Eagles Rumors: Shawn Springs to visit, sign?

shawn-springs-150x200Looks like the Eagles have found a replacement for Lito Sheppard. Several outlets are reporting that Shawn Springs is scheduled to visit, and there is a press conference scheduled for tomorrow, presumably to announce his signing.

Springs was released by the Redskins to help with the Albert Haynesworth and DeAngelo Hall signings. He would likely be the 4th corner on the team behind Samuel, Brown and Hanson.

I doubt this puts Sheldon Brown on the market, as some have speculated, because the Eagles value the corner position so much, and need depth at the position. But, Springs was rated as the 25th best corner in the league by Scouts Inc. prior to last season, so he seems to have the talent to be more than a 4th corner. Maybe a pre-cursor to a Brown move to Safety? Or maybe just a depth move.

One intriguing note is that Springs played a little Safety when Leron Landry was out, so, while unlikely, he could be a candidate there. Reid will probably clear that up at the PC tomorrow.

Would be another positive signing, but I still think this team needs to make 2 big moves.

UPDATE: Spring visited, DID NOT sign, and told reporters that we are looking at him as a Brian Dawkins replacement at Safety. He is likely visiting the Saints as well and will choose between us, the Saints and the Patriots.

I don’t see Springs being a 4th corner, this seems like it is definitely a pre-cursor to a move to safety for Sheldon Brown.

The Saints signed Jabari Greer, likely ending their search for a cover corner.

    SPRINGS TO SIGN WITH PATS
Posted by Mike Florio on March 5, 2009, 2:50 p.m. EST

Last year, the New England Patriots lost a cornerback to Philadelphia, when Asante Samuel jumped to the Eagles on the first day of free agency.
This year, the Pats have managed a small measure of revenge, winning the two-team derby with the Eagles for the services of veteran corner Shawn Springs.
According to Shalise Manza Young of the Providence Journal, Springs is expected to sign with the Patriots.
Springs was released last Friday by the Redskins.
