Catching Up on the Sixers Non-News

by Dannie

I have been back and forth about what to write about.  There has been a complete lack of news surround the Sixers after they select Jrue Holiday in the draft.  And what’s been rumored or happening as of late has been quite boring and honestly not worth thought.  Just to catch up though…

Summer League Sucked!

The joint team idea was a busts and hopefully a learned lesson sacrificing on the basketball side by being cheap I mean fiscally responsible.  None of the players like or thrived in it and the head coach didn’t speak favorably of it either.

At the end of the week did we learn anything?  Yeah two things.

  1. Marreese Speights takes too many jumpers and needs to start focusing on being an inside player offensively, defensively and on the boards.
  2. Jrue Holiday can play some defense right now to help the Sixers but is a long way away from being special.

That’s all the brain power I have alloted for those ridiculous pick-up games I mean professional summer league basketball arrangement.

No One Wants Andre Miller – surprise, surprise

Really, does this surprise anyone?  Andre Miller is a good player.  He finds a way to get the job done but his game is a bit too limited.  He is a weak defender, poor perimeter shooter, aging and depreciating and clearly he and his agent have a false sense of worth and/or complete ignorance to the financial landscape of the NBA and team payrolls.

For me the progression with Andre Miller has been this…

  • Should we resign him? If so how much?
  • I think we should move on without him.
  • Can we get something of value for him in a sign and trade?
  • I really hope we don’t sign him for 3 years and anywhere near $30M
  • If they do sign him(which they shouldn’t) it should be no more than 2 years, $14M – $15M
  • Sign and trade with Portland for Blake and Outlaw?  Eh I guess I would take that.
  • Whew, good job Sixers only offering 1 year for roughly the MLE.  I have no problem keeping him on that deal as long as they find minutes for Jrue at the point and not force him to play off the ball.
  • Sign and trade with Portland – Debunked
  • Now what?  Does he just settle for this deal or try to find a market for his services that doesn’t exist?
  • The Knicks interested?  Sign and trade for Chris Duhon?  Eh it’s only one year, he did shoot 39% from three, 85% from the line and averaged 7.5 assist to 2.8 turnovers.  Where his numbers inflated in D’Antoni’s system?  I think I’d just rather them let the kid run the show and learn on the job.
  • Sign and trade with the Knicks – Debunked
  • I no longer care about or plan to talk about Andre Miller

What I Do Care About Regarding the Sixers at this Point…

How will they fill out the remaining roster spots.  Once they sign Holiday they will have 10 guys and need probably 3 more.  Assuming Miller is gone we need a cheap veteran point guard, a shooting guard and a veteran big, preferably a center.  Who’s out there on the cheap?

  • Von Wafer – SG
  • Dionte Christmas – SG
  • Brevin Knight – PG
  • Anthony Carter – PG
  • Flip Murray – Combo Guard
  • Rodney Carney – G/F
  • Drew Gooden – PF
  • Chris Wilcox – PF
  • Stromile Swift – PF
  • Joe Smith – PF
  • Shelden Williams – PF/C
  • Radoslav Nesterovic – C
  • Jason Collins – C
  • Patrick O’Bryant – C
  • Chris Mihm – C
  • Saer Sene – C
  • Jarron Collins – C
  • Didier Ilunga-Mbenga – C
  • Calvin Booth – C
  • Melvin Ely – C
  • Ryan Hollins  – C
  • Lorenzen Wright – C
  • Adonal Foyle – C
  • Jamaal Magloire – C
  • Jake Voskuhl – C

Among others and undrafted rookies.

Coaching Staff Final?

As I expected Eddie Jordan brought on Randy Ayers to round out his coaching staff.  It looks like:

  • Mike O’Koren – Lead Assistant
  • Randy Ayers – Defensive Assistant
  • Aaron McKie – Carryover/Player development
  • Jim Lynam – Carryover

My question is where is the on-staff shooting coach?  At this point Jordan has brought over O’Koren and Ayers from his staff with the Wizards.  Why not add Dave Hopla as well who won’t be kept on under Flip Saunders?  Are the Sixers being cheap and skimping on the basketball side of things again?

That’s about it for the non-Sixers news so far this summer.  If anything legit happens I’ll be sure to get on it.  Until then I have an idea for a post looking at this upcoming season.

Meeks was drafted by the Bucks.

Of that list, I only like Christmas, Wafer, Gooden, Wilcox and Carney

I get emails daily looking for me to renew season tickets. I cannot pull the trigger because I picture myself sitting there this coming year with 5000 or 6000 other people watching the games (and most of them will have purchased “two for one”  or  “all you can eat”  promotion tickets).

3 Ryan F 07.13.09 at 8:01 pm

I like Murray, the guy can flat out score the ball.  Wafer and Xmas as well.

4 Kenny 07.13.09 at 10:05 pm

i dont see how Wilcox and Gooden would be on the Sixers radar (if you just meant who do i like on that list obviously i like them).. but i would like christmas if i could see him in some summer league action and wafer is nice too definatly would like to give carney another shot.. flip murray is old and dont know about his legs.. this is a running team.. they need to stay fast or it will be just like last year a big mess out there (no system) and just missing out on a lottery pick.. they should be looking at a center but i guess there in love with jason

Well if the Sixers are too cheap and too dumb to go get Nate Robinson at least my Greek team has balls the pull the trigger.
Yeah yeah yeah not a true pg, whatever that dude puts up 33 and 15 in days that duhon couldn’t play because he was too hung over.
Free agency came and there hasn’t been a whisper of us signing anyone, parker signed for what 2 years and peanuts.

What about us?  We like Carney for min wage and that’s it.  This is a low class organization man.   Can’t even have a summer league team huh?

He puts up 33 and 15 on a bottom feeding team, that is all about gunning and no defense in losing efforts.  We have Lou Williams to do that already on our semi-decent playoff team, why do we need another one?  If that’s the case why not just bring back AI.  They all play the same way which typically doesn’t lead to any more wins.

No case can be made that makes any sense for the Sixers perusing Nate Robinson.

How do you know the Sixers didn’t try to get Anthony Parker and he turned them down to play with LeBron on a clear contender?

Apparently there is very little if any chance Miller is back according to Stefanski:

“We’re now in a sign-and-trade mode,” said Stefanski of Miller – Philly.com

And they are looking for a veteran pg, swingman and two bigs.  Pretty much what I said above.

See what comes of this in the coming month.

7 The Real Rob 07.14.09 at 12:29 pm

I hope we do get a veteran PG, especially one with a solid jump shot from any distance.  That’s all I hope for, but Stefanski and the Sixers are taking the right approach.  Maybe then Miller will have no choice but to accept whatever the Sixers have to offer.  Lou is still raw with the PG skills and Jrue is more of a project.

Anyway, we have to hope for the best!

8 Coach Jones 07.14.09 at 1:39 pm

Need a shooting coach in Philly?  I know where there’s one that can even teach Shaq to sink free throws.

9 Morty 07.14.09 at 3:38 pm

Real Rob: I actually hope they do not get a veteran PG that will, undoubtedly, play too many minutes. I prefer the Lou/ Holiday combo, strange as that may sound. A “grizzled vet”, and I include Miller in that category, will only cost the team a few draft slots. Let Lou and Holiday either blossom, or drag the team down.

10 2one5 07.14.09 at 11:19 pm

Wilcox, Wafer and Christmas are the only ones I want off that list. I agree with Morty Let Lou and Jrue run the backcourt and see what happens this year. This year should be all about growth.

11 The Greek 07.15.09 at 9:02 am

The difference between Nate and Lou is that Nate dog is superior in every facet of the game.  I know its a pipe dream, no need to really argue about it.    Nate just happens to be my fav non sixer player so I would love to have him.  I know his d is suspect and he has a personality of a young mike tysone but we need a lot of help.  My next post will be from Greece, maybe I will see Nate at the airport.

12 Dannie 07.15.09 at 9:42 am

Really?  Superior in every facet of the game?  Eh I don’t think so.  Production per 36 is very similar.

I am glad you finally came out and expressed your true motivations with all this Nate Robinson stuff (simply having a player you like on the team).  For a minute I actually thought it was based on the logic that he actually would helped the Sixers win more games (which I highly doubt he would).  So you are right no need to debate the point further.

13 The Greek 07.15.09 at 9:58 am

Dannie thats from 2006.      Anyone in here would take Nate over Lou.   Your right I do like the player, he brings excitement to the court.  And there isn’t anything wrong with adding him to a team for 2 years that has no title aspirations.  These next 2 years are once again all about developing the talent that we do have while waiting to shed the deadweight salaries of Willie G and Sammy the Terrible.

Doesn’t matter anyway, the Sixers don’t even have the money to add me.

14 Dannie 07.15.09 at 10:41 am

Greek – No, it’s their entire careers to date, not just 2006, 2006-2009.  Both have played 4 seasons.

The Sixers DO have the money to add him. Robinson is at best a full mid-level exception player (I’d argue that is probably a bit too much, anything more lands him on the overpaid players list) which the Sixers do still have at their disposal if they choose to use it.

Besides that I don’t agree at all with “there’s isn’t anything wrong with adding him to a team for 2 years that has no title aspirations.”

There is plenty wrong with that.

  • For one you’re adding another undersized volume shooter to the backcourt.  Redundant player. There is something wrong with that in of itself.
  • On top of that you effectively take minutes away from the point guard of the future (the “developing talent”) Jrue Holiday by adding another player player at the position who will command minutes both verbally and with his salary.
  • So now you have added a player that will take minutes away from Holiday AND who shoots too much in a pretty inefficient manner.  Guys like that don’t support the growth or development of young players.
  • Excitement doesn’t necessarily translate to wins.  And at the end of the day winning is significantly more exciting than losing with a guy who is perceived to be doing so in an exciting and flamboyant fashion.
  • I think people tend to undervalue winning and experiencing playoff basketball.  I think an argument can be made that having existing young players you are building around play in highly competitive and pressure-fill playoff games could very well have more value than high bust rate draft picks.  If you aren’t drafting in the top 5 (maybe top 10 depending on class) forget about it.  And this Sixers team isn’t bad enough to reach the top 5 even if they tried so why not try to win as many games as they can?

I could go on but I am sure that is enough.

15 The Real Rob 07.15.09 at 4:06 pm

What do you guys think about Raymond Felton?
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4329989

16 Dannie 07.15.09 at 4:20 pm

Rob – Why?

17 The Real Rob 07.15.09 at 5:39 pm

Felton is someone to consider at age 25. He is a quick, strong guard who could flourish in an Eddie Jordan type of system.  Plus, Felton could relieve Iggy from some of the playmaking and some of the scoring.  He comes from a great system in North Carolina.  The only thing about him might be a shaky jumpshot that might make you cringe a bit Dannie.

I’m just saying that it wouldn’t hurt for the Sixers to look at Felton.

18 Dannie 07.15.09 at 5:49 pm

I know plenty about Felton, watched him play a lot.  But it doesn’t make sense.  For one he is a restricted free agent the Sixers have no buying power.  They can only use some portion of the MLE and the Bobcats would love to match a small offer in that range.  If they were looking that way they would be much better served looking at Sessions.

Two, he wants a long-term deal.  Why would the Sixers commit to him when they are preparing to give Lou a shot at point and drafted Holiday at the position?

Three he can’t shoot, if we wanted a point who can’t shot we might as well just bring back a true veteran in Miller.

The Sixers don’t need a point guard at this point.  The most important thing the Sixers need is to figure out what they already have on this roster under Eddie Jordan.  The Sixers just need to play some games with a team that is healthy.

19 Ryan F 07.15.09 at 8:24 pm

I don’t think we need to add another PG for the MLE, if so bring back Miller.  Use the money on another shooter/SG or keep it.  Last thing this team needs is another mediocre 5 million dollar PG.  Bring in a good PG thru trade or ride the season out with the young guys and see what you have.

I’ve been secretly on the Kevin Ollie bandwagon by myself for a couple days.  He is CHEAP, can knock down an open 15 fter, great influence, and won’t bitch if he’s riding pine.

Please no Nate Robinson wishes, he’s like Jamal Crawford but shorter and worse.

20 Ryan F 07.15.09 at 8:28 pm

Juan Dixon as well, knows EJ’s sytem and is a career bench guy who wont demand much money or PT, then try to land a SG…Wafer maybe?

21 sfw 07.17.09 at 7:22 am

preferences:

PG – A Carter(solid/strong vet )
SG- wafer then Carney then christmas
C – Ryan Hollins as an extra big(could provide 10-20 minutes a night) and fill in for Sammy if he somehow could be dealt)

22 Dave T 07.17.09 at 5:35 pm

Pacers & A-Miller – Hoopsworld and RealGM reporting that if the Pacers don’t match the Raptors 4 year, $20 million dollar offer sheet to JJack, the Pacers might be interested in offering A-Miller an offering sheet of 1 year for the mid-level, or a sign and trade.

If Jeff Foster’s contract was a few million dollars less, he’s a guy I’d LOVE to have on our team…but other then that, really no one on the Pacers that should interest us.  No way they let Brandon Rush go, who would be a perfect addition to our team.  Sign and trade really doesn’t seem to make sense for either team.

Earl Watson – The Thunder just waived him.  For me, I’d immediately add Watson to the short list of Brevin Knight and Anthony Carter for vets I’d love to see in a Sixers uniform.  Watson, like both S Blake and A Carter, has logged very efficient minutes as a starting PG as well as a backup.  He’s an unselfish, pass first guy that knows how to get in the lane and score as well.  Has a nice pull up jumper from 15 feet, and his 3 point shot, while inconsistant year to year, is certainly above average and he’s proved he can hit it if left open.

23 Ryan F 07.18.09 at 9:48 am

Earl Watson agrees to sign with Pacers, so that  kills both options of signing him or a S&T w/ Indy

24 The Real Rob 07.18.09 at 9:51 pm

The Brilliant Charles Barkley on the Sixers and how he would handle Samuel Dalembert!

25 TT32 07.19.09 at 7:53 am

Ok so Earl Watson is off the board, Anthony Parker, Chris Wilcox. I understand what you guys are saying about not using the MLE, but as Charles said we are not contenders, but we still need to fill out the roster, so what is Ed waiting for to do something because they are not keeping Miller. So why the wait? Do something and do the sign and trade later.
