You want to go to Andy Reid’s school of clock management? See Donovan McNabb’s feet throwing extravaganza? Marvel at mind numbingly stupid play calling and execution on 3rd and 1? You got it!
The Eagles lost to the Cowboys tonight, a game in which I believe they were the better team, in a fashion that we have seen so many times before. McNabb inconsistent, Reid stubborn and stupid, and the fans left wondering how a team can look so good one week, and so bad the next. Thanks for helping us forget about the Phillies loss.
Let’s get to the venting…
- I honestly want to speak to Andy Reid and ask him how he can watch us not convert on short distance over and over again and not hand the ball off to Leonard Weaver every…single…time. He did it once tonight, and it worked. Every single other time it didn’t. How that does not compute in his head might drive me insane one of these days.
- McNabb was inconsistent, but he didn’t lose this game. We lost this game primarily because the Cowboys scored 3 times on a short field. Once on a pass Maclin tried to catch with his facemask, once on a poor pass by McNabb that was picked, and once on a 4th and 1 replay that should cost someone his job. The Cowboys did very, very little to win this game.
- On that last point – explain to me how that ball wasn’t re-spotted. It was clear and indisputable that McNabb was down about 6 inches ahead of where the ball was originally spotted. There was a clear point on the logo where the tip of the ball landed, and that’s not even including the couple inches of forward progress he had before that. That non-call was so dumbfounding, you want to look around and see if camera’s are taping your reaction for some sick reality show.
- The official the entire night was point the wrong direction and getting calls and teams wrong. Was the dude hammered or something? Is that why he couldn’t see the spot?
- Dear Sheldon Brown – when it is 3rd and 14 and you have safety help underneath and none behind you, you don’t jump a route.
- How about the play that set up the Cowboys FG before the half. Nothing quite adds to frustration like your own players tackling each other.
Other observations…
- Jason Peters did a tremendous job on DeMarcus Ware.
- The look on Andy Reid’s face as he realized that whatever math he did to decide to kick a field goal instead of going for it on 4th and 11 was wrong, was comical.
- We better have a new punter next year. 75% of Sav Rocca’s punts are terrible.
- I think it is very unlikely we will see Westbrook past this season.
- I thought Brent Celek’s Captain Morgan “celebration” was funny – and don’t know what Jason Avant was doing anywhere near him.
- Aside from one play, Trent Cole was virtually non-existent.
- We need Chris Gocong back, and we need Akeem Jordan to not be hurt.
- We are on pace for a 10-6 record, but our 2nd half is much harder than the first. We play, in order, SD, CHI, WAS, ATL, NYG, SF, DEN and DAL. The way our consistency has been, we are really going to have to play better to do any better than 5-3 there.
- Why did we sign Mike Vick?

The spot on that play was terrible to begin with, and then the fact that they didn’t overturn it on the clear replay makes it one of the worst calls I have ever seen. Maybe the ref meant to overturn it but got the teams mixed up again.
I constantly go back and forth on McNabb and Reid. On one hand they have guided the franchise to be consistently good and competitive, but then there are times like tonight where it feels tired and I feel like change would be refreshing.
- The two “and 1 yard to go plays” were both results of a receiver catching a ball beyond the sticks then falling backwards to lose the first down (McCoy, then Jackson). We’ve been successful with Vick or Weaver to pick that up, why are not running either guy, Pete I agree with you there.
- Moise Fokou tackling a guy away from a play that cost a TD return (we did later score a TD on that play), but on Sheldon’s momentum shifting INT, Fokou went low and cost 50 yards of field position that we never capitalized on and we were leading 13-10 at the time. Could have put the game away.
- I have never seen the WR screen work in the NFL until last night when Dallas kept hitting that scrub WR for key first downs
- Akers actually hit 2 45+ FGs and 1 50+ yarder. I don’t think he’s done that in about 6 years.
- I liked Collinsworth’s comment that the defense was “milling” around on a few plays. All of the new guys in there, especially at LB, was tough to get in synch. It is sad when Witherspoon is the most senior Eagle LB and this is just his third game, that was the case when Jordan got hurt.
- Also, a starting LB gets hurt on SPECIAL TEAMS?? We are thin enough at LB, why is Jordan on kickoff coverage?? Just resign Jason Short and call it a day. I’d rather see Vick covering kicks than our starting LB who we can’t afford to lose.
It’sd time for these 2 washed up losers to hit the road (Reid and McNabb). They have now become my all time most hated Eagles. AR has never been any good with a clock, and McNabb couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn. They suck, period.
ALan-
I’m not on that boat yet. Certainly not for Reid.
Captain Morgan? Is that what Celek was doing? I had no idea.
If the Cowboys would have gone 3 and out and we get the ball back with 2 min, is there a chance in hell McNabb and Reid put together a 2 min game winning drive?
the obvious answer to your question John is no…they’ve never done it with 3 timeouts and there was no way they were doing it with none considering we for whatever reason usually insist on huddling up during 2-minute drills….
I love being in the playoffs year in and year out, very few teams enjoy that kind of success. But at the same time Andy is who he is, and he isn’t ever going to change. So we are forever stuck without a running game, passing on 3rd and 1, poor clock management, and too much passing in general, forgetting to sign a position player every year. Punter one year, fullback another year, etc… And ever getting a straight answer at a press conference.
These things are permanent, ownership is at fault. They know Andy isn’t going to change, it’s up to Lurie to either force the changes or get a new coach.
when is the last time McNabb did what Rivers did yeasterday? Honestly, when? Has it happened in the past 5 years? I mean the last 2 minutes and leave the other team next to nothing to come back. It is so rare when the eagles are down 10 points at any time of the game that they ever come back to win. Seems like if the Eagles aren’t up at half-time, they will lose. It is so weird to me that the Eagles offense is relatively quick-strike but really has a tough time coming from behind.
