When you have a 4-game series on the road against the team with (by far) the best record in baseball, there is no reason you shouldn’t be happy with a split… except when it could have been a sweep. Brad Lidge blew 2 saves, but the Phillies hitters and fielders certainly didn’t help the cause, and the Phils left L.A. feeling like they had a really missed an opportunity to push the Mets and Braves further back.
2009: 33-22
2008: 31-24
2007: 27-28
Player of the Series: Cole Hamels (9 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K, Win)
Goat of the Series: Brad Lidge (2 blown saves, 1.2 IP, 3 runs, 1 ER)
The Good News
- The rotation had another great series, sporting a 1.67 ERA over the 4 starts. Blanton has a 1.80 ERA over his last three starts and Moyer has a 3.60 ERA over his last four. Since the Myers injury, the rotation has a 2.66 ERA over 10 starts and has averaged 6.4 innings per start. I think it may have woken them up a bit.
- Ryan Madson for the all-star team? Only 3 NL relievers (with 25+ IP) have a lower ERA than Madson while also striking out more than a batter an inning, as Madson has. Those pitchers are likely all-stars K-Rod and Jonathan Broxton and Florida middle-reliever Kiko Calero. Right now, there is little doubt Madson is best 8th inning guy in the NL so far this season.
- Carlos Ruiz for the all-star team? Not really, but his .945 OPS leads all NL catchers with at least 100 plate appearances. He is also tied with former Phillies farmhand Jason Jaramillo for the NL catchers’ lead with 10 2B.
- 6 Phillies (Ibanez, Howard, Utley, Victorino, Werth, Rollins) are on pace for 100+ runs. The team record is 4, in 1932 (Chuck Klein, Don Hurst, Kiddo Davis, Dick Bartell). I believe (not certain) 6 would tie a record held by the 1931 Yankees (who scored the most runs in AL history).
- Every single one of our 8 regulars are on pace for 30+ doubles. I’ve got to think that would at least tie an NL record.
- The Phillies’ fans high attendance is starting to play a big part in the all-star voting, as Ibanez, Utley and Rollins (?) all lead their respective positions and every Phillies regular is in the top-5 at their position.
- Ryan Howard had very little chance of leading the league in strikeouts this season. Mark Reynolds of Arizona already has 81 (Howard has 68) and is on pace for a ridiculous 238 on the season. Not to be outdone, Chris Davis of Texas is on pace for 247, but he might not be up long enough to get them all.
The Bad News
- Brad Lidge’s issues with 2 strikes were apparent on Saturday, when he had 3 straight batters in 1-2 counts, with 2 outs, and couldn’t close the game. Batters have a .604 OPS against Lidge with 2 strikes, last year it was .374. He’s gotta be able to throw his slider close enough with 2 strikes that they aren’t taking it.
- Eric Bruntlett should never, ever, play in the OF again. If you want a right-handed OF bat off the bench, you have to bring up Mayberry and keep him in that role, Bruntlett has no business out there and it helped cost us the game on Saturday.
- Can’t complain too much about Ry-Ho, but I would really like to see more from an OBP standpoint. In 2006, his OBP was .425, in 2007 it was .392. Last year it dropped all the way to .339 and so far this year it is right around that at .337. That ranks him 58th in the NL. Obviously he makes up for it with his 7th ranked SLG%, but still, whether by more base hits or more walks, a player like him should have a higher OBP.
- The MLB Draft is today (starts at 6pm), and the Phillies don’t pick until 75, the lowest first pick of any team. Seattle gets our 1st round pick for Raul Ibanez. Had we offered Jamie Moyer arbitration and he signed elsewhere, we would have received a pick from that team (and if he had accepted, we’d have him under contract for 1 year, not 2). The Phillies had their best draft in years last year, so this isn’t a serious concern. It would be nice to see them pay over-slot for some players and also be active in the international market.
Series Preview: Phillies at New York Mets
The Phillies are hitting the Mets at the right time. Carlos Delgado and JJ Putz are out for several months and Jose Reyes for several weeks. Carlos Beltran has been banged up as well. But, the Mets still have Johan Santana, David Wright and a closer doing his best 2008 Brad Lidge impression. So far, the MLB’s up-and-coming rivalry has gone 3 of 4 to the Mets and Phillies are looking to change that while the Mets are short-handed.
Tuesday: Happ vs. Johan Santana (7-3, 2.00 ERA)
Wednesday: Hamels vs. Mike Pelfrey (4-2, 4.85 ERA)
Thursday: Moyer vs. Tim Redding (0-2, 6.97 ERA)
Three Questions for the Series
- Will the Phillies take advantage of a weakened Mets squad, or will they play down to their competition?
- Will Tim Redding continue his curious domination of the Phillies?
- Can we actually open a sizable division lead early in the season, something we haven’t done in the past 2 years?
Prediction
Man, Johan Santana just changes everything, doesn’t he? Whenever I see him pitching, I just assume a loss (even though he has 3 this year) because he always looks so unhittable. The Phillies really have to work the count with him today and get him out of the game as quickly as possible. Meanwhile JA Happ needs to keep the game tied until Johan gets out of there. A win tonight would be huge, because tomorrow’s pitching match-up is very favorable and Thursday could be a slug-fest and we have more weapons right now.
The Mets just got done with the Pirates and Nats, but now have an extremely tough stretch of games from now until the all-star break: PHI, NYY, BAL, TB, STL, NYY, MIL, PHI, LAD. All those teams except the Orioles have winnings records and 6 of those series are against the 4 best records in baseball right now, us, the Yankees, the Brewers and the Dodgers. If we beat down the Mets we could really start them on a downward slide, however, if they beat us, it could improve their confidence and help them navigate this tough stretch without getting pushed too far back. A sweep for us would be too good to be true, so I’m predicting we get the job done and take 2 of 3 in Queens.

Is there something Charlie sees that I don’t? every time I see Coste on the field I am confused; he seems to get much more PT than Carlos needs to rest…

For what it’s worth.
Anyway, I’d also like to see us take 2 out of 3, pick up a game on the Mets, and finish this trip on a good note. If we could, it would be tough to complain about a 7-3 road trip (went 8-2 on the last one—–odd that this is our second 10-game road trip already this year).
To that end, it’s good to see that Charlie is still on our guys and trying to keep them focused. Obviously the timing of his remarks is not coincidental.
About our 4th outfielder, I found this on mlbtraderumors.com:
teams began calling the Rockies about Ryan Spilborghs last week when Carlos Gonzalez was called up. Here are the details from Rosenthal’s column:
The Phillies, Red Sox and Tigers were among the teams inquiring about Spilborghs.
Spilborghs is used to that role, he has played all three outfield positions during each of his big league seasons, and is only under contract (a modest one at that) for this year. If he could be gotten cheaply, he could be a good option for this year, allowing Mayberry and the rest of our minor leaguers to play every day, get another year of development under their belts, and hopefully be ready to make it on the big league level starting next year.
About the draft, it’s hard to complain about giving up our first round pick for Ibanez, but you are dead-on about the Moyer situation, Pete. As much as the Phils deny that it was a reward thing with Moyer, it surely was and it will cost them.
Since we don’t have a pick until #75, I thought I would go through the first 74 picks and give my thoughts about how everything will unfold before we get our turn. Ready?
Pick #1……………….I’m just messing with you!
As far as us at #75, I did find this article on mlb.com. Again, for what it’s worth.
About the all-star voting, doesn’t the fact that Rollins leads all shortstops show that we the fans are being extremely supportive?
I’m not sure if anyone remembers this, but last year we had a little dustup when Rollins called the Philly fans front runners and spoke out about how we boo and are not very supportive. Hmmmmm.
Since he felt strongly enough to say all that last year, I wouldn’t mind seeing him publicly acknowledge the support he has gotten this year in spite of the fact that he is really stinking it up.
I won’t hold my breath.
The Spilborgh rumors worry me. It makes me think they would get some sort of package deal with Jason Marquis and think our rotation problems have been solved. Unless they can be had for nothing its not worth it. Bruntlett is not an all star outfielder, but for giving the regular guys a day off, a mix of Bruntlett, Dobbs, and Stairs should be fine. Dobbs held his own out there pretty well the other night. And we certainly do not need another Marquis/Penny like pitcher. We already have Blanton and Moyer to fill #4 and #5.
I really like the way Happ has been pitching. We will see how it goes tonight, but I tell you I love his composure and his stuff since the first time I saw him last year.
And as for Jimmy, hes gotten snubbed for the past few years when he has torn it up in the second half, including his phenomenal MVP season. I think hes become the best defensive SS in the league and we all know he’ll come around. I’m real glad hes getting so much support.
by the way just saw this…
Lidge just put on the 15 day DL
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4245956
Quick trigger Tim, just beat me! Thanks for the link.
Lidge to the DL is probably a good thing. Right now I’m more comfortable with Madson closing anyway.
It seems like we’ve been interested in Spilbourghs forever. I agree that a Spilbourghs/Marquis deal would be kind of disappointing because you’d have to think its the only move we make. But we’ll see. Depends who we would have to give up.
not sure why Paul Bako was the call up, and not a reliever like Escalona or Majewski.
Paul Bako is being called up to take Lidge’s spot on the roster?…Why would they call up a third catcher?…if they weren’t going to call up a pitcher to replace Lidge they should have called up Mayberry Jr. (or pull the trigger on a deal for Spilbourghs) to have a viable right handed bat off the bench…I agree with Tim on Rollins…while he definetely is not playing at an All-Star level this year he got badly snubbed his MVP year and a spot on the team this year would make up to that injustice…I also agree with bski though in that he should show some gratitude towards the fans who he was hard on last year since they are going to get him an All-Star bonus (players are rewarded those aren’t they?) for hitting terribly this year (although he has continued to field like an All-Star though)…Pete, I was also wondering what you thought the odds were that Charlie would get Madson on the All-Star team if he continues to pitch well in the closer’s role?
Tim……..I don’t agree with your Bruntlett/Dobbs/Stairs outfield idea. It has hurt us already and will most likely hurt us again should we continue with it. That said, I am only interested in Spilborghs, period, as I do agree that we do not need another marquis/Penny type pitcher.
About Rollins, I know he’s been snubbed in the past. My issue isn’t about the amount of support Rollins gets, it’s how he chooses to deal with it. All I’m saying is that if Rollins chooses to speak out about a perceived lack of support(last year), then he should also speak up about the loads of support he is getting through a pretty bad stretch(this year). It goes both ways.
Thank for the link about Lidge. We’ve all been wondering about him for a while now. Lidge has repeatedly denied that he is injured/still having knee problems(after the insert in the right shoe, the change in his mechanics, etc…), continually saying he just needs to regain his command. Was that all a smokescreen or is this a last gasp to try and finally figure out if something in that knee really is the problem after all. Wonder where this is headed. Funny thing is that I’m not too worried about the pen. Madson should be fine as the closer and Romero is back, so we should be OK.
Don’t get the Bako thing, unless Coste is heading somewhere in a deal.
jurnee-
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4245956
Lidge is on the DL and this is good news for us. We can let him figure out what’s wrong, get healthy and hope he can pitch better for us Without him blowing games for us. He’s got 6 blown saves this year already. I know we can’t expect him to be perfect but even if he had converted 4 of those blown saves we’d be 37-18 and cruising with a 7 game lead in the east. Eventually we will need Lidge to be our closer but I think this is the best move.
sorry for the repost of the link.
I would like that combo deal with the Rockies. It would help us and wouldn’t cost the farm. I would like them to either go all in and get a top notch guy like Halladay or if they can’t do that get a marginal guy like Marquis. He’s looks to be about as good as Blanton and hey it worked last year. I just don’t want to see them waste a couple prospects on and overrated middle of the road pitcher like Aaron Harang. Go all in or go cheap.
Bski – I know that that trio has hurt us and spilborghs would certainly help. I spose I am just worried that the Phils will once again make only a few minor tweaks to our lineup without delivering that great SP we are all hoping for. But who knows the way our rotation has stepped up who am I to second guess. I’d much rather have Happ and Bastardo continue to pitch like they have. Nothin like watching these young home grown guys have success.
I also agree with you on Bako, with our catching depth I think bringing him up is testing the waters to trade someone back there.
“we’d be 37-18 and cruising with a 7 game lead in the east” — these are the types of things I try not to think about, a man can go crazy thinking like this. I have many a time.
Tim…..I’m hoping for both a tweak (Spilborghs) and a major pickup (top of the rotation starter).
I think the Phils know that they need the starter. Heck, Manuel came right out and said that Myers was our #2 starter and that he feels we need a #2 to replace him. I also think the Phils know that we don’t have anyone in-house who can step into that role.
I like Happ and Bastardo, too. It’s just that I don’t know if either of them are built up enough (read: can throw that many innings) to successfully handle the demands of starting for the rest of the season(and possibly the playoffs), especially Bastardo. Next year is another story but now may be too soon.
Also, we know how much having a solid 1-2 punch at the top of your rotation means in the playoffs. We don’t have that now and I’d rather the Phils didn’t take a chance that something will develop/someone will emerge from within to address that need.
bski- you might also see Happ or Bastardo’s arms get tired as they continue to accrue more and more innings.
We obviously can’t get those games back but not throwing Lidge out there over these next few weeks should save us a few games.
man – get 4 HRs off Santana and lose…that’s tough.
finally made our first pick of the draft…
seems like Dugan was a major reach, but we’ll wait to see what everyone says.
yeah I couldn’t find much on Dugan in at all…he wasn’t in Keith Law’s top 100 prospects….
yeah – wasn’t in Rivals.com top 100 High School players. Didn’t have a write-up on MLB.com and someone on PhuturePhillies said they found him ranked as the 74th best high school player…in California…
doesn’t mean he’s bad I guess…will be interesting to see why the Phils say they picked him.
2nd pick coming up in a couple minutes
2nd pick – Kyrell Hudson, another HS CF….little weird….
Here is the inside info from the Phils on how and why they decided to DL Lidge today. From the Inky…………….
Ruben Amaro Jr. , Charlie Manuel, Rich Dubee, trainer Scott Sheridan, assistant general manager Scott Proefrock and Lidge met at the team hotel in Manhattan today, according to sources. There, management told Lidge he was headed to the D.L.
“He did not suggest it,” said Amaro. “I don’t know how on-board he was with it, because he doesn’t want to make any excuses, but he understands. Our medical people and staff took the decision out of it for him.”
Lidge has been saying he is heathy, and Dubee said on ESPN Sunday that the problem was strictly one of confidence. Here’s what Dubee had to say about that tonight: “How much do you want people to know about an injury? Do you want the opposition to know that he’s not moving very well on his knee and stuff? Sometimes you don’t tell the whole story…I don’t think confidence is as much a factor as being concerned that you’re healthy. I think the knee distracted us quite a bit.”
Ryan Madson is the closer until further notice, and the team will take their time to make sure Lidge is 100 percent before returning. J.C. Romero will assume most of Madson’s duties. Amaro said that Lidge will not be a Wally Pipp, no matter how well Madson does. “(Lidge) has done nothing to lose that job,” he said.
Why didn’t the team DL Lidge earlier, if the knee has been an issue since April? “The player never complained to the point where we needed to make a change (until now),” Amaro said, adding that last weekend’s blown saves were not the final straw; the team was concerned with Lidge’s stuff and velocity, and did not want to risk further injury. He said they would have made this move anyways, and also would have DL’d Lidge even if Romero’s suspension had not ended.
Lidge will undergo unspecified tests over the next few days, possibly including an MRI; two recent MRIs have shown no structural damage.
Also, the team considered recalling John Mayberry Jr., but ended up summoning veteran catcher Paul Bako because of the limited number of at-bats available. Mayberry still needs regular at-bats. Having Bako enables the Phils to use Chris Coste as a righty bat off the bench.
This answers a few questions I had earlier and I thought it might do the same for everyone else, too.
I wasn’t thrilled with how the 9th played out either, Pete. As much as “the book” says you don’t play for a tie on the road, I would have gladly taken that rather than have it end the way it did.
I was really hoping to see Rollins steal 2nd, especially once Feliz got ahead in the count (2-0 I believe). Then Feliz could have bunted him to 3rd, where he would be with only 1 out. At a minimum, I’d go your route and have Feliz bunt him to 2nd.
The thing is that even if it didn’t work out we would still only be 1 run down, meaning that the home run we were looking for still would have tied the game.
Also, our bench, or lack thereof, came into play when we had nobody other than Coste or Bako to pinch run for Stairs(that really took away any notion of playing for the tie).
Again, I know you don’t play for a tie on the road(at least Charlie doesn’t), which makes all of the above scenarios moot. Sometimes I just can’t understand that logic, though. I mean, you’d rather take your shot at winning but come up short and lose in 9 innings rather than try to tie the game and give yourself a chance to pull it out in extra innings? Whatever.
Even though Santana had just given up his 4th home run, I was surprised to see him taken out of the game, as was he. Wonder if Jerry Manuel will say anything to him about his behavior prior to being removed. His demeanor and gestures (yelling at the catcher, angrily walking around, holding the ball up to Manuel’s face) bordered on showing up his manager. I don’t blame him for being upset. I get that he’s a competitor. He just pushed it a bit too much for my liking.
BTW, we got break on that bad call at the plate. I forget who it was, but his foot was on the plate and Ruiz tagged him on the knee. He was clearly way safe. But, you take what you can get when you can get them, right?
Another update on Lidge. From Todd Zolecki:
Phillies physician Michael Ciccotti examined Lidge today in Philadelphia. He said Lidge did not need his third MRI examination since late April – Lidge had a MRI in late April and another about 10 days ago, Ruben Amaro Jr. estimated — although he gave him a cortisone shot. That is Lidge’s second cortisone shot since late April.
Ciccotti also said while Lidge has inflammation in the knee joint, there are no signs of structural damage. In fact, Ciccotti said the knee has improved since the last time he examined him.
Lidge is expected to begin a rehab process beginning tomorrow in New York.
OK, Lidge doesn’t need another MRI (good) but there is inflammation and he got another cortisone shot(bad). There are no signs of structural damage(good) and the knee actually has improved since his last examination(good) yet his pitching (bad). He’s beginning a rehab assignment today???????? (article is from last night)
Don’t know what to think about all that.
Looks like Ibanez has a lot of strong words for anyone accusing him of steroid use
Yeah, it’s too bad that anymore the first thing everyone thinks about when they see a guy’s performance take a jump is that he’s using performance enhancing drugs of some sort. I can’t say that the thought hasn’t crossed my mind, though, especially considering how much higher his numbers are over his career averages and taking his age into consideration. I mean, the guys we have seen do this at an advanced age have been helped by banned substances, you know?
BTW, Pete, I sent Raul an e-mail to straighten him out. You are only in your 20’s and you moved out of your mother’s basement and into the spare room on the second floor a while ago. Just thought that Raul should get the facts straight about the guy he’s going after is all. JUST KIDDING!!!!
ha. my parents actually have a nice basement. I could go for no mortgage payments for awhile.
Phillies made their 4-20th round picks today. took a couple of HS guys who will be tough to sign but are better than their 2-3 round picks (don’t ask me why the draft works this way)
speculation is that they are not going to spend a lot on the draft, and will focus on the international market, where they have already signed this guy.
Came across this today on dugoutcentral.com: Weighted Base Runners and the True Value of an RBI.
It’s a bit long, so here is the upshot: The guy who wrote it says that sabermetrics claims RBI to be a poor indicator of individual offensive value because it is a team context statistic. He disagrees. His intention is…… “to make a traditional baseball stat, meaning a simple formula that is easily calculated, to determine the actual value of an RBI and I believe I have done that. In closing, I love the sabermetric movement but have never understood how the RBI could be relegated to a virtual non-factor. I hope I have made strides towards bringing the RBI back to the mainstream.”
I found it interesting. How it pertains to us as Phillies fans is this:
“Last year, Ryan Howard led the majors (.176) for the second time in the last 3 years in RPR and was followed closely by AL leader Carlos Quentin (.174). People tend to assume that Howard gets his almost 150 RBI a year because of the lineup he hits in, but that’s not the reason. He gets them because he is one of the premier power hitters in baseball. Actually, last year was Howard’s second most productive of his 4-year career despite what many thought was a down year for him due to a low batting average and low on base percentage. In his 4 seasons his RPR has been .148 in his ‘05 rookie year, a major league leading .178 in ‘06, a top 10 .156 in ‘07 and last year’s league leading .176. My research has shown that this is a repeatable stat and that the homerun is what primes the pump.”
He has a chart of the RPR leaders for the 2008 season, with Howard at the top, and a chart of all-time (since 1956) RPR leaders, where Howard ranks 5th.
I know that we know Howard is a run producer. Just thought this was a sensible way to try and quantify it.
What the hell, Cole? 9 hits in 3 1/3 innings? Including 2 to Pelfrey? Let’s go buddy.
Charlie is killing me these last 2 days….. PAUL FREAKIN’ BAKO as a pinch hitter with bases loaded, 0 out? The man’s last MLB AB was 8 1/2 months ago! How can you expect him to do anything but strike out. Not that Rollins or Vic got anything done, but that was a waste of an out in a very important situation.
Sorry – I get particularly angry when we play the Mets…… like just now when JC Romero walked the dangerous Alex Cora to get to the sure-outs of Beltran, Sheffield and Wright.
maybe he pinch hit Bako as a message to Ruben Amaro to say “hey, it would have been nice to see John Mayberry up in that situation, not our 3rd catcher…”
I know I’m babbling to myself at this point but…
wow – that was huge…
Even if Madson pitches well Lidge will have to do a lot to lose the job with how stuborn Charlie is. The fans are another story… If Lidge comes back and isn’t any better one would have to think that he will lose the role eventually but not for a while. Madson can’t pitch well enough to win the job, Lidge would have to pitch poorly to lose the job.
Pete – What is your take on Bako? Why is he here? We could use a pitcher or an OF (especially one who can pinch hit) way more. When he first got called up I thought it was because the Phils were close to completing a trade and one of our catchers was involved. It was the only logical reason I could come up with. But it’s been too long for it to be that now.
…does Eric Bruntlett make that catch out in rightfield?
/sarcasm
Sorry I wasn’t home to watch the game last night, Pete. If I was, I would have been on here babbling with you.
We really dodged a lot of bullets and/or danced between a lot of raindrops and/or and any other cliche you’d prefer in getting that win last night.
I’m sure that by now you’ve read Charlie’s logic for pinch-hitting Bako instead of Stairs: “The moment I put up Stairs, they are going to go get the lefty,” Manuel said. “I’d bet my house.”
I’m sure that Charlie is correct, but it doesn’t make me agree with his decision. Faced with that choice, I’d much rather take my chances with Stairs against a leftie. Although if Charlie doesn’t use Bako here and there, it begs the question why he was brought up, doesn’t it?
I’m sure it’s nothing more than using the guys you have at your disposal. Still, I’d like to think that Charlie is using some sort of perverse logic where he will use Bako enough to show that we need someone better on the bench, hoping that will push Amaro to get someone, like Spilborghs, for him. I doubt it, but I’d still like to think it anyway.
I agree with bball that, at this point in time, Lidge won’t lose his job as the closer no matter how well Madson does in his stead. Amaro was quoted as saying that Lidge will not be Wally Pip and Charlie is very loyal, as bball said. Gotta figure that as long as Lidge is healthy he will be in the closer’s role and will be given every opportunity to keep it. He may lose it to Madson at some point later in the season if he continues to pitch poorly, but not now.
You’re on the money in bringing up Bruntlett, Stu. We do not have a 4th outfielder capable of making good defensive plays, let alone one of that caliber. It has hurt us and it will continue to hurt us as long as we do not. I hate to see us rolling the dice every time we want to give one of our outfielders a day off or we need to cover for a few days due to a minor injury(like Victorino’s recent one). Rather than addressing this need, however, we have Bako on the roster.
interesting tidbit on Ibanez from CNNSI about his current play…
Look: Through 55 games, Ibanez was hitting .329/.386/.676 with 19 homers.
OK, let’s start in 2002. That year, Ibanez had a 50-game streak — June 7 to Aug. 2 — when he hit .328/.385/.704 with 15 doubles, five triples, 15 homers. He drove in 54 runs. Few noticed because the Royals were abysmal that year, and it was in the middle of the season. But that stretch, you will note, is about as good as the stretch he’s on now. In some ways, it’s even better.
In 2003 he had a 55-game stretch where he hit .326/.360/.514 … not as good, but pretty damned good.
In 2004 he hit .365 over a 54-game stretch. In 2005 he got off to a dreadful start and then hit .330/.400/.524 over his next 55 games. In 2006 he hit 18 homers and drove in 57 runs in a 52-game stretch.
Over the last 52 games of the 2007 season Ibanez hit .363/.425/.652 with 15 homers.
Last year, for 55 games, July 12 to Sept. 14, he hit .374/.435/.648 with 17 doubles, two triples, 13 homers. And that, you might remember, was in Seattle and a lousy hitters’ ballpark.
This is a man who, when he gets hot, absolutely tears up pitchers. I’ve seen it up close. He has had a 50-to-60 game hot streak EVERY SINGLE YEAR since 2002. Now, true, this time around, his hot streak started with Game 1. And why not? He was in a new league, in a new ballpark, facing pitchers who had not seen him as much. He’s in more of a fastball/slider/change-up league, which is in his comfort zone (rather than curveballs and split-fingered fastballs which, generally, have eaten him up).
Point is: Raul Ibanez got hot, and this is how he hits when he’s hot. There’s nothing out of the ordinary here, nothing at all. Now, if he goes on to do this all year, if he goes on to hit 55 home runs, then yes, that would be out of the ordinary; that would be an outlier year like the years of Roger Maris, Davey Johnson, Andre Dawson, Luis Gonzalez, Brady Anderson and everyone else who had a wild and out-of-character year.
But for now, Raul Ibanez is just continuing what he’s done year after year. It’s just that people are noticing.”
Forgot to mention before……Sure looks like here we go again with Rollins. Every time he gets back into the leadoff spot the 0-fers start up again. I wonder if Charlie will ever get to the point where he finally accepts that having Rollins bat lower in the lineup, regardless of how he feels about it, is the right way to continue, rather than viewing it as just a short-term shakeup to try and get him right. I doubt it.
Good find on Ibanez, Pete.
bski, i am happy to see that you understood where I was going with the Bruntlett reference. I am a big fan of Spilborghs as a 4th OFer. He offers versatility as somebody that could actually start and be taken seriously if something were to happen to one of our starting OFers. We need an insurance policy for the OF. Why?
- Victorino has already been banged up this season
- Ibanez has played every game since the start of LAST season and is 37 years old. We are pushing our luck that he remains healthy and ready to go for what may be a long (crossing fingers) playoff run
- Werth has been slumping and could use a day off every now and then.
Who cares if Spilborghs is also right-handed? He is cheap and is used to not playing everyday. He would know his role and knows that Colorado has a ton of young talent so he is blocked as a 29 year old late bloomer. Spilborghs hasn’t gotten extensive playing time b/c of the logjam of young OF talent in Colorado and he is a great BUY LOW candidate (much like Jayson Werth a few seasons ago, sound familiar?), and adds speed and even somewhat of a power threat. He could bat 2nd or bat 6th.
We don’t need a starter, just somebody that is capable at the plate and can also play a good OF. Heck, some dude named Jeremy Reed made a fantastic play for the Mets last night. These guys add value. Bruntlett is a Quad-A player that really doesn’t do much besides draw a walk once in awhile.
And if we can get Jason Marquis as well, Colorado seems to make the most sense as a trading partner.
Check out Spilborgh’s projected stats if he played 162 games. Pretty much looks like Aaron Rowand’s numbers. Would love this production.

Yeah, Stu, Spilborghs would really fill a need (I hope we can get him cheaply) for all the reasons you mentioned and then some(like he can play all 3 OF positions).
Actually, I care that he is right-handed because the right-handed bat we currently have on the bench is Coste. I don’t have anything against the 33-year old rookie, mind you. It’s just that using Coste in that role necessitates that Bako remain up with us, which means we are carrying two backup catchers. This redundancy comes at the expense of leaving ourselves short a viable 4th outfielder. Not a good trade-off, IMO.
LOTS of interesting stuff in Jayson Stark’s rumblings today (I love this guy)…. I’ll shorten the points here…. it’s really a full post worthy, but I don’t have time tonight, so please share your thoughts here..
- We are interested in Spilbourghs, nothing is imminant, Red Sox and Tigers are interested as well
- We are going to probably go after a big time pitcher before we settle for someone like Marquis
- In trading for Eric Bedard, we have two people in the front office who were in BAL and SEA with him, Ibanez knows him and 3rd base coach Sam Perlazzo coached him in BAL.“Knowing what he knows,” one longtime buddy of Perlozzo said, “I’m sure Sammy is telling them not to make that deal. … I just don’t see Erik Bedard blending into that clubhouse.” That’s very telling to me, and what I’ve been saying about Bedard all along.
- We are telling teams that Happ, Bastardo, Drabek, Dom Brown and Jason Knapp are not available. Jason Donald and Carrasco will be hard to pry, and Michael Taylor and Lou Marson and the likeliest prospects to be traded in a big deal. I would rather keep Taylor and trade Carrasco or Donald, personally.
Thanks for the info, Pete.
I’ve been snooping around while I’m waiting for tonight’s game and I came across this about our draft picks on day 3 (one of whom is Amaro’s nephew, btw), and this about Pablo Ozuna being suspended for 50 games, effective immediately, due to a performance enhancing substance violation.
I forgot to ask earlier, was there some sort of confrontation between Utley and Pelfrey in the 6th inning last night? I saw a mention about it somewhere today. It was actually given as a possible reason why we finally got to Pelfrey, and got him out of the game, in the 7th inning.
bski,
Pelfrey got pissed when Utley called time and stepped away from the plate before one of the pitches in the at-bat. That much I know happened but the fact Pelfrey got so angry about something that insignificant makes me think something else might have happened in addition to that or there might be something in the past between the two we don’t know about.
Bski
It was pretty neat to see actually. As the inning changed Pelfrey started barking at Utley as he ran by him. Utley just kept his head down and trotted in to the dugout. As competitive as Utley is I love the class he shows and how he plays the game. It was so satisfying to have him hit the game winner and let his game do the talking.
I agree Pete lets keep Taylor and Brown if at all possible.
Thanks for filling me in guys. I’m watching tonight’s game on SNY and I was able to catch some of the pregame show. They showed video of what happened and they also had brief taped interviews with both Utley and Pelfrey about what happened.
As far as tonight’s game, I’ve had more than enough of the Castillo-Cora-Beltran show. It’s the same thing over and over and over leading to single runs for the Mets in the 1st, 3rd, and 5th.
Meanwhile, Kevin Youkilis, I mean Tim Redding, is taking care of our vaunted left-handed lineup with relative ease. It’s maddening that pretty much any sinkerball pitcher, no matter how mediocre, can shut us down.
Geez, Howard and Ibanez have had nothing but miserable at-bats tonight, haven’t they?
At least we got one back in the 6th, but Redding’s pitch count is pretty low so he’s not going anywhere soon unless we knock him out of the game.
Rauuuuuuuuuuul!!!!
Dang, I wasn’t expecting him to have a shot like that off a lefty after the night he had been having at the plate….
Me either, jurnee.
Same story tonight. The Mets jump out to a lead. We keep staying after them, catch them, then overtake them for the win. The SNY broadcast team threw out a stat during the game. Over the last 42 games the Phils and Mets have played, they are split at 21 wins and 21 losses. Of the Phils 21 wins, the Mets have held the lead in 15 of them. (Add in tonight’s game and you’ve got 22 wins for the Phils with the Mets leading in 16 of them).
I can’t complain. We took 2 out of 3 in NY. We picked up a game on the Mets. We went 7-3 on the road trip. Even though we should have gone 9-1 and could have gone 10-0, I’ll take it. Like I said before, we went 8-2 on our previous 10-game road trip, which adds up to a combined record of 15-5. That’s pretty good, no? Start playing this way at home too and we’ll run away with the division.
missed the whole game tonight – was checking on my iphone. went crazy when I saw the Ibanez HR. great to see Moyer giving us another solid effort too. Maybe he’s figured it out.
What more can you say about this team? Well, let’s see how they fare against the AL. Let’s Sock Those Red Sox!

Pete, we need a new post so we can properly make fun of Boston.
working on it sporadically throughout the day – should be up by 5.
