Phillies Top 20 Seasons: 5 Hitters that Missed

Yesterday I explained the criteria for my top-20 individual Phillies seasons and showed the 5 pitching seasons that just missed.

Here are the 5 hitting seasons that just missed the cut, sorted chronologically. Several recent seasons that couldn’t make the cut here.

Del Ennis.  Slugger from Olney High School in western Northeast Philadelphia.  Fans heaped abuse on him, I was told.  Some things never change.  Mama, don’t 
let your babies grow up to be Phillies leftfielders.

Does this mean that Whitey doesn’t make the list, or that this season of his didn’t make it?

Jeff -

It means he didn’t make the list. Had a great career, but I can’t say I saw a standout season. Wasn’t in the league leaders a whole lot.

Excuse me?  Ashburn won two batting titles with seasons far better than the one you cite. (1955 & 1958)
