It’s Official: Kareem Rush Will Be a 76er

by Dannie on July 28, 2008

It’s official – Kareem Rush will sign with the 76ers tomorrow.

The 76ers have reached an agreement with free-agent guard Kareem Rush.

A source close to Rush has confirmed that the shooting guard is in Philadelphia and will sign with the Sixers tomorrow. – Philly.com

Ed Stefanski has delivered on his promises we now have one shooter on the roster. Here’s a video of what the Sixers fans will get and should expect from Kareem Rush (apologize for a blurriness)

Nice signing. Could be one of the deepest teams in the NBA if they keep the roster intact. Suspect Willie G may be on another team next year. Ed keeps making the necessary moves.

itll be interesting to see where the minutes go this year.
there are 48 minutes in a game, 5 players on the court at a time so that’s 240 minutes per game. Here are the minutes for our current roster last year (used 2 years ago for Brand)

Andre Iguodala, 39.6
Elton Brand, 38.4
Andre Miller, 36.7
Sam Dalembert, 33.2
Willie Green, 26.6
Lou Williams, 23.4
Reggie Evans, 23.2
Kareem Rush, 21.2
Thaddeus Young, 21.0
Royal Ivey, 19.1
Jason Smith, 14.5
Marreese Speights, 14.5 (we’ll give him the same as Smith)

That’s a total of 311.4 minutes, and that’s not including the rise in minutes (hopefully) for Lou and Thad.

hopefully Green doesn’t play and you gotta think they might move Evans if they can with Smith and Speights already backing up Brand.

3 deepsixersuede 07.28.08 at 10:12 pm

This evens out the loss of Carney; Ivey can shoot the 3 better than Ollie; Brand can shoot better than Reggie; Spieghts can shoot better than S.Randolph; if Iggy,Thad , L.Will., and Jason can all improve 2 percentage points from the field we should be able to play with anybody. An injury at any position for a SHORT time should not be a problem.

@Pete

I have been trying to come up with some sort of a breakdown for minutes for the Sixers for the last few weeks(assuming generic 3rd PG, shooter, vet big) and have been unsuccessful in every attempt.

Good luck to anyone who tries.

Initial thoughts… look at everyone’s minutes in march and ignore the rest of the year because that was when Cheeks wasn’t messing around. Also, I would think he abuses Miller, Iguodala, Brand, and Sammy less than they are used to since we have depth.

5 deepsixersuede 07.28.08 at 10:48 pm

Center: Sam [32 min.], Jason [16 min.] ; Power Forward: Elton [34 min.], Reggie [5 min.], Maurice [5 min.], Thad [4 min.] ; Small Forward : Thad [26 min.], Iggy [14 min.], Kareem [8 min.] ; Shooting Guard : Iggy [22 min.], L.Will. [16 min.], Willie [ 8 min.], Kareem [2 min.] ;Point Guard : Andre [32 min.], L.Will.[ 8 min.], Royal , with cheese [8 min.]. Your right Joe, it is tough this year for Mo to keep everybody happy.

What a stud Ed Stefanski is?! Let’s try to figure out these minutes.

Andre Miller-34
Andre Iguodala-38
Thad-25
Brand-38
Sam-32

Lou-27
Willie-13
Rush-11
Speights-2
Smith-11
Evans-8
Ivey-1

That’s tough. I’m assuming if the roster stays the same Speights and Ivey will see a lot of DNPs. It’s hard to predict Evans and Willie especially, since they started quite a bit last season.

7 The Duke 07.29.08 at 12:46 am

Andre Miller-34
Andre Iguodala-37
Thad-25
Brand-37
Sam-31

Lou-25
Willie-11
Rush-12
Speights-7
Smith-11
Evans-8
Ivey-2

8 jkay 07.29.08 at 1:16 am

this is it, this is the move that completes it, now there are no gaping holes in the team anymore. ed deserves sumthin good for christmas.

9 Dave T 07.29.08 at 1:16 am

I like the way everyone’s considering dolling out minutes for our squad, and agree with what most people are saying.

-I think the only person on the team that’s going to log regular 35+ minutes is Iguodala.

-We just invested 5 years and every dollar in Brand…no WAY he gets more then 35 minutes per game for at least half a year, especially coming off a fairly major surgery.

-They also aren’t going to want to burn out A Miller as he’s at the age when players energy/body starts to wear down faster…given the fact that Lou and Ivey can both play point, I see him getting 33-34 mpg (ideally).

-I think Lou’s minutes will be slightly increased to about 25 a game, Thad’s at around 27-28 per game. Willie Green will take the brunt having his minutes slashed in half…I think Reggie Evans and J Smith will get most of the burn for bench bigs (Reggie for vet experience and the bucket and pail work, J Smith for the jumpshot), leaving Speights (this year) to be the odd man out.

-K Rush and W Green probably in the 10-12 minute range avg…but more like one gets 14-15 one night and the other 5, or vice versa, depending on matchups and if/when we need defense/slashing vs. shooting more.

10 jkay 07.29.08 at 1:20 am

if i’m ed stefanski, reggie evans’ contract suddenly looks a lot bigger to me
hmm who could be traded real soon?

11 Joe 07.29.08 at 1:47 am

A few questions I have…

1) Will Brand be happy with playin 5 minutes less a night essentially making him a 10-9 guy?
2) Will Mo Cheeks do something insane and actually cut Willie’s minutes?
3a) Is Thad going to start?
3b) Thad played like 28+ a night over the last 3 months, how doesn’t that go up to like 33 if he is starting?
4) Will Cheeks even entertain the thought of giving Rush some actual PT?

12 Noah 07.29.08 at 3:42 am

we have to keep in mind that minute-per-game averages are not for every game, just the ones in which they play. no team actually plays 12 guys every night. most teams play 10 or less, with the end-of-the-rotation guys getting their minutes because of injuries throughout the season. for example, this year Ollie only played in 40 games, Booth only played in 31, etc.

guys like Ivey and Rush will probably not be every-night players because of their roles. Speights was specifically picked as a long-term project and will probably also not see the court every night. Reggie and Willie have both become expendable players with difficult contracts to move, so they will both probably see a huge decrease in minutes.

also, we had guys like Amundson, Shav, and Herb Hill who basically never played (in Hill’s case, actually never). every roster has guys like that. who will they be this year? tends to be inexperienced players or guys making the minimum (Speights, Smith, Ivey and Rush fit that mold).

we also need to keep in mind that Miller is another year older and Brand is coming off a major injury. how do those observations affect the way minutes realistically get broken down?

13 Noah 07.29.08 at 3:46 am

forgot to add, in response to the video, that is not what we should expect from Rush. as one of the announcers notes, we happen to be watching a career night from him (6/6 from downtown). he also puts up nights like 2/10 from 3-pt land in a losing effort against the Heat, who last year were one of the worst teams ever assembled.

14 sfw 07.29.08 at 7:54 am

Let me try.

Iggy – 37
Brand – 35
AMill – 32
SammyDDDD – 32
Thad – 29
LouWill – 25
JSmith/Reggie – 23
Willie/Rush – 20
Ivey – 10

Speights(not in the rotation)

wow. I just wung it and came up with 243 minutes. Pretty close. Think it’s in the ballpark. Like everyone else. We’ll see. I think there is one more move up Ed’s sleeve……………….

15 TT32 07.29.08 at 8:28 am

Sweet Lou turned down 3.9 million and is talking to Cleveland. Our backcourt is starting to shape up as Miller, Green, Iggy, Rush and Ivey. Iggy should be signed soon with Okafor deal getting done.

16 Pete 07.29.08 at 9:19 am

TT32-

Where did you read that? He might be talking to Cleveland, but they can only offer the mid-level, they are already over the cap. I guess they could make a pretty good offer from their mid-level. If they sign him, we’d probably sign West right back from them.

Noah is right, 12 people dont play every night, and people get hurt, which inflates minutes.

17 Dannie 07.29.08 at 9:26 am

TT32 – I saw that and it gave me a really good idea for a post. Let me repeat: th Sixers will resign Louis Williams and Andre Iguodala!

Remember Cleveland can’t just come in and steal Lou the Sixers get to match and they will. Further, Cleveland will not offer Louis Williams much more than the reported $3.9M the Sixers offered if you have been following the Gibson signing ($4.2 average per year with the first year only at $3.7M) and negotiations with Delonte West which have been reported as “a little more” than what Gibson got.

So you can continue to include Lou in the guard rotation because he will be there.

18 dre 07.29.08 at 10:16 am

It was surprising to see Lou turned down 3.9M. His value to the Sixers is a tad BELOW Gibson’s value to the Cavs.

Atleast a parameter is set and something can get done soon.

19 Joe 07.29.08 at 10:31 am

I meant to say 19-9, oops. Oh well.

20 Jordan 07.29.08 at 11:10 am

Uh oh. I did say I hope Lou gets Sasha-type money which was 5 mill a year.

I still think he’ll stay in Philly, for what price, I don’t know.

21 The Duke 07.29.08 at 12:08 pm

Couple things…about a week back during the article on Lou and comparable players to determine his contract value I mentioned Gibson and his $4.2 million as the benchmark saying $6 million was way too high on Lou. Looks like that is right where he’ll be falling in, with a current offer of $3.9 that will probably be bumped up a little.

After seeing Biedrins and Okafor sign for $10 million plus, I’m going to have to revise my salary estimations for Iggy. Previously I thought $11 million would be appropriate, but we’re probably talking $12 – $12.5 now. Granted they play different positions, but Iggy’s proven a lot more than both of those guys.

22 Dannie 07.29.08 at 12:13 pm

The Duke – You jumped the gun on me, haha.

I am working on a post to discuss just that. With the flurry of signings lately I have started to put together a post with 2008 comparables for both Lou and Iguodala. As well as some insight into how agents fight for players in negotiations I recently gained from an article with some really good agent quotes as he goes through negotiations with a clients team.

Will try to bang it out tonite after my basketball game.

23 Dannie 07.29.08 at 12:15 pm

Duke by the way is PCP Sports your new sports blog? Noticed you recently started linking your name.

24 The Duke 07.29.08 at 12:33 pm

Yeah, just started it up recently. Have a couple buddies who’ll be hopping on as contributors soon. Very new to this, I’d love some tips since you guys do such a great job over here.

25 Dave T 07.29.08 at 2:04 pm

Thought I’d mention a piece of news that flew under the radar:

Former Sixer Herbert Hill signed with Le Mans of France. Slightly amusing is the fact that he will be teamed with another former Sixer we only had for one year, and also did not play due to a leg injury, Sam Clancy.

Le Mans is one of the annually good French teams, and is playing in Euroleague 08-09, along with the regular season for the French Basketball League A. Best of luck Herbert!

@Pete:

You’re right…even if the Cavs managed to swipe away Lou Williams from us (about a 1.5% chance of actually happening), we would immediately go for Delonte West. Delonte would actually be a great fit on this team. If I had to pick between the two, I’d rather have Delonte in the short term, but Lou in the long run.

26 The Duke 07.29.08 at 2:13 pm

@Dave T

I was actually wondering myself if a swap of West and Lou might be a possibility. Don’t know exactly how it would have to work out, but I think in order for us to get West it would have to be a sign and trade since he’s not going to sign for the minimum.

27 Jordan 07.29.08 at 3:26 pm

I love Lou too much to even think that way, but Delonte would be a very solid fit for the next couple years. Lou’s the point guard of the future in my opinion though.

28 matto 07.29.08 at 5:23 pm

I personally think K. Rush will spend alot of his minutes with Brand in the game. Cheeks usually likes to send guys in pairs, and the main reason they went out and got a 3 point threat was to disuade other teams from doubling Brand. He wont be a starter by any means, but I see him getting the bulk of his time at the end of quarters.

I do think W. Green will get the bump in a sign and trade for another 3 point threat. Willies 28.5% just doesn’t cut it.

29 deepsixersuede 07.29.08 at 7:33 pm

E.S. said on 950 today that both guys turned down more money elsewhere; we went from having a guy, A.I., who nobody wanted to play with to a guy, Brand, that is a free agent magnet. I think E.S. , after signing Iggy and L.Will., is done for the summer, except for whispering into A.Miller!s ear, ” I!ve built it, now will you stay?”

30 Dave T 07.29.08 at 8:12 pm

I’m sure moving Reggie Evans’s contract next summer (and hopefully Willie Green’s) will be a big priority to make sure we can offer A Miller a frontloaded, three year contract to make sure he stays.

31 Dave T 07.29.08 at 8:20 pm

I didn’t realize Aaron Mckie had been retained as an assistant coach for the Sixers after his career revival “playing” for Memphis last year (aka: a free 800k) . Has anyone that’s been watching the summer league games seen him around on the bench, or is he more being involved with player development?

Also, is Moses Malone still on staff helping out with the big guys?

32 Jordan 07.29.08 at 9:09 pm

@ Dave

I watched all the Summer League games and didn’t see McKie at all. I wasn’t paying that close attention to the Sixers coaches, but I’m sure if Aaron McKie was there I would’ve spotted him. Don’t quote me on it though.

As for Malone, I don’t see why he wouldn’t be there. He was there all last season and those types of coaches usually stick around for a while. He still needs to finish what he started with Sam.

33 aaronmckie4mvp 07.29.08 at 9:20 pm

let me field this one, gentlemen.

Aaron McKie was an unpaid assistant coach for the Sixers in February when he was included in a trade from the Lakers to Memphis (I know it sounds crazy but somehow it happened.) he was released from Memphis on may 9th. He will certainly come home to roost in Philly as an assistant (if he has not already) – he is a philly guy —Simon Gratz High/Temple….. too bad he cant be a player/coach with that money mid-range jumper and 3-point marksmenship

34 Jordan 07.29.08 at 11:02 pm

I can tell by your name that you’d love that.

35 Noah 07.30.08 at 5:55 am

All this Delonte West talk is silly. Last year, playing in 19 more games than West, Lou shot better from the field, the line, and 3-pt territory. He had a higher rate of steals, scored at a higher rate, and had a better assist-to-turnover ratio. He’s also 3 years younger and already has the benefit of having played with our other core players for their entire stay here. He’s a better option today and he’ll be a better option in 3 years.
