Eagles Rumors: 2009 Mock Draft Round-Up

It’s not quite NFL Draft time, but there is not shortage of mock drafts. Below, I’ve compiled a list of some of the better sources for Mock Draft and who they have the Eagles picking with their first 3 picks. I will update this every month or so, and will be covering Eagles draft and off-season rumors more regularly this off-season. If there are any sites that you think are particularly good for their mock-drafting, let me know, and I’ll add them to the list.

Looks like the consensus right now is that we will go for a RB and OT. Of the 22 projected picks, 7 are RB and 7 are OTs. Chris Wells is our first pick in 3 of drafts, and I would love to get him at that point. He was projected as a top-5 pick for much of the year, but has dropped recently. OT Eben Britton was the most popular pick for us, showing up in 5 of the 9 mocks. I don’t know enough about him to really have an opinion. Wasn’t paying too much attention to the OT situation at Arizona this year.

Right now, these mocks are based on team needs and available players, not actual rumors. Eagles’ drafts are almost impossible to predict for 3 reasons:

  1. They rarely draft out of need for that particular year. They are usually looking several years ahead. Best example being the Lito, Sheldon and Michael Lewis draft when they already had pro-bowlers Troy Vincent and Bobby Taylor. Kevin Kolb is another great example.
  2. They (and most NFL teams) hardly ever let information about who they are targeting leak. Unlike any other draft, the NFL Draft is a huge chess match.
  3. They rarely stay in their spot. The Eagles usually target a couple players and either trade up to get them, or trade down for extra picks if they can’t get him. With some major assets this year (an extra 1st and 5th round pick), some movement is very possible.

Regardless, we always check out mock drafts to see who could fall to us and form our own opinions about who we should draft. Right now, I would be thrilled with Mel Kiper’s or Don Banks’ projection.

What are your thoughts on the Eagles draft? And are there any mocks you would like to see added?

Pete: hit the nail on the head; remember last year’s draft with the peripheral movement of picks and trading or the year before that with Kevin Kolb?? if anything the Eagles are ridiculously unpredictable, more than any team in the NFL. drives you nuts, it does, to speculate cos apart from i think the 06 one with Bunkley they have never followed mock drafts, drafted for needed positions with high picks (WR, LB) or listened to the ignorant clamor of the fans. well you can be sure of one thing though; there will be at least 3 linemen in the draft- probably 2 offensive and one D (snore)

my advice to anyone: don’t even bother trying.

Does anyone really think Reid would use a #1 on a running back?  It seems like its against his philosophy to draft one before the 3rd round… and for the most part that is a good idea.  Drafting a RB is as risky and unpredictable as drafting a QB, but with less reward.

  4. Pete says:

    tk76-

logic says no. but the success of rookie RB’s last year (Chris Johnson, Matt Forte) might change his mind. I didn’t think he would take DeSean Jackson either.
And with Buckhalter likely gone, and Westbrook always hurt, it’s a pretty big need. That might force his hand.
  5. Pete says:

    jkay-

lineman are boring, thats for sure. But one thing I do like about Andy Reid is I agree with his philosophy that the game is won at the line of scrimmage.
He is a very good talent evaluator, you have to give him that. Pretty much our entire defense last year was drafted by Reid and co.
Drafts are hardly ever slam dunks, but I feel a hell of a lot better with Reid drafting than the Lions, Raiders, Chiefs, et al do with their guys. Only a handful of teams draft better than the Birds.
  6. Stu says:

Yeah, no chance trying to figure out who will “fall” to the Eagles at #21 and #28 in any mock.  Probably better to focus on players that would make sense on this team, even if they are “projected” as earlier picks or later rounders (remember Matt McCoy in the 2nd round??)

We all know that they are not taking a linebacker.  O-Line and D-Line early, with a flier on some random guy later (like Westbrook or Ryan Moats).  I would love Shonn Green in the 2nd or 3rd round

  7. Stu says:

“random guy” = under the radar running back, sorry

  8. jazzman says:

you can add these to your chart, from sporting news:
    21. knowshon moreno, RB georgia
    28. louis delmas, S western michigan
    53. maurice evans, DE penn state

  9. Shawn says:

Shows you how these guys that compile mock drafts know nothing.  Andy will never, ever, ever take a RB in the 1st round.   He rarely uses Correll, who always produces and never gave Tony Hunt a shot.  So – I see the TE out of Oklahoma State and a OT in the first -  and a safety/CB in the 2nd — by 3rd round – maybe a RB.

BTW – why did he cut Tony Hunt and not Lorenzo Booker last yr?

  10. Adam says:

Most of these would be perfect.  I have been calling for the drafting of Chris Wells for a while now and I would be shocked if he fell to 21, but I would be quite pleased.  And you know the OT is coming in the first round too, so just suck it up and deal even if its not sexy.  A TE or S has to be one of those top 3 picks too, unless Demps really is the future.

  11. Stu says:

I am hoping this guy is healthy next season and will help in the secondary:

2008 4th rd. pk 32. (131) Philadelphia Eagles (Compensatory selection) – Jack Ikegwuonu, CB Wisconsin

  12. deepsixersuede says:

Stu, Green in the 2nd or 3rd is a possibility. I would love a stud blocking tightend, Cosell on ESPN radio said it was a major weakness and all the other good teams seem to have one.

  13. tk76 says:

Thought I would pass along that the blog don’t Boo the Birds (an off-shoot of Depressed fan) is reporting that the Julius Peppers is interested in becoming an Eagle.  Click the TK76 above for the link (I hate waiting for inline links to be cleared so this is easier.)

  14. Michael Donnelly says:

Remember how excited we all were when we got a gift in the second round of Winston Justice?   That was supposed to be an amazing draft both the 1st round picks we supposedly were thinking of getting landed to  us in rounds 1 and 2

since then ?   Bunkley has been ok, not great not bad, certainly not the impact player we all (me especially) thought he would be.   Justice, he will likely be cut this year, a complete bust

  15. Coach Mike says:

Good Site, How can we figure out the draft when I have no idea what they’re doing. We got , 1 R.B. , 0 F.B. A T.E that can’t block. 2 safties and no back ups, no L.T. , a Weak center. Stop me when you guys get depressed. I would love to see Pettigrew or Moreno fall & I think one might. How do we fill the other needs. I usually have a good feel. I gotta tell you they have me wondering. Yeah it’s early but guys that could have helped a lot are flying off the board. Check out my sight. My kids set it up for xmas. Email me if you have a problem & I’ll shoot you the link.
