Eagles Rumors: Birds in lead for Tony Gonzalez?

by Pete

Don Banks of CNNSI.com is reporting that the Eagles are interested in acquiring Tony Gonzalez and may be in the lead for his services.

The buzz about the Chiefs resuming their attempts to trade veteran tight end Tony Gonzalez has restarted, and it sounds as if the Eagles might have nosed ahead of the Falcons as the most likely trade partner. Philly is thought to be willing to give up a third-rounder for Gonzalez. But Kansas City is seeking at least a second-round pick for a player it considers a future Hall of Famer, and may not be willing to bear the brunt of any criticism that could come if it’s perceived to have given away Gonzalez too cheaply.

In my Eagles draft preview, I said I’d like them to use their 1st rounder to either trade for Anquan Boldin, or draft Knowshon Moreno. But, if we can get Tony Gonzalez (who is 33) for the 3rd rounder, it’s a slam dunk to keep the 1st rounder and take Moreno. I don’t think you’d find an Eagles fan not doing back-flips after a draft that netted us Jason Peters, Tony Gonzalez and Knowshon Moreno.

All of this will make it so much more disappointing when we draft an OL in the first round, claiming we “always draft the best player available.”

I have been pushing Pettigrew but if we can get Moreno and Gonzalez that would seem to be a better option. Pete, if a 3rd rounder doesn!t get him, would you add a 5th, we have a few of them.

Drafting Moreno or Brown in the first, a CB or DE in the 2nd, and getting Gonzalez for their 3rd would be an unbelievable draft. At that point their offseason would have to be graded an A+, despite the Brian Dawkins mess.

Looks like the Falcons just completed the trade for Gonzalez today.  Pick in next years draft from what I’ve read.  Seems like a good opportunity for the Birds that didn’t happen.  Typical.

Gonzo for a year, Maybe two, isn’t worth a 2nd round pick. Boldin or bust?
