Brotherly Link Love: 5-11-2008

Haven’t posted in a few days, been busy working on some other online stuff, but I have read a bunch of 76ers-related articles lately that I thought I’d share to stir up some good Sixers talk.

Let’s kick this off with our friend over at Sixers 4 Guidos (love the new banner by the way, Ricky!). Ricky is doing a Sixer-by-Sixer 07/08 breakdown just as we are here on the Recliner. He has started with, in both our opinions, the team MVP, Andre Miller. Make sure you head over and check out a fellow Sixers blogger.

Hoopsworld wrote a very positive season In review of the Philadelphia 76ers. They give their team MVP, coaching analysis, top 5 highlights, lowlights, long-term prognosis, draft needs and free agent needs. For a season review it is pretty light and doesn’t have the emotion as you would get from a die hard 76ers fan writing the review, but still a good read.

Bob Ford wrote an “interesting” article discussing how this summer is the most important off-season in a decade for the 76ers. And although Ford has some nice points wrapped in sarcasm and wit, the best read of this article are the quotes for GM Ed Stefanski. Most notably:

Stefanski gently suggested that Iguodala is not a No. 1 option now and may never be. “Will he get there? I don’t know,” Stefanski said.

That quote is a very important one to keep in mind when talking about potential deals this off-season. Although Stefanski has also said “we have no intention of not matching any offer from another team,” regarding Louis Williams and Andre Iguodala, other comments also suggest he isn’t opposed to letting either of them go as well.

The Asbury Park Press has pretty much more of the same regarding the 76ers off-season moves. But here are two more Stefanski quotes that really stuck out to me.

“I think Andre Iguodala is a good fit for our team,” Stefanski said. “Is he the (No.) ‘1′ man on our team? He has to prove that, but I’ll take a lot of Andre Iguodalas on our team.”

Stefanski said the 76ers likely won’t go over the NBA’s luxury tax threshold, but the organization would pay the dollar-for-dollar penalty if they could find “a star who can turn us totally around.”

I think it’s pretty clear Stefanski agree with us fans that Iggy isn’t the go-to guy for the 76ers. More importantly it looks like we have a smart “do whatever it takes” GM that is fully backed by the Sixers organization and non-basketball-minded owner.

Everyone is very high on Thaddeus Young, Pete and I being two of his biggest promoters. The question remains what position will he play. I think we all agree he is a natural small forward. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that is where he will play next year depending on who Stefanski brings in here. How bout we just see what Young has to say about what position he wants and thinks he should play. His quotes are EXACTLY what I want to hear from him going into his first off-season.

Should The Sixers Match Any Offer To Re-Sign Andre Iguodala This Off-season? That is the argument CJ Mittica & Drew Silverman of The Bulletin are debating. Regardless of your own person preference on the question who do you think gave the most convincing argument?

Last but not least is an article from a regular reader of the blog Sixerzguy. It is always good to see what other teams are thinking and planning so here is a solid interview with the Houston Rockets GM Daryl Morey.

Enjoy.

Brotherly Link Love: 4-30-2008

I figured I just do a Brotherly Link Love post today since it has been pretty depressing reading the Philly boards and comments coming off the whoopin’ Detroit laid on the Sixers last night. And I really don’t want to waste my time typing up game 6 adjustments since it’s pretty clear Mo Cheeks doesn’t make any. So here is a blend of 76ers and other posts of interest for you to check out.

  • The Mavs fired coach Avery Johnson today. This was a no-brainer for me. I have never thought of him as an elite coach, yet he was in charge of a high payroll team with championship potential. When it comes down to it, 0-9 in playoff road games since their 2-0 lead in the finals against Miami. That is enough to get the axe in my book.
  • Top 25 NBA Basketball Blogs: May 2008. Our friend over at le basketbawl does a great job of breaking down NBA blogs by their Google, Alexa, Technorati and Ballhype rankings.
  • Who is your NBA MVP this season? If you are still on the fence between the two front runners Kobe Bryant and Chris Paul, check out the write-up I did on our basketball blog Hoops State of Mind. That should set you straight.
  • Rasheed Wallace has a loose booty hole. Nuff said.
  • If you actually want to read a decent game 5 recap that wasn’t as piss poor as my uninspired post from last night head over to Sixers 4 Guidos and Passion and Pride for a Philly angle. Or if you’re into reading what the enemy (just for this series) is talking about, hit up Need4Sheed for 35 little Rasheed Wallace heads worth of game recap. Natalie has some good quotes from post-game including a close up of Sammy’s head and explanation why decided to go Mr. T on us.

Enjoy.

The First Edition of ‘Brotherly Link Love’

Brotherly Link Love will be a regular post dedicated solely to recognizing other great bloggers and content primarily about the 76ers.  I will surely toss in some main stream and non-Sixers articles I think you guys will like as well.  But the main point is to promote other bloggers who are doing a good job writing about sports.  Oh, and unlike other “link posts” I won’t just give links without context or my own thoughts.  So here we go…

The first ever review of The Recliner GM Sports Blog.  Kellex over at The Sports Dollar did a fantastic review of our new blog.  I honestly couldn’t have said it any better myself.  The Sports Dollar also has some great tips for the sports blogger looking to monetize their blog, check him out.

The Depressed Fan points out some very good bulletin board material for the 76ers going into the Detroit playoff series. All of the ESPN writers are picking our Sixers to go down in 5 or 6 games and the question is: lack of respect or reality?  I think the writers are doing what they are suppose to do: picking the favorite vs. a team with no dominant go-to player who can sway the series in favor of the underdog. When you consider how the games slow down and are more half-court dominant in the playoffs, the 76ers will have to play near flawless basketball to win 4 out of 7 if they can’t get out on the break as much. Impossible?  Of course not, but I don’t think anyone would bet money on it either.  Right?

Tom Dillard over on the Bleacher Report gives 5 Reasons Why the Philadelphia 76ers Are in the Playoffs.  I think Tom goes a bit overboard killing Korver, but I think his point is there.  When Korver left the Sixers team defense did get better.  I think he is off in his assertion that Billy King “cannot draft to save his life.”  I have said in previous posts and comments on the blog that the one think King could do was draft.  He brought in Iggy, Lou and Thaddeus, three guys who look to be the core of this franchise for quite a while.  You can add Rodney Carney to that list as well if he continues to improve his 3-point shot and individual defense.  Dillard is right on in respects to Mo’s extenstion and a little hyped up in comparing Andre Miller to the likes of Steve Nash and Jason Kidd, but you gotta love the enthusiasm.

Apparently some talking TV head created an interesting, four-in-one Phillies/Flyers/Eagles/Sixers jersey. I don’t know anything about this guy Stephen Colbert so check out EnriqueFed’s video on ALL THINGS PHILLY SPORTS for more details.  I am actually kind of bothered by the fact that he promotes Philly then goes on to wipe his noise with the jersey.  Come on dude, wait til commercial for that.

Last, but certainly not least, is a vivid picture of some ugly 76ers history.  Think back to November 9th 1984.  Philadelphia 76ers vs. the hated Boston Celtics and the brawl that will never be forgotten.  NESW Sports has many other great vids you may not have seen before.  Definitely a blog I will be keeping an eye on going forward.

Enjoy.
