, it was preseason, put in a bunch of guys that are on the fence and see what they can do? Stupid, now we are paying for.
Maybe it’s a blessing in disguise. They have to get someone or at the very least it forces them to play Jackson. He has looked better then anyone else we have.
I think this is the perfect oppurtunity to give Usain Bolt a try out.
Built in excuse. “Well he had a few injuries. Curtis got hurt at the start of the season and we started the season slow as Jackson tried to adjust to the NFL…”
Can you hear it already?
LETS GO SIXERS!!!
Umm … jeff’s offer is a bit generous. But I would trade the Eagles #1 in a heartbeat (I owuld like to hold onto Carolina’s since they are likely to be worse than the Eagles.)
I would make the first round pick conditional. Like it couldn’t be the lower of the two picks no matter what the outcome of the season, to save us in such a situation from loosing the better pick. Or make it depending on percent of downs, yards and touchdowns, the better he plays the better the pick, or package of picks. But does anyone really think the eagles will make this trade?
I’d trade Litto, Reggie, and a #2, but as dissatisfied as he may be, Litto’s still an ace corner when healthy, and he’s still playing.
Trading that package and a number one would be steep. Still, can you imagine Bouldin as the #1, Basket/Avant as the 2, and Jackson exploiting the slot? It’d be a big big upgrade.
And Bouldin’s just the type to take those short passes and muscle something out of them.
Here’s hoping – GO BIRDS!
I agree wit JYurk, at least with the number of picks 2 give up…Lurie definitely put his foot in his mouth with the “going for it” remark, with that said they should go for whosever out there…..except 4 Joe Horn, no disrepect but the bird’s would be better off trading 4 TB’s Joey Galloway…make a push(a strong1) 4 Roy Williams or Boldin but offer a package of player’s. while it is pre-season players are still on display and teams are definitely watching. since having strong peformances so far i’d try n move McDougle since they already have signed clemons and are otherwise deep in the position he would make interesting in a detroit push 4 williams along with the picks mentioned also sheppard is more of a loss than a gain. getting rid of him would significantly deplete our db’s. other than shep we don’t have viable corners ikegwuono is on the shelf 4 the year and trying 2 convert demps now would be taking away from his progression as successor 2 Dawk, maybe J.R.Reed but he’s more of a compact hitter. Maybe the key is 2 jettison players who wont make it or are not expected 2 be traded(L.J?) Since they made the “genius” decision 2 convert hunt they should 2 combine Buckhalter and Moats…basically I ‘m saying if they continue to diminish the career of McNabb by giving him a receiver ONCE in his pro life they will bring the wrath of a city upon them…or at least an angry email!
Can someone show me some evidence of Andy Reid using injuries as an excuse for losing?
Another year & here we go again, #1 WR as a definite need! I agree with most of the posts, that we only have a window this year & next year? i.e. McNabb & Westbrook of being a strong candidate for the NFC Champoinship, so why not package our extra #1 draft pick w/Lito and/or Brown and finally get a #1 or solid #2 WR and finally have a “real” shot in the playoffs? Curtis with his injury and even Reggie Brown (for 4 weeks+) will not be truly effective till later in the year, but this might be too late to help the team. My prediction w/o a solid help at WR 8-8 or 9-7 (out of playoffs) but with a Boldin, Williams or #2 WR a definite 11-5 or better (playoffs or division title)!! It will open the other #3 & #4 receivers we have now, with Boldin or William as a real threat, like T.O. did when they was their legit #1 WR. HOW OBVIOUS DOES IT TAKE FOR THIS POMPOUS MANAGEMENT TO SEE THIS!?!?!? AT LEAST GIVE MCNABB A LEGIT #1 or SOLID #2 (JOEY GALLOWAY FOR E.G.) WR PLEASE!!!!!!!!!! I am going to the Rams game this Sunday, so we’ll see if the run defense can stop Jackson (should be an upgrade from last year the LB crew is more solid – love Mays he is a legit hitter (future star LB!!!). Another concern I have this year is the health of Dawkins, and of course Westbrook, let’s hope Lorenzo Booker & Hunt are actually used effectively!!
E-A-G-L-E-S…EAGLES!!
