Recliner GM NLCS Game 4 Live-Blog

Alright, here we are at a pivotal Game 4. I’ll be live-blogging my thoughts throughout the game. Feel free to keep the conversation going in the comments. Make sure to refresh the page so you can see any new comments.

8:16pm: Haven’t been this nervous about a game in awhile, but I can probably say that for every game from here on out. What is so frustrating to fans about these games, is that we have no control over them. We try to pretend we do by wearing the same jersey we wore when they won, or sitting in the same seat, or watching on the same TV. But in reality, as much as we want this win, we can’t do anything about it.

8:23pm: Sarge just gave the most boring introductions of all time. Thanks, Sarge. Only slightly better than a coked-out Dannie DeVito yesterday.

8:24pm: Wow, Juan Pierre gets the start. Not looking forward to that.

8:24pm: Base hit Rollins! I was just about to type how much he missed that first pitch by, but Lowe left that up. Hopefully he’s tired and keeps doing that.

8:26pm: Did you guys know that Joe Torre used to manage the Yankees and the Derek Lowe used to pitch for the Red Sox?? They haven’t mentioned that once this series.

8:28pm: Hit and run that worked! We hardly ever did that with any success this year. 1st and 3rd, no out. We HAVE to have a big inning here.

8:30pm: Utley! Terrible 0-2 pitch by Lowe when he desperately needed a strike-out. The Phillies are winning, Buck and McCarver are devastated

8:31pm: The shift actually helped there with DeWitt fielding the ball in right field making it easy for Werth to score.

8:32pm: Burrell just missed a pitch to hit there. Just need a fly ball Patty.

8:33pm: Great AB by Burrell to get on. I thought he swung, but he was convincing enough in running straight to first to fool the first base ump. Too bad Fox doesn’t have a camera that shows us any good angles. It’s almost like they forgot they had the NLCS on.

8:35pm: Man it would be sweet for Victorino to get a hit here.

8:35pm: Damn. Double play. Needed another run there, but we can’t complain with 2-0.

8:36pm: Never buy a Sprint Instinct. They should be punished for producing that commercial. It has earned lifetime “mute” status along with every McDonald’s commercial.

8:37pm: This first inning is key for Blanton. Our starters have struggled in the first inning and we need to hold this lead.

8:40pm: Are you kidding me Furcal?

8:41pm: My advice? Walk Manny here.

8:42pm: Charlie is reading the blog. Thanks for coming out Charlie. By the way, Joe and Tim disagree with this move.

8:43pm: Nice AB Martin. Go destroy some more stuff in the dugout tough guy.

8:44pm: Horrible 0-2 pitch. 2-1. Right down the middle of the plate. Absolutely horrible.

8:46pm: DeWitt is up again in a similar situation to yesterday. He gets out, we avoid a big inning, he gets a hit, the momentum shifts big time.

8:47pm: My heart just stopped. DeWitt hits it right at Howard and we avoid disaster. Still, can a pitcher of ours not named Hamels get out of a first inning without any trouble? 9 more innings of this?

8:48pm: We need to make Lowe work this inning. He’s frustrated and we can’t let him get into a groove of any kind.

8:50pm: My girlfriend has just informed me that I am “bright red” and need to “cool down.”

8:51pm: Not a bad pitch by Lowe, but a great piece of hitting by Dobbs. Low and inside breaking ball and he pulled it right down the line. Let’s get him in.

8:55pm: Don’t really understand why Blanton isn’t bunting here. He’s no Hamels or Myers at the plate.

8:57pm: 3-1 count and Jimmy swings at something that almost bounced into Martin’s glove. You need to zone in on a fastball in those kinds of counts. They start teaching this in JV baseball.

9:02pm: The Dodgers have done A LOT of complaining about balls and strikes in this series.

9:02pm: Do any of our readers live in Cali and could maybe tell me why their state is constantly on fire? That’s a serious question. It seems to me that you could treat the trees with something that would prevent this. Too many trees?

9:03pm: I think that Joe Torre put Juan Pierre in the same line-up as Rafael Furcal just to make me crazy. Why not trade for Jose Reyes and just put me in a straight jacket.

9:04pm: Tim McCarver just informed us that Larry Bowa is stealing signs from 3rd base. Thanks, Tim.

9:05pm: Hit and run with Derek Lowe? Seriously?

9:10pm: You forget sometimes that Chase Utley is already 29. How many more years does he have left in his prime? Hopefully it’s closer to 6-7 than 3-4.

9:12pm: Now would be a good time for Ryan Howard to realize that this is the playoffs and need to hit more like Manny Ramirez than Joe Blanton. 2-run HR, please.

9:14pm: Atleast he didn’t strike out. Now he’s hitting .143 in the playoffs. He’s GOT to get a big hit today or tomorrow. He absolutely has to.

9:17pm: Just realized that Monday Night Football is on as well. Went to flip over and check the score and was immediately greeted by a Brandon Jacobs touchdown. That can’t be a good sign.

9:19pm: Blanton is not going anywhere NEAR Ramirez in these first 3 pitches. Then a good breaking ball and fastball and what might have been a strike out if anyone but Ramirez was up.

9:24pm: HUGE batter here. 1st and 3rd with 2 out. If he gets out of this, that’s a run through the heart of the order without any damage. Of course, DeWitt is up again.

9:25pm: Big out for Blanton, even if Burrell and Rollins made it interesting. My girlfriend yelled “talk!” I’m so proud of her

9:28pm: Awwww…the mud on the baseball isn’t right. Shut up Lowe.

9:29pm: I want to run a mud farm.

9:31pm: We are hitting a lot more balls in the air against Lowe today than in Game 1. This tells me that he doesn’t have his good stuff. Yet, we only have 2 runs. Got to pad this lead a little bit.

9:32pm: Good job by Cooch to get the line-up over. Hilarious job by Blanton swinging at three balls closer to Charlie Manuel than home plate.

9:34pm: Got to give Ruiz credit. He’s played great this post-season. Most fans are hoping that Lou Marson can win the starting job next year, but I’m not sure the job will even be up for grabs, despite Ruiz’s regular season shortcomings.

9:41pm: Fact Check – Is Joe Blanton wild? Answer: Despite the fact that McCarver keeps saying this, Blanton was 38th in the MLB in walks.

9:47pm: Werth swings at ball 4 after Rollins grounds out weakly on the first pitch. Really bad start to an inning that the Phillies needed to put one on the board with the top of the order coming up for both them and the Dodgers.

9:49pm: Chase is called out on a ball 1-2 feet outside. Ump got caught up in the towel waving.

9:50pm: Checking back in on Monday Night Football, Browns up 17-7. Would certainly be nice if everyone else in our division lost this weekend.

9:54pm: DO NOT walk Furcal.

9:55pm: Damnit. Prediction: Furcal will score.

9:55pm: It really doesn’t feel like we are winning this game right now.

9:58pm: Ugh, two on, zero out, Manny up. I think I should go take a walk or something, this might not be pretty.

9:58pm: Guess what? Furcal scored and Manny got an RBI. Let me ask you this Phillies fans. Do you feel the same way about Ryan Howard as Dodgers fans feel about Manny? If you want $150 million, then you deliver like Ramirez has, end of story

10:00pm: It will be a miracle if we end this inning with the game tied. Lead off walks. Lead off walks. Lead off walks.

10:01pm: 3-2 Dodgers. Lead off walks.

10:02pm: The Phillies came to bat with the top of their line-up and went 1-2-3. The Dodgers came to bat with the top of their line-up and went for 2 runs and counting. The difference in the game so far.

10:04pm: Huge double-play. Can anyone of the Phillies come up with a big hit today?

10:06pm: Kershaw in for Lowe. He has FILTHY stuff, but can he keep his composure?

10:09pm: The Dodger crowd absolutely cannot believe that a ball 2 feet inside was not called a strike.

10:10pm: Lead off walk…heard that before? Let’s see if we can do anything with it.

10:10pm: Clayton Kershaw looks like a werewolf.

10:10pm: The crowd is antsy, hopefully it gets to young Clayton.

10:11pm: YES! Single for Burrell. 2 on, 0 out. Same situation that got the Dodgers 2 runs.

10:12pm: Once again would be great for Victorino to get a hit here. He’s been pressing since the incident in Game 3.

10:13pm: I disagree with the decision to bunt here with the left handed Dobbs on deck. Should have let Victorino swing away. Now Dobbs has to get a fly ball against a really tough lefty.

10:13pm: Manuel goes to Feliz. Torre goes to Chan Ho Park. In my opinion, this is horrible set of decisions by Manuel. You have Kershaw in, who has walked the first batter and given up a hit and appears to be rattled. You then give him a free out by bunting and now, you essentially take him out of the game AND one of your best hitters today in Dobbs by putting Feliz in. Should have let Victorino bat and seen if Kershaw completely broke down instead of relying on Feliz to come up with a big hit. I’m mad right now.

10:18pm: Great job by Feliz and Manuel. Only needed a groundball or a fly ball to tie the game. I’m absolutely livid right now.

10:19pm: Phillies get a gift run on a wild pitch. Tie game, and I’m still ticked.

10:20pm: When did Chan Ho Park ever throw 95mph? Texas Rangers fans are cringing right now.

10:21pm: Blanton is out, not sure why he was even on the on-deck circle. Manuel brings out Jenkins. Another terrible decision. Jenkins has gotten exactly 0 clutch hits this year. Coste? Stairs? Myers? Anyone but Jenkins. Not to mention you knew they would bring out Beimel to pitch to him. Manuel is completely blowing this inning.

10:25pm: Oh, it’s Taguchi? He made the postseason roster? Good for him. Way to take a couple pitches bud. 1 pitch, 1 out.

10:26pm: Big shutdown inning for the bullpen coming up, followed by our top of the line-up coming through in the clutch. C’mon guys.

10:29pm: By shutdown, I of course meant, give up a HR to Casey Blake. ON A 1-2 PITCH. Baseball is easy guys. Don’t walk lead off men and don’t give players pitches to hit in pitchers counts.

10:31pm: I’m changing the channel. I can’t watch this.

10:40pm: Just turned back, now 5-3. This is the type of game that during the regular season I would just stop watching, go read or watch something else, occassionally checking back on the game to see if the offense is making a comeback. I do this for my own sanity and personal well-being. In the playoffs, you can’t really do this. You have to watch every pitch, and it can be excruciating.

10:50pm: What a play by Utley. Absolutely fantastic effort. Maybe that will fire up the offense a little bit.

10:53pm: We need Rollins ON BASE.

10:54pm: By on base, I clearly meant to swing at 2 straight balls WAY out of the strike zone.

10:55pm: I’m sorry Jayson Werth, how many fastballs do you need right down the middle before you make contact?

10:57pm: Good inning guys, Rollins swings at 2 terrible pitches and then Werth and Utley strike out on 6 pitches.

11:03pm: Yes Dodgers, fans, Madson is trying to hit Loney with us down 2 in the 7th. How about you show up for a frickin’ game on time before you start pretending you are real baseball fans.

11:07pm: If Kemp gets a hit here, I will strongly consider going to bed. But I won’t.

11:08pm: Got to get a run this inning, I don’t think we can get 2 off of Broxton with the bottom of our line-up.

11:10pm: Neither Dannie nor I follow the Flyers, but it looks like they are off to a bad start. 0-2. There’s a Sarah Palin joke in there somewhere. I’m not going near it.

11:11pm: Broxton is getting loose? Starters going on 3 days rest and closers pitching more than 1 inning? Phillies fans no nothing of these things.

11:12pm: Good job by Howard to get on. No big hits today, but no horrible ABs either. Apparentely I missed an error by him while I was taking a mental health break. Good thing. I probably would have thrown my computer through a window.

11:14pm: Burrell has gotten 2 of the biggest hits for the Phillies this post-season, can he get a third?

11:17pm: SHANE VICTORINO!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHERE’S YOUR PITCH TO THE HEAD NOW?????? WHERE IS IT???? GO WRITE A SCREENPLAY IN YOU STUDIO APARTMENTS YOU FAKE BASEBALL FANS!!

11:20pm: That HR just made the decision for me. We are on to Beer #5.

11:22pm: Matt Stairs just needs to make solid contact with a fastball and let the 100mph gas do the work.

11:23pm: I like that Broxton is in and will have to work this inning, then rest, then come out again.

11:26pm: MATT STAIRS!!! ARE YOU KIDDING??? HE DESTROYED THAT BALL! DE-FRICKIN-STROYED IT. I THINK IT WENT RIGHT THROUGH SOMEONES CAFE LATTE IN RIGHT FIELD!!!!

11:27pm: My dad just called saying he didn’t even know who this guys was. I said we got him late in the season and he replied “god bless Pat Gillick.” Amen.

11:27pm: Who comes in in the 8th? Romero?

11:29pm: Broxton has lost it a little bit. Can we pile it on?

11:29pm: McCarver is legitimately upset that the Dodgers are losing. “Just shocking”, he says solemnly.

11:33pm: During that inning, I ran and woke up my terrified girlfriend and after screaming and sitting back down, one of my cats came up onto my lap and smelled my face a great deal to make sure I was the same person. She has NEVER come up on my lap without me picking her up before. OK, I’m losing credibility here, but to summarize, things are getting weird over here.

11:35pm: NO WALKS, Romero.

11:36pm: YOU ARE KILLING ME. YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY KILLING ME.

11:38pm: Wow. Double play. God bless you baseball gods, god bless you.

11:38pm: Don’t bring Lidge in, we don’t need him right now. Don’t change what has worked all year. Ramirez can’t tie the game.

11:40pm: Browns won, good week for the Birds. Also, the Browns should ABSOLUTELY go to the Alabama-style helmets with the numbers on them.

11:41pm: What bet did Ryan Howard lose to have to do this Subway poem commercial?

11:42pm: Lidge vs. Ramirez. I hope all baseball fans are awake to watch this.

11:43pm: How did Ramirez not swing at that 1-2 pitch?

11:44pm: 3-2 count. Throw a strike here Brad.

11:44pm: Didn’t walk him, but gave up a double. No HR here, no HR.

11:46pm: 0-2 to Martin. Make a good pitch here. He hasn’t shown he can hit your slider.

11:46pm: NO, NO, NO, NO! We can’t have this again. You HAVE to block that ball Ruiz. You HAVE to block it

11:47pm: Will suspend live-blog so I can pace.

11:51pm: Wow. Lidge hasn’t made it easy. But he’s made it work. 3 outs left.

11:51pm: I just took my heartrate. 160 beats per minute. I’m usually at 70. That tell you how nervous I am?

11:54pm: Can we get a insurance run here? Not sure how Lidge will react already throwing 15 pitches.

11:55pm: Beautiful swing by Utley. I will never get sick of that. Will this be where Howard gets his hit?

11:57pm: Is anyone better at the take-out slide than Chase Utley?

12:00am: I can’t believe Broxton is still pitching Victorino inside. He clearly didn’t learn.

12:01am: Pitch-out ends the inning. Can Lidge make this painless?

12:03am: Gonna need to pace for the 9th. It’s not like you guys need me to tell you what’s going on anyway.

12:03am-12:09am: Pacing

12:10am: I’m speechless. I’m absolutely speechless. We never win these kinds of games. NEVER. This is one of the greatest games in Philadelphia baseball history. A game that we will always remember. Victorino has made himself a legend, Matt Stairs, of all people, has made himself a legend. You can tell by the tone this live-blog took, that I was fully preparing myself for a crushing loss. Another Philly team biting the dust. I honestly didn’t think this was possible. But it was. Wow. Wow. Wow.

12:15am: One win away from the World Series. Can Cole Hamels be our Orel Hershiser on Wednesday? We’ll find out.

12:16am: Just turned on SportsCenter. They showed Matt Stairs HR, and all Scott Van Pelt did was laugh. I’ll never be able to see that enough.

12:17am: Not sleeping tonight. And I couldn’t be happier.

  1. bstring says:

Watching the game without the sound tonight. Could not take any more McCarver.

  2. Dannie says:

Jimmy needs to stop bailing on those fastballs with 2 strikes that start in and end up running over the plate.  I bet if you go back and look at his called 3 strike outs a large majority of them will be on that pitch were Jimmy is just frozen.

It’s surprising to me since most if not all of his power is to right field, that is the pitch to turn on and use the power he has.

  3. Dannie says:

Pete I don’t like the substitution for Dobbs here.  Why don’t we make Kershew get someone out here even if it’s lefty vs. lefty?  See if he buckles under the pressure.

  4. Dannie says:

We now have a clear management blunder on the part of Charlie Manuel.

  5. Dannie says:

Yesssssssssssss.  These commentators if freakin’ idiots.  He slide his hand over the entire plate.

  6. Pete says:

    Haha -

Hey Dannie, thanks for making me not feel all alone here. I’m sure people are out and doing things. We’ll get some talk tomorrow.
  7. Dannie says:

I can’t imagine Taguchi was a better option on the bench right?

  8. Dannie says:

That was a horribly managed inning even for the casual baseball fan like me to notice.

  9. klkatz says:

is Pat Sajak there again tonight? Chad Durbin made the bases look liike the wheel of fortune?

  10. bski says:

Pete...You’re not alone.  I’m just too busy being excruciated (if that’s a word).  I’ve been ticked for most of the night.  I’ve been screaming at the tv and constantly grumbling and muttering.  I just haven’t felt like talking up until now.  I would love to watch something else, but I can’t.  It’s like a big fire or a train wreck, no matter how horrific it is you just can’t look away.  Anyway, you’re comments are on the money.

Great play by Utley.  We still have a shot, even though I’m not exactly confident.

Screw Randy Newman….”We Love LA”, please.

  11. klkatz says:

the baseball gods love the great defensive play followed by coming to the plate in the next 1/2 inning.. fingers crossed they didn’t use all their powers with the rays tonight.

  12. klkatz says:

    silver lining:
we still have home field advantage.
    the game’s not over.
    eagles won.
cowboys, skins lost. giants are losing.

  13. bski says:

Jayson Werth’s at bats really look very similar to those of Pat Burrell from a few years ago.  He is going to have to become a more disciplined hitter for him to play every day.

  14. klkatz says:

why is howard such a bone head calling ruiz off that ball.

  15. Dannie says:

Kevin – That was a selfish, selfish play by Howard.  He called Ruiz off for no other reason than to redeem himself for screwing up earlier.  That was in no way an easier play for him the worst fielding first baseman in baseball to take.    Only a homerun will redeem Howard for tonight in my eyes.

  16. bski says:

I thought we were in for another “throw” from Howard.  You missed the first one when you switched away earlier, Pete.  It really was one of his finer efforts.  Utley came 15 feet off of first and he still couldn’t reach it.  It went off the tip of his glove.

I’ll say again, if for no other reason than personal pride, Howard needs to take about 500 ground balls and make 500 throws a day, every day for the entire off season.  I mean, even if he doesn’t care how much he’s hurting the team (which I’m sure he does), he’s got to care that he looks like an 8-year old pony league player throwing the ball all over the diamond.

  17. Pete says:

would it still be 5-3 if howard hasn’t made that error? or did the double-play negate it?

  18. Dannie says:

    YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
    SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
    SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
    SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
    SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
    SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
    SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
    SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

  19. bski says:

HOLY SHANE!  WE HAVE NEW LIFE!

  20. klkatz says:

i sure hope Pete didn’t go to bed – Victorino comes up huge and makes Manuel look like a genius.

  21. bball says:

WOW!!  I was about to give up and go to bed.  DID NOT expect that!!  SHAANNNEEEE!

  22. bski says:

Pete…Howard’s error was a biggie and allowed the 5th run to score.  Pierre was on second and Kemp was on first.  If Howard made the play, LA would have had 2nd and 3rd with 1 out.  Ethier lined out and then Martin lined out.  That would have been the end of the inning and LA would have only gotten 1 run on Blake’s homerun and had a 4-3 lead.  Because of the error, Pierre scored to make it 5-3.

  23. Dannie says:

Pete – To answer your question, Blake hit a solo homerun to make it 4-3 then this happened:

R Furcal sacrificed to first, J Pierre to third, M Kemp to second, J Pierre scored, M Kemp to third, R Furcal safe at second on throwing error by first baseman R Howard.

Which gave them one unearned run.

  24. Dannie says:

WOW – Stairs DESTROYED that ball.  Flipping out over here in King of Prussia!

  25. bski says:

Pete...We might be glad that this big, fat, slow, white guy with a mustache (Stairs) is signed for next year.

  26. klkatz says:

who do you go with in the 8th now?

  27. bball says:

    AMAZING!!

  28. bball says:

Legends are made in October.  We’ll remember this game forever. WOW

  29. bski says:

Gotta give Ruiz credit for extending the inning and getting Stairs to the plate.  He really has picked it up offensively.  2-3 tonight.

  30. Dannie says:

I think Pete might have had a heart attack from excitement or is running around his apartment screaming and terrifying his cats – and girlfriend.

  31. Dannie says:

Did anyone hear anything about Romero’s tweak of his ankle last game?

  32. bski says:

Dannie…No.  I think we’re going to find out how is is very soon.  He’s got to be coming in now, especially since the top of the order is up.  Nobody else left that Manuel would trust in this spot.

  33. bski says:

Thank God for that double play!  Walking guys in front of Manny is not the way you want to keep a lead.

  34. Dannie says:

WHEW!! No one on for Manny.  Can’t walk him.  Brad Lidge to get 4 outs.

  35. bski says:

No messing around tonight.  Lidge is coming in to get 4 outs.

  36. bski says:

I sure hope Lidge is sharp.  I don’t think I can take a 40 pitch extravaganza to get these 4 outs.

A nice and clean, lock down finish would just take the heart right out of the Dodgers….and Buck and McCarver, too.

  37. bball says:

have to make manny earn his base. Can’t blame Lidge on that one

  38. Dannie says:

Jesus how can he be that good?  It’s ridiculous he never swings at bad pitches and always hits it where there are no fielders.

  39. Dannie says:

That took the most ridiculous bounce to the right.  Never easy for us.

  40. Dannie says:

Need to get some insurance with the meat of our order coming up here.  I am very concerned with the number of pitches Lidge had to throw to get one out and then having to come back out for the first time in over a year.

  41. bski says:

15 pitches and 3 hitters to record 1 out is not exactly what the Phils, or my stomach, needed there.  Let’s hope Lidge has a much easier time with the bottom of the order in the 9th.

  42. Dannie says:

It’s the bottom of the order but you gotta expect Torre will have Kent and/or Nomar batting so it certainly won’t be AS easy as it looks.

  43. bski says:

We’re getting a little Philly love now, late, but we’re getting it.

Well, on to the 9th.  If I may lift a line from the Joker, as played by Heath Ledger, “And…here…we…go.”

  44. Dannie says:

Why the HELL would you do that with Victorino batting??

  45. Dannie says:

    ONE

  46. Dannie says:

    TWO

  47. Dannie says:

    THREE – GOODNIGHT!!

Hamels to close it out on Wednesday!!

  48. bski says:

That is more like it.  Way to take control of the series.  Gotta like Hamels vs Billingsley in game 5.

  49. bski says:

Glad I finally jumped in here with you guys.  Great chat.  Talk to you tomorrow.

  50. Rob says:

    Career LOWE!!

    For Dodgers: VICTORY-NO!!!

Either way it sounds great !!!

Matt Stairs– Get a guy from the AL and you get that kind of massive homer!!  Get more AL hitters!!

  51. J Dubbz says:

Looks like we all enjoyed that emotional rollercoaster Chahlie and the boys had us on last night.  I haven’t had ups and downs (should I say downs then ups) like that over a sporting event since the Eagles lost in the Superbowl.  From almost puking with disgust and frustration, to almost puking with excitement.
I thought the Phillies made a couple of key bad pitchers with 1-2 counts that really hurt us.  If we wanna win this thing we have to get guys out on bad pitches when ahead in the count.
The team went from looking like a bunch of little boys who lost their puppies, to a determined group of men on Victorino’s home run.  He is leading the way by example right now on that team.
As they showed the 2 hard throwing righties warming up in the Dodgers bullpen (Wade & Broxton), I thought who we had left on the bench.  When I got to Matt Stairs, I got this strange, warm feeling inside that told me he was destined for good things.  When the count got to 3-1, I knew the next pitch was gonna be smashed, but I had no idea he was gonna hit it to Mexico.
As I said yesterday, last nights game was the biggest of the playoffs thus far.  It took all the momentum away from the Dodgers and instead of a best of 3 series, we now need to win 1 of 3, with 2 of them at home.  Hopefully Hollywood Hamels can get it done tomorrow night and we can sit back and watch the AL teams beat up on each other.
    LET’S GO PHILS!!!!!!

You have to give Charlie credit for making those changes in the rotation.  For a guy that sounds and acts like a guy that doesn’t know what he is doing, he is actually a smart stubborn (in a good way) manager!!  Fans are definitely starting to accept Charlie Manuel as the Phillies skipper, as am I.  Keep up the good work Charlie!!

  53. J Dubbz says:

My only Charlie issue last night was taking Dobbs out for Feliz.  I would have rather Dobbs bat and make the defensive switch going into the top of the following inning.

  54. jjg says:

Martin’s lazy arm reach instead of full body shift on Park’s in the dirt pitch was BIG.  Free Howard run (without which bug-eyed Victorino’s HR has reduced impact).  Our boy, Carlos, would’ve blocked it with chest.

Nice to see a dues-paid, understated major league player like Matt Stairs get his first post-season HR on ‘the big stage’ in a crucial situation.  (Ball’s still rolling on Sunset Blvd. this morning.)  Did you see him shrug off Burrell’s over-the-top (playing to the camera) congratulations in dugout?

If Hamels is as great as some fans and ”experts” say, he wins tomorrow, holistically, and puts a pedicured toehold on Hall Of Fame direction.

  55. Julie says:

What a great game!  We’ll definitely have a win at Citizen’s Bank Park tomorrow night after Victorino & Hamels playoff performances.  Nice minute-by-minute update, Pete!

  56. jjg says:

Julie, Your enthusiasm exceeds grasp of logistics.  If  earthquake, fires and Santa Ana winds don’t impede, the irascible ‘Mayor Of Maui’ and lanky ‘Imperial Beach Imp’ will be doin’ their thing tomorrow at Dodger Stadium, not CBP – thought you’d like to know.

  57. James Fayleez says:

Buck and McCarver were ridiculous with the verbal BJs they were giving Manny Ramirez.

Quote: “First off, Manny Ramirez is UNBELIEVABLE….”

And that was like the beginning of every sentence.

  58. J Dubbz says:

I got extemely annoyed at the announcing when McCarver said that the unbelievable double play Utley made was “a routine catch and he stumbled to the bag”.  He couldn’t even give Chase credit where credit is due.  May have single handedly saved the game at that point.

  59. AToney22 says:

No lie – Shane Victrorino’s 2 run homer and Eli Manning’s 3rd interception almost happen at the exact same time.  I’m guessing here, but something tells me Tony Romo slammed his little finger at that same moment.  See, every now and then the sports Gods wink down at us tortured souls.

    Pete
Just read your minute by minute blog. GREAT STUFF, helped to relive the victory of last nite. Bridget told me to look last nite BUT, not that I’m superstitious, didn’t what to break the routine, (if it works…..  I ALWAYS put on my left sanatary and stirrup and left batting glove first). I have been a Phillies fan since before you were born (THANKS TO MICHEAL JACK, the greatest 3rd baseman EVER.) Hell, I’ve got Phillies shirts & hats older than you. God bless you for carrying on a tradition. Can’t tell you HOW GREAT this is living this series with Bridget. Makes it twice as sweet. She knows her baseball, a Dad’s dream. We text 30/40 time per game.
I will remember Matt Stairs HR as I remember Tug McGraw jumping in victory and Joe Carter’s great swing on a great pitch by the “Wild Thing” .
I too was pacing from the 8th inning on, did however hit my hand on the beam in the family room ceiling on Shane’s HR.
Hope Cole can close it out!
Hope to meet you someday when we are down your way!
You and Dannie keep up the good work.
    An old Phillies Phan!
    Tom T.
