Once upon a time, the Phillies acquired a left handed pitcher named Cliff Lee. To this point, they gave up very little, if anything at all. None of the 4 prospects they gave up appear to be star bound in the bigs, appear, of course, being th operative word.

Lee anchored a pitching staff to a 2nd straight WS appearance, and a list of multiple teams that the Phils passed in the night wondered why they didn't get Lee for such a cheap price.

Now, I sit here wondering if the shoe is about to be placed on the other foot. First, I read Buster Olney reporting that Roy Halladay's list of preferred teams include the Yankees, Red Sox, Angels and Phillies. That's the order reported, and I can only assume of preference. But it sho nuff beats being alligned with the Twins and Rangers whom he nixed previously. Then, I see John Heyman twitting this....

<<ive heard halladay-shopping jays like jesus montero of #yanks (plus hughes/joba?) and casey kelly of #redsox (plus buchholz?)
If the Blue Jays asking price for Roy Halladay is Jesus Montero and either Phil Hughes or Joba Chamberlain I think the Yankees need to make this deal. >>

It's never been easy being the trigger person in a GM's chair, let alone nowadays with salaries north of many countries GDP. But I can say this. I'd hate to see the Phils not included in the Halladay considerations when competitors are applying non World Championship possibilities to the next couple years when we could be right there, and wondering why we didn't get it done. Pitching, piching, pitching.

Todd Zolecki reports that Moyer is having more problems:

Jamie Moyer has been hospitalized at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital because of recurring symptoms from his groin surgery in October.

Phillies physician Michael Ciccotti said this evening that Moyer "is in no way seriously ill."

"He's very comfortable," Ciccotti said. "He's quite fine. He's walking. He's eating. He's completely comfortable and fine. We're just taking appropriate precautions, and also wanting to do what we can to make sure he's on track for Spring Training."

Ciccotti said Moyer started to feel an increase in pain over the weekend, which prompted him to fly to Philadelphia on Tuesday to visit Hahnemann University Hospital, where Bill Meyers performed the surgery Oct. 2.

Moyer stayed the night at Thomas Jefferson, where he is expected to remain, possibly through the weekend for continued evaluation.

"We're in the midst of evaluting him and treating him for this increase in pain," Ciccotti said. "He's getting some tests, an MRI. He's continuing to exercise as his comfort allows. That's really where we're at right now."

Ciccotti said Moyer's current symptoms don't seem to be related to last month's blood infection, but he hasn't ruled it out. Moyer has had blood tests as part of his evaulation.

"You can restrain that area during the recovery or rehabilitation period," Ciccotti said. "That's where the MRI is helpful because it can help us determine if that's the case and then that's just a matter of adjusting his rehab and his therapy."

Ciccotti said Moyer's rehab following surgery had gone "very well," and despite his setbacks, he said Moyer still could be ready to participate at the beginning of Spring Training in mid-February.

"The recovery from this surgery is such that normally it's three months or so," he said. "He had it in early October. Really, he would be recovered from this surgery sometime in January, well before Spring Training. So having been in the hopsital, and now a few more days in the hospital, that may delay his full recovery, but he's still on a timeline that would allow him to participate in Spring Training.

"It's possible it could be a little bit later than [mid-February], but he's still on the timeline that would allow him to participate in Spring Training with hopefully minimal effects on his early Spring Training participation."

I hate to see anyone get injured and I know this will sound cruel, but, if last season wasn't, this is a clear sign that it's time to part ways with Moyer (at least in this case Moyer has already had a very long career).

Maybe he will continue to have problems that will leave him no choice but to hang them up. Whatever the case, the Phils really need to buy him out because there is no way they can count on him to give them anything.

Interesting move by the Phils today. The acquisition of DeWayne Wise via minor league contract might signal the end of Matt Stairs as a Phil. Stairs will long be remembered for a timely shot deep in the California night, Wise is well known for a single play also, making that spectacular grab to salvage Mark Buherle's perfecto last year. Honestly, I cannot envision how they plan to use him, ranging from 5th outfielder to providing minor league depth. But he sure can run them down.

The name Brandon Lyon came up as a relief candidate recently. One thing I found interesting about his possibilities was closing experience, and an expressed flexibility on his role, and since I have a hard time envisioning top flight closers coming because of roles filled here (Lidge, Madson), that part of him looked positive. Based on this quote I ran acoss tonight, he probably wants a 3 year deal and I'm not sure the Phils want to do that time frame with a less than stellar, but decent reliever. Just a guess on my part.

“The main thing for me going into this after last year, and playing for two teams in two years, is a long-term deal,” Lyon recently told Booth Newspapers. “That’s more important to me this year. The shuffle is tougher and I want to dedicate myself to one team and one city, and have that peace of mind.”

<<If this bargain-basement deal isn’t much of an upgrade over The Beard>>

I won't swear to this anonymous opinion below, but I'm getting the impression this view has some degree of widespread support. What I find interesting is that Castro would sign here for maybe more, but not a lot of extra money (assumed) when the playing time is limited. People think Charlie doesn't use his bench, and assume (at least I do) that it's because of a weak bench (leastwise Bruntlett). Jayson Stark recently said (Paraphrasing), "People in the front office wonder how much they should throw into the bench since Charlie doesn't use it anyway.

Here's a scouting report from a Major League scout who knows Castro well:
"He's a defensive-oriented utility guy with tremendous hands. His range might not be what it once was, but he's automatic on anything he gets to. He's also a tremendous individual and quality person to have in the clubhouse. This is a good deal for the Phillies."

Happiest of Thanksgivings to one and all.

according to Conlin, Felix won't be back either>>

Pedro should feel something along the line of disowned. Course we only know the surface, but any player with pride and self confidence should feel slighted by the Phils passing on a reasonable salary.

But....

There is such a long long way to go before spring training, and free agents fall into place. If the market is found to be unexciting to Feliz, and the Phils, Pedro may well let any bitterness go. I doubt he's married to his current state of thinking.

That's not an endorsement of resigning him, or his getting excited about it. It's a comment on the length of this process.

If this bargain-basement deal isn't much of an upgrade over The Beard, should we assume the Phils are saving their moolah to splurge on a quality 3rd baseman and/or pitcher?
