Scouting Report
We all got to see Bastardo up close this past year as he made a couple starts, a couple relief appearances and even made the post-season roster.
His fastball is about 91-92, but can reach 95mph. It seems faster to the hitters because of his deceptive delivery. He throws a slider and a change-up, but they looked similar to me, and I’m not sure FanGraphs could figure it out either, as they have his Slider (82mph) slower than his Change-up (84mph). He showed very little of the control he had in the minors in 2009, and his control issues are his only hurdle to being in the big leagues full time.
I see Bastardo as a J.C. Romero-type relief pitcher. It is clear from his ridiculous minor league numbers that he has the stuff to get hitters out. If he can locate his breaking pitches, he could be a dominant relief pitcher. I think his ceiling is a set-up role with and ERA is the low 2′s, and a high K/9 rate. To reach this ceiling, he has a lot of work to do on located all 3 of his pitches. I don’t see him as a starter because of his injury history and because you can get by as a reliever with 2 plus pitches, and I’m don’t think he’s going to be able to reign in all 3.
Path to the Majors
Bastardo should be on the 2009 Opening Day roster. If he’s not, it better be because he’s injured, because we need to see what we have in him. My hope is that Charlie gets him into a lot of games, a lot of 6-7th inning duty and by the end of the year, he’s a solid back-up option if Baez, Madson or Lidge go down. I’m hopeful that a handful of our bullpen prospects (Bastardo, Scott Mathieson, BJ Rosenberg, Michael Scwimmer, Austin Hyatt and possibly Phillippe Aumont) come on in the next couple years so that we can use money elsewhere in 2012 and beyond.

i just cant wait til spring training starts, so i can get the disgusting image of the eagles getting dominated by the cowboys out of my head. i can not stress enough about how the eagles played. it is so frustrating to watch the eagles throw on every play when we have 3 good running backs (includinig weaver). for once i wish it was run first then pass. ahhh god, wtf!!!
i just needed to get that off my chest. it is so frustrating.
bastardo to me doesnt have good enough control and hes just basically a one pitch pitcher. his offspeed and breaking ball isnt good at all. i am however very interested in Mathieson.
damnit eagles……….
