Phillies Rumors: Kendrick and Marson being shopped?

by Pete

Just a real quick update here…

  • With Kyle Kendrick being sent down to the minors, rumors are out there that he is being shopped for a RH bat off the bench, namely Jeff Baker of the Rockies. I have been of the opinion for well over a year now that Kendrick will never be even an average MLB pitcher. I would trade him for anything that would help the team.
  • On a more interesting note, Todd Zolecki is reporting that the Phillies have had talks with the Red Sox, who are desperate for a young catcher, regarding Lou Marson. The Phils asked for one of the Sox 2 top pitching prospects (Clay Buchholz and Daniel Bard) in return and that was the end of that. With the depth at catcher in our system, I would be OK with a move like that if it got us a top-notch pitching prospect. However, I would be disappointed that my Lou Marson signed bat and ball would never become Phillies collectors items. One thing I do like is that the Red Sox like Marson, and I believe them to be a top-5 organization in terms of talent evaluation.

Jeff Baker never seems to get a fair shake out there in Colorado, and they have a logjam of young talent trying to get on the field (Baker, Stewart, Barmes, Seth Smith, Spilborghs, Gonzalez, etc).

I think a trade straight up for him would be tilted in favor of the Phils.  Baker has been touted as a huge prospect and is major league ready.

Here’s a couple more trade rumors from foxsports.com:

The Marlins continue to evaluate available catchers. The latest they may be mulling is Ronny Paulino. The Phillies were expected to deal Chris Coste at some point after acquiring Paulino from the Pirates in December. According to media reports, they instead have decided to keep Coste as their backup and are making Paulino available. The Marlins and White Sox are among the teams the Phillies have contacted to gauge interest, an industry source said. During the Winter Meetings, the Marlins and Pirates spoke about Paulino but could not consummate a trade. – South Florida Sun-Sentinel

AND:

It figures to be easier for the Phillies to trade Matt Stairs, who is making only $1 million this season. But they would prefer to move Geoff Jenkins and reportedly are willing to pay most of the $8 million remaining on his contract ($6.75 million in 2009, $1.25 million buyout for 2010). Ben’s Take: Jenkins was at his best on bad Brewers teams. – Cherry Hill Courier-Post

Jenkins is just a bad contract we are going to have to deal with…
