Today, I’m going to show the 5 pitching seasons that were under consideration, but didn’t make it onto the list.
I’ll put up the 5 hitting seasons that just missed tomorrow. These seasons are shown in chronological order.

I’m guessing no pitchers between 1996 and 2007 will make the cut. Not even Robert Person’s 2001 season.
stu-
you don’t think Schilling should be on the list?
also – can someone who was not 4 years old in 1987 tell me why Steve Bedrosian won the Cy Young? Take out the saves, and that’s pretty much Chad Durbin in 2008. I considered him because so few Phillies have won the Cy Young, but I couldn’t justify putting him on the list. Was “awesome beard” a heavily weighted attribute in 1987?
a couple notes…
On McQuillan…
- only 6 players in MLB history have pitched over 350 innings in a season with a sub-1.60 ERA. Walter Johnson, Ed Walsh, Christy Mathewson, Pete Alexander, Jack Coombs and McQuillan.
- Was on 23 during this season.
On Davis…
- Was a 30 year old rookie for that season…is 36th all time for most wins after turning 30 (158)
On Hamels…
- youngest Phillies pitcher since Robin Roberts to pitch 220 IP with a sub 3.10 ERA.
This should be fun. Looking forward to the discussions.
Well, Schilling was an anomoly, he might have made the cut. We’ll see what you come up with as his best season(s) and if they make the list. He is likely HOFer so it is probable he is on here somewhere even though I’d take his DBack career over his Phillies stats.
I was more thinking the garbage of the late 90s/2000s including Joe Roa, Chad Ogea, Duckworth, Coggin, Pat Beech, Padilla, Figuroa, etc
Pete, Haven’t looked at his stats but Bedrosian was Lidge-like that year in effect and stature for an average club. Think he notched 40 saves. No exemplar years from others in league, lacked stiff competition. ‘87 Phillies, the year that time forgot.
