Nova Lands 2nd Recruit of 2011 Class:
PG Tyrone Johnson

Nova Recruits

Jay Wright secured his 2nd commitment of the 2011 recruiting class with the verbal pledge of Tyrone Johnson, PG out of Plainfield, NJ. Johnson is a 4-star recruit, ranking as the 50th best player in the country on Rivals, 67th on Scout and 57th on ESPN. Nova beat out Georgetown for his services. The scouting report on Johnson is as follows. He's a big PG (6'3'') who does everything well, but isn't elite in any facet. He can defend, drive, shoot the mid-range jumper and pass well. His … [Read more...]

Taylor King To Leave Villanova

Taylor King is having a tough time sticking around any college basketball program. Villanova announced that King would leave the program due to "personal reasons." Scuttlebutt around the internet suggests this isn't really the case. Stories abound that King was a hard partier who didn't take basketball seriously and may or may not have failed a drug test or two. There is also a story going around that he got in Jay's doghouse by prank calling him (read: drunk dialing) in the middle of the … [Read more...]

Villanova Runs Out of Luck

The refs didn't bail them out.  Their opponent didn't bail them out.  And the Wildcats played another piss poor game in this NCAA tournament.  The difference: they lost this one.  Sadly it shouldn't take luck for Nova to beat the teams they faced in the first two rounds. I honestly don't even know where to start. Everyone saw this coming.  They sucked down the stretch of the regular season.  They sucked in the first game of the tournament, with two starters having to be disciplined … [Read more...]

Nova Gets Undeserved Win Over Robert Morris

This isn't going to be long, because that game (and watching my alma mater Notre Dame lose) took a lot out of me. Let's get one thing straight: Robert Morris deserved to win that game, and Nova deserved to lose. They wanted it more, they were more prepared, they played with passion. Meanwhile, Nova had 2 starters benched for not bothering with the scouting report and then had those 2 starters go out there and put up a 4-19 from the field. They played like they were on ice skates and their … [Read more...]

Nova Hooked Up, Temple Not So Much
As Brackets Released

There has never been a March Madness tournament (in it's current form, since 1975) without a team representing Philadelphia. This year, the streak continues as both Villanova and Temple were in the field when the brackets were announced. I thought that both teams should have been 3-seeds (as did many of the bracketologists), but the committee put Nova at a 2-seed despite losing 5 of their last 7, and put Temple at a 5-seed, despite winning their conference tournament and ranking 9th in the … [Read more...]

Is It Time To Temper Expectations For Villanova?

Coming into this season we knew this Villanova team had a lot of flaws. But until this recent stretch of Big East games, they had been covered up by late game comebacks or heroic plays by Scottie Reynolds. But now, after yesterday's loss to Pitt, Nova finds themselves 2-3 in their last 5, and wondering just how far they can really go in the NCAA tournament. Here are my amateur observations as to why the team is struggling... Interior play - Antonio Pena's numbers might show he had 9 … [Read more...]

Nova Looks Sloppy In Loss To UConn

Only a day after being handed the Big East lead following a Syracuse upset, Villanova gave it right back in a very sloppy, poorly played contest against UConn that looked frighteningly like their loss to Georgetown last week. When this Nova team is playing bad, they are tough to watch. They try to play too fast and often look like they are on ice-skates, losing the ball, throwing it away and forcing shots. This particularly iteration had a couple stand-outs: Taylor King - I don't … [Read more...]

Nova Answers Call, Beats #4 WVU

It wasn't a huge deal when Villanova lost to Georgetown on Saturday. Nova wasn't going to go undefeated in the Big East and losing to the #8 team, on the road, in the midst of giant blizzard that resulted in travel problems is completely understandable. However, that loss did make tonight's game against West Virginia more important. These were the first 2 really tough Big East games for Nova, and if they lost both they could go from Final Four contender to part-of-the-pack in the Big East … [Read more...]

20 Games In: How Nova’s Players Rank

scottienova

Villanova is off to the best start in team history (19-1) - in large part because of their tremendous depth. The Cats have gone 11-deep at times, and are dominating the 2nd half of games, as they demonstrated against St. Johns and Notre Dame last week, because they are usually more fresh than the other team. With so many players on the court and 6 of them new from last year it has been interesting to see how they are playing compared to what I was expecting when the season started. I … [Read more...]

Brilliant Reynolds Leads Sloppy
Nova To Ugly Win

8ab9b5_scottie_01122010

44 turnovers. 66 fouls. 94 FT's. 2 hours and 40 minutes, w/o OT. Possibly the ugliest, sloppiest game I've ever seen. Yet somehow, through all of that mess, Scottie Reynolds pulled Nova out of a 17-point hole to beat a very tough Louisville team on the road, 92-84. It was arguably the best game of Scottie's career. He scored 36 points on only ten shots. He was 9-10 from the field and 5-5 from 3. He also has a couple key steals and every single one of his 9 makes were important. He has been … [Read more...]
