Celek Signs 6-Year Extension

by Pete

Following in Winston Justice’s footsteps, Brent Celek inked a 6-year extension with the Birds today, keeping him with the team through 2016. Terms have not yet been disclosed, but you can bet that it is one of those cap-friendly deals that the Birds love to sign their young guys to and the young guys love to sign and later complain about.

Celek, 24, has been one of breakout stars on the Eagles this year and has a very good chance of making the Pro Bowl.

Some Celek stats:

  • Ranks 8th among TE’s in catches, 5th in yards and T-4th in TDs
  • Is on pace for 1,097 yards and 7 TDs this season (if he isn’t out with his hand injury, that is). The yards would have been 2nd all-time for an Eagles TE and the TD’s 3rd all-time (both behind Pete Retzlaff from the 60’s).
  • Only 5 TE’s in NFL History have had 1,000+ receiving yards at Age 24 or younger. They are Mike Ditka, Kellen Winslow, Tony Gonzalez, Kellen Winslow Jr. and Mark Bavaro.

Very excited to have Celek locked in. Let’s hope DeSean is next.

I don’t think they can extend DeSean until he has 2 full years of service right?

You are correct Stu. So if an extension comes for DJack as I would imagine it will, I would expect it sometime next year. The Eagles always seem to sign young guys to similar deals around the same time of the year.
I am just surprised that guys still sign these contracts given the team’s history with guys complaining a few years into the contract that its unfair. At least Sheldon has gone about his business and had a pro bowl caliber year.

The players are in a bad situation.  If they don’t sign an extension they can end up losing out if they get hurt.  NFL players are a weaker position than the other major sports… and their risk of career ending injury is higher.

Although I’d love to be in that type of  ”bad situation” :) where I have to leave potential future millions on the table in exchange for a few million up front.

Rosenhouse is DeSean’s agent. he’s going to want the big bucks for any kind of extension given his history with the birds

If Celek really did tear his ligaments I don’t see how he plays rest of the year, but super glad we signed him up.
