Great outing for Myers.  Bullpen giving us a scare again.

  2. Dannie says:

Fittingly Shane makes the final out!

  3. bski says:

Sorry I missed this Dannie.  My younger son had soccer practice, so I was only able to watch the last 3 innings.  I only checked in here just now.

This is much different than last year, huh?  We slayed the dragon and put ourselves up 2-0.  Very nice.  Myers settled down and gave us a second consecutive very good start.  We are set up nicely now.  Confident, relaxed, rested, sending Moyer to the mound for game 3, and facing one of their lesser starters.  Time to put the Brewers away and end this thing on Saturday.

  4. Dan says:

Myers was the MVP of this game, even above Shane, in my book. He took C.C. to 10 + pitches twice. His first at bat where he worked C.C., for what 11 pitches, for a walk with 2 outs was great. The crowd was going nuts and I swear it somehow settled him down. If he strikes out like most pitchers normally would, Shane doesn’t even have a chance to hit that home run. I loved seeing C.C. hit 50 pitches by the 3rd inning.

  5. Pete says:

    all-

dannie is promising me writing things, but I’ve got a killer sinus infection, just got back from the game and I’m going to bed. will write something tomorrow.
  6. Dannie says:

You slacker! (he really does have a sinus infection)

  7. bball says:

How about Brett Meyers showing CC what a real ACE looks like!!  Good to see the Phillies coming up big against a pitcher like that.  Send us to the NLCS Jamie!

  8. klkatz says:

i love that the eagles are on the back burner…  the stars may  align…
as  of now it appears like the cubs are done…  the angels can’t beat  the red sox and the red sox can’t  beat the rays… and a rays v. phils world series  definitely is in our favor…  here’s  hoping for the best.

  9. Rob says:

WOW, Philadelphia on the front page of ESPN.com last night:

I have a great feeling that Moyer can close this one out on Saturday!!  But what is going on with the Cubs?  Angels?

  10. Morty says:

Vic: he’s small, but he’s got some pop! Wow, what a moment.

  11. bski says:

Zack…How are you liking Manuel so far?  I know it’s the players that ultimately decide whether or not he made the right call, but you’ve got to give him credit.

  12. bski says:

I’m going to begin with a declaration:  This is not a negative post. Anything that might seem negative is merely me working through my thoughts.

Even though we won game one, I was very concerned going into last night’s game.  First, the offense.  We did all of our scoring in one inning, and it was as a result of a lot of help from the Brewers.  Next, the pitching.  Even though Brad Lidge got the job done he did not look good, again.  Sabathia would be on the mound for game two, and we would be sending out Brett Myers.

As it turned out, Myers pitched very well.  This is much to his credit because we are all well aware that, in the past, a situation like that first inning would normally have been his undoing.  Lidge was sharp and attacked the hitters.  The offense, even though they did all of their scoring in one inning again which still concerns me, exhibited the patience necessary to be successful.  They really made Sabathia work, especially Brett Myers who had the two best at bats of the night.  CC threw 98 pitches (55 strikes) in 3 2/3 innings.  Even though they scored 4 of their 5 runs on one swing and Utley and Howard didn’t do anything, we are talking about Sabathia here.  They did score and beat the best pitcher in the NL, if not all of MLB.

Even though there are still concerns, like the fact that we have not been able to add on runs and put the Brewers away earlier, and the fact that, even though they have not broken through, the Brewers have put some pressure on us late, there is a lot to be encouraged about.  First, Hamels and Myers gave us two very good starts, so it looks like they’ll be solid going forward.  Same goes for Lidge, now that he seems to be back to his old self.  Second, the bullpen has hardly been used (Madson 2/3 of an inning and Romero 1/3–actually 1 pitch).  Third, Moyer is pitching game three for us.  I expect him to continue to give us what he has all season.  Fourth, Dave Bush is pitching game three for them.  I expect us, especially Utley and Howard, to get the offense revved up and put some runs on the board.  Fifth, We appear to be relaxed and confident.  We look like a team who has grown since last year, while Milwaukee really looks like us from last year.  I really think a lot of the credit for this has to go to Charlie Manuel.  He is in a groove right now where he is consistently making the right calls.

I’m really hoping for a sweep so that we can get ourselves set  to play the Dodgers, as it appears that they will be sweeping the Cubs.

  13. Rob says:

After Game 2 for Sabathia–   VICTORY  NO!!

  14. Steve says:

Hard to feel anything but optomistic being up 2-0 , but I feel some of bski’s anxiety that the Phils left about a dozen guys on base and didn’ t put up more runs last night. Game one was a defensive breakdown by the Brewers , and we can’t count on that in the future.   Howard’s gotta start going long.

  15. Rob says:

I know what you’re saying Steve, but as long as the Phils take whatever opportunity is there for a win, then so be it!!
