Eagles sign Vick to 6 year, $100 million deal

In case you haven’t yet seen – the Eagles and Michael Vick agreed to a 6-year, $100 million deal that will keep Vick under the Eagles’ control until his 36th birthday in 2016.

Some details on the deal gathered from Twitter…

  • $40 million guaranteed
  • His 2011 cap number is reduced, but not by as much as people might have thought – goes from $16.2 to $14.4
  • With the franchise tag off of Michael Vick, it means we can use it on Desean Jackson next year if need be

UPDATE:
PFT saying the 6th year of the deal is a “phony” year – real contract is 5 years, $80 mill, $35.5 guaranteed.
Here is how Vick’s deal compares to other notable QB deals…

Michael Vick, Eagles, 2011 (5 year, $80 mill, $35.5 guaranteed)
Peyton Manning, Colts, 2011 (5 year, $90 mill, $54.4 guaranteed)
Tom Brady, Patriots, 2010 (4 year, $72 mill, $48 guaranteed)
Eli Manning, Giants, 2009 (6 year, $97.5 mill, $35 guaranteed)
Philip Rivers, Chargers, 2009 (6 year, $92 mill, $38 guaranteed)<
Ben Roethlisberger, Steelers, 2008 (8 years, $102 mill, $36 guaranteed)

So his deal is on par with Eli and Rivers, and less than Brady and Manning. That seems about right. It’s certainly a risk to give a QB of Vick’s age that kind of deal – but every long-term deal carries risk. Obviously the Eagles think that he can continue to play the way he did last year for several years to come.

The 100 mil a little high for my blood, but I think that the 40mil guaranteed kind of makes up for it. Elite QB’s going into the future are probably going to get a little bit more guaranteed money than Vick. Overall it’s a good contract and he deserves it. He’s done and said all the right things since he came to Philly. Dude deserves to get his life back.

I’m pretty sure a large sum of this will go to his creditors anyway (not that that helps the Eagles in any way)

Vick originally did claim he was going to visit schools every other week for an anti-dog fighting campaign yet I haven’t seen/heard much about that lately.  Anyone?!? (I wouldn’t be surprised if $100 mill suddenly changes his tune...)
Looks like I personally won’t be supporting the Eagles for another 6 years…

Please. Other NFL players have done worse. He served MORE time than was suggested. He’s a changed man, give him a break. If your child got caught selling pounds of marijuana and spent two years in jail wouldn’t you want him/her to have a second chance?

I find myself seconding this emotion.  I got fairly swept up in his fast climb back last year, and recapturing a starting job, after the initial disgust with signing him.  But yet, I find myself back to square 1 this year. I think i really don’t like the guy, but then again, maybe I get swept up in it again.  Who knows, who cares sort of thing. Seems stronger anti than last year, for whatever reason.

I didnt really get behind Vick emotionally last year on a personal level, and I dint expect that I will this year either. But I still like to watch football, the eagles are still my team, and I still want to see them win…

I dont see the years as a huge issue – football contracts give team a lot more leeway to get around that than the other sports if performance or injuries become an issue (at least as far as i understand it).  Not a bad move for the Birds.

Assuming, that is, the O Line can keep him from getting slaughtered in the first couple games.  In alot of ways, this is the bizarro-Andy Reid team.  Seems like he’s always overemphasized the Lines over the skill players.  Seems like this year, he went all out on the skill players & let the Lines slide a bit.  Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

PFT says the $100 million deal isn’t quite what it seems

The 6th year will void almost automatically because of a stipulation in the contract.

Real deal: 5 years, $80 mill, $35.5 guaranteed.
