Evaluating the ‘07-’08 76ers

by Dannie

The Sixers’ playoff run is over which means no more basketball in Philadelphia for a while. It’s a sad, sad time for hoops fans in the city.

I find it safe to say the 2007-2008 campaign was an unexpectedly positive one for our 76ers. That is the main reason for the first time in a while that Sixers fans are both optimistic and still 76ered-UP going into the offseason. Now it is time to start focusing on what’s next for this team. There are a host of topics and issues to talk about from the draft, free agency and possible trades. But in my opinion you can’t do any of that without first evaluating what we already have.

In the next couple of weeks I will go through the entire ‘07-’08 Philadelphia 76ers roster and give a snapshot evaluation of each player. I will strive to keep it standard across all players and at the very least cover a few main things:

  1. 2007 season review
  2. Will/should the player be on the roster for next season
  3. If they will be on the roster; what they should improve this offseason (note: this will be very targeted since ideally we want the players to get better in every aspect of their game)
  4. The ideal role of said player on the upcoming 2008 team (since after 6 years with the club Samuel Dalembert still doesn’t know his role)

As always if you guys have something in particular you want me to cover, let me know in the comments, and I will try to work it in.

A shot on Slammin Sammy already? He improved as an offensive rebounder a little, fouled much less, and blocked/goaltended same as you would expect. He also stepped up in spots in one-on-one defense. I think he is beginning to learn to play basketball.

He will never be a smart player though.

Joe, not a shot at all. I was happy with Sam’s improvement this season. But, all year Dalembert has said himself publicly that he doesn’t know his role on the team at times.

Dannie, great Q & A with Daryl Morey, the GM of the Rockets (thanks TrueHoop), maybe you can include it in your next edition of Brotherly Link Love:

ops Dannie, I started a similar set of new posts just today, breaking down Andre Miller’s season, before reading this, sorry: not trying to steal you the “idea” of course.

But we can exchange comments on our sites, it will be nice

Can’t wait to read your post about Dalembert then, LOL !

BTW, who are you rooting for in the East, now that the Sixers season ended? I’ll go with Pistons, yeah…

Sixerzguy - Thanks, I am going to doing a Brotherly Link Love tonite and will add that one. By the way, Pete took you up on your suggestion to redo the Philadelphia Spurs post and should be up tonight or tomorrow so keep an eye out.

Ricky - I will also link to your A. Miller post in my link love tonight as well. The more Sixers talk the merry in my opinion.
