Eagles Rumors: Sheldon Brown for Anquan Boldin?

by Pete on March 3, 2009

Well, this is certainly an interesting rumor. Adam Caplan of NFL Radio said today that the Eagles are showing interest in former Bills CB Jabari Greer. Considering they already have Asante Samuel, Sheldon Brown and Joselio Hanson and several other positions of need, it’s a curious rumor.

Caplan insinuates that if the Eagles signed Greer they would then be able to dangle Sheldon Brown as part of a trade package for the Cardinals Anquan Boldin. Right now the Cardinals aren’t interested in trading Boldin, but if they decide they are, they would want a starting corner as part of the deal and it would be great to get him, and even better to do it without giving up a 1st round pick.

A Greer signing would also give the Eagles the option of moving Sheldon Brown to safety, something he has said he would be interested in. This worked for the Cardinals with Antrel Rolle, but I’m not sure it’s the best time to be experimenting with new positions.

The Eagles are off to a pretty bad start to what was a promising off-season. They’ve got plenty of time to make a splash, but I think they’ve got to do a lot from now until August.

I personally do want the Eagles to trade Sheldon Brown, nor do I think they will.  Sheldon Brown is a great cornerback who gave up only ONE touchdown all year, and that was a jump ball against Fitzgerald.  Nobody stopped him this year.  I want a star receiver, but not at the risk of seriously hurting our defense.  Plus, we lost enough chemistry and veterans, we do not want to lose another solid player.

Thanks but no thanks. I’d rather have Sheldon. While we are at it, enough of this McNabb for Cutler talk. I like Cutler but his attitude would get him killed in this city. No one wants the QB version of T.O.

I believe this rumor probably has no legs. Why would a team thin with Defensive backs get rid of another quality player?

Ken-

yeah, seemed like the guy was taking some solid stuff (Jabari Greer) and extrapolated it out to some pure speculation.

I am on board with this. Can you say rebuilding?

6 Anthony March 2, 2009 at 10:08 pm

Liam, if the Eagles traded for Boldin, they would most certainly not be rebuilding.

Well, people seem to be against the theoretical move, and I’m not sure how I feel, but here’s an argument for it…

if they made the move (say, Sheldon and a 2nd or 3rd rounder) and signed Greer, they would have 1 elite corner in Samuel and 2 OK ones in Hanson and Greer. They have their 2008 4th round pick Jack Ikegwuonu healthy this season. Many said he was a 2nd/3rd round talent who slipped because he would be out all of 2008.
Since the Boldin trade wouldn’t cost a 1st rounder, they could use one of theirs on one of several 1st round corners. That gives them 4 young corners and Samuel for next year. Brown is 30, and about to begin the downside of his career. While this might hurt the secondary next year, trading him while he still has high value might not be a bad idea.
With Boldin and Stacy Andrews on board, they could use their other 1st rounder on someone like Chris Wells or Brandon Pettigrew.
Overall, these moves (add on signing someone like Jim Leonhard as a stop gap until Demps is ready) would help the offense more than it would hurt the defense.
Like I said…not entirely sure how I feel about the theoretical move, but that’s an argument for it.

When you consider how much the Giants have improved their defensive unit and to a minor degree the same with Washington, and then look at the number of needs the Eagles have, rebuilding might not seem to far of a stretch. Certainly as of right now this team is not better than the one that lost to the Cardinals in January. The draft alone will not solve all the issues. Depending on a large number of rookies and other young players isn’t far from rebuilding.

Now, having Bolden would be nice. I don’t agree that the Eagles need all the weapons that McNabb says he needs but another RB, a decent FB, and a blocking TE wouldn’t hurt. More than anything, McNabb needs to be more accurate with his passes and play big when we need him to play big.

I think if they could get a decent FB like weaver from seattle, that would improve the running game alot. Then draft mcCoy or wells for a one two punch w/westbrook. I think their recievers are okay but adding a tight end like gonzales or pettigrew would be nice. I also hear Braylon Edwards is up for trade bait. He drops alot of balls from Quinn so I don’t see him having to much luck with a Mcnabb fireball.

Ain’t gonna happen.

How not they would be getting a younger player in return? That would make the 35 year-olds  Dawkins and Runyan gone,  30 year old Brown gone (if they did this trade) and probably 34 year old Tra Thomas. – That doesn’t sound like rebuilding? Every player would be under 30 except of course Westbrook and McNabb. I get the feeling that this regime thinks they gave it one last shot with MOST  of the early 200os nucleus. Now remember rebuilding is really different in the NFL than any other sport. You can still contend in a rebuilding year in the NFL. Maybe rebuilding isn’ the right word but they are completly retooling. That sounds better. RETOOLING

By the way can you imagine this offense if they drafted Pettigrew and either Lesean or Knoshon while acquiring Boldin? They would be DEEEEEADLY!! Any word on fellow little guy Jim Leonhard? I think he would be a good fit in a rotation with Demps. Jim Johnson loves playing 3 safeties an I like the combination of having those 3 guys (Mikel, Demps & Leonhard).  Of course the Eagles could have resolved this issue a while back by drafting Kenny Phillips!!!

We need Antwan Bolding!!!!!1111111!!!!!

14 James Fayleez March 3, 2009 at 11:35 am

I like how the Eagles are getting younger with a QB who is on his last go-round with trying to win a Super Bowl. Yeah, that makes sense.

GO ALL OUT AND TRY TO WIN IT IN THESE NEXT TWO YEARS – or else trade McNabb and rebuild entirely.

15 Michael Donnelly March 3, 2009 at 3:39 pm

Didn’t we try this exact same thing last year with Lito for Boldin ?  We dangled Sheppard all year long brought in his replacement and he played like crap, we wound up getting a 5th round pick for him.  What a waste of a former pro-bowl player.

Don’t do this to Sheldon.

16 Kevin March 3, 2009 at 4:20 pm

Even if we sign Greer, that does not mean we have to trade Sheldon.  I think the Sheldon for Boldin rumors are made up.  Player for player deals rarely go down.  They are almost always players for picks.
If Greer really is a upgrade, then I am all for it.  Sign Greer, move Sheldon to safety.  Makes for a pretty nice secondary.

Looks like he had the right idea but the wrong guy. I guess we’ll be getting CB Springs from the Skins.
I agree with the people on here who think that Springs or Sheldon would play safety or just add more CB depth. Caplan seems to have just made up the part about Boldin. He doesn’t even have a “source” not that they are terribly credible either. Just speculation.

Greer signed with the Saints.
