Everyone is pretty high off the 5-game winning streak the Sixers are on right now. This is the type of play we expected the Sixers to start the season with. I am looking at it as delayed stages. They are behind the curve right now. The way they have played the last 7 games is the type of progression that should have started much earlier.

Stages
Most people gave the Sixers a 15-20-game grace period to figure out the Brand transition. I just thought that was too large a portion of the season. Playoff positioning begins game one in my mind, and the Sixers don’t want to face Boston, Cleveland or Orlando in the first round. That means they need to get to 4th or 5th in the conference to have a significantly better chance of getting out of the first round. So I gave them 10 games to figure out the first two stages with the expectation that proceeding through the next couple stages would be at an accelerated level. The rest is all about locking in an identity, a consistent style of play and learning what it takes to be a winner. The stages…
- Integrate Elton within the Sixers existing up-tempo style of play (still delayed)
- Existing Sixers players learn to play their game and excel with Brand (legit low block player) in the line up (still delayed)
- Lock in a consistent rotation where everyone has a realistic expectation of minutes and clearly knows their roles
- Dominate weak teams
- Bare minimum split against equal level opponents
- Compete with the elite teams. They don’t win, but they don’t get smashed either. (I hate this stage because I hate moral victories ,but for an up-and-coming team it’s part of the process I guess.)
- Start winning some games against the elite teams
- Become an elite team
Right now I think the Sixers are somewhere between 3 and 4. I still need to see them dominate the way they did last night against Portland more often. They will get two chances in the next 4 games against the Knicks who are playing well but still are a sub par team. I think it is safe to assume they skipped the first two steps because of poor coaching and Brand going down. Now the question is: can they reorder the stages to work Brand in without going backwards?
Making the Brand Comeback Work
Many people are really concerned about the expected return of Elton and how he will fit in Dileo’s winning formula. Those concerns are real and understandable. You see the team playing extremely well without Brand, and the first and easy conclusion many come to is pointing the finger at Brand like he was clearly the problem. Elton Brand doesn’t fit. The Sixers can’t run with Brand. Miller and Iguodala can’t excel with Brand. Lot’s of thoughts, lots of concerns.
The first issue for Dileo is minutes. This is the least of my concerns personally, but none the less working Brand into the current rotation is something that must be done effectively. Without thinking much about it I think some guys will lose some minutes, but it won’t be that drastic and will be fluid based on individual game situation. What I think will happen is guys will simply get minutes at different positions when Brand returns.
I was just about to go crazy figuring this out to the minute, but our friend over at the Depressed Fan already did. Check out his playing time distribution with Brand. Well done, Brian.
Production is the Real Concern
I am less concerned about minutes and more concerned about production. Guys are playing really well right now, and one wonders if this is because Brand is out or because they are just naturally progressing and hitting their stride. How do you maximize the team’s production given how many minutes everyone will likely be playing with Brand back? Let me repeat: how do you maximize THE TEAM’S production. I think we tend to get caught up in how individual guys’ performance. When at the end of the day the only thing that matters are team wins. If that means some players’ scoring decreases a bit so be it. Not about the individual.
I think production will be based on ball and shot distribution. A few things can happen with regard to this, but here’s how I think it should start.
The Sixers play how they are playing now, and Brand’s shot attempts are reduced a bit (14.4 per game, most on the team). This is more a product of the offense being more open as it is now and not forced through him in the post. He will get some touches, but he will have to use his basketball IQ to get in scoring positions without having the ball on the block as much.
I wouldn’t worry to much about Iguodala or Andre Miller’s shot attempts. Miller is actually shooting less in games without Brand (13FGA with vs. 12.5FGA without) and is doing a lot more of his scoring from the line. I am really curious to see if he attempts more threes off kick-outs from Brand. Part of the problem was Miller’s spacing when Brand posted up. He spotted up inside the arc; he will need to step back to create better floor spacing, and with his willingness and conscious decision to shoot the three, I think we will see that happen.
Iguodala is actually attempting only two more shots per game. His improved scoring is more about better efficiency than more attempts. Iguodala agrees, and so should you. I don’t see why that wouldn’t remain the same as long as he keeps shooting the ball well and the Sixers keep running at a high rate.
My biggest question is where on the court does Brand spend the majority of his time? Low post? Mid post? High post? Short corner? Out high setting screens? I think this is important to think about. With two real bigs on the floor it will be harder to play a 4 out style on offense which has helped to create more driving lanes. The bonus though is Brand is a much better option to receive passes off that penetration than Sam. So maybe the better question is how to keep Sam out of they way offensively?
This will have a lot to do with how Dileo integrates Brand offensively which to this point is still an unknown. They’ve talked about how he is the perfect trailer on the break, yadda, yadda, yadda. I really am not worried about that. When they do have to play half court offense how do you develop continuity and consistency? How do you space the floor with two big men? Our only basis for this is how Mo used Brand. Which I think it’s safe to assume Dileo has some other (better?) ideas in mind.
Let’s hope his plan is sound and successful.
Over to you guys as usual. With Brand possibly available tomorrow night against the Spurs what is going through you head?

I agree, Dannie, that it took too long for the Sixers to start playing the way they were expected to by the end of November. Now that they seem to have a winning formula, it’s about to be altered by having to incorporate Brand back into the rotation. Brand will only play 15 minutes or so in his first game back (my guess is Saturday in New York), but within a week he should be back to 30 minutes and a regular role. His return impacts the entire team and, specifically, the minutes of Young, Evans, Dalembert, Speights and Ratliff.
the thing is that everyone thought that, being a PF, brand was a low-post scorer. his bread & butter though is the 10-12ft jump shot. i still have no idea whether this is a good or bad thing.
brian at the depressed fan recommends to cut iguodala’s minutes when brand returns, which i disagree with. iguodala’s +/- is at the top of the league. a huge problem i had with mo was when he’d take iguodala out at the end of the 1st quarter and leave him on the bench until the middle of the 2nd quarter. that was usually when we would lose all those leads in the beginning of the season.
41 is too many minutes, I just said they should cut him back to 38, which is still a ton of minutes, but slightly more sustainable.
I agree with Brian I don’t think the Sixers need Iguodala to play 41 minutes every game. 38 on average is just fine. Of course minutes are always on a game-by-game basis if he is on a tear by all means he should stay on the floor as long as possible to take advantage of the hot hand.
With our style I think 36 min. should be the max. for anybody, we have to keep the energy up. I have 2 questions, can Elton be put in the same role of Thad lately, and can Thad take over Willies role because I don!t want to mess with Iggy at all. Thad, when not spotting up has been real effective 15 ft. from the basket and Elton, from what I saw earlier in the year can be effective facing the basket and actually seems to be a better passer facing the basket.Other than shooting the 3 Elton should be able to play Thad!s role. As far as Willie!s role , Ithink Thad has become more aggressive lately and has been driving more to the hoop so hopefully he won!t fall into that “sit in the corner and shoot the jumper ” trap that he got into earlier in the year. Dannie, I still feel a post player by committee ap[proach works for this team and if Elton gets over 50 % of his points from 10 to 15 ft. I have no problem with it. Who loses minutes; Willie-10,Reggie-5 ,Sam-5,Thad-5, and Iggy -5 and the others a couple. The key for Deleo will be to use Reggie,Ivey and Willie whenever our intensity falters and I think Willie starts till Elton gets comfortable but than we go back to our starting lineup at the beginning of the year.
Every single minute that Willie Greene plays is a worthless minute. He should be getting 6-8 minutes max a game sprinkled in there with man.
Also Speights minutes need to go up, this kid is too damn good. I would like to see his minutes be pushed up to about 30 minutes, with sam getting 14 and theo getting 4 minutes. Speights and Brand together is just money!
Greek – Willie Green is the guard equivalent of Reggie Evans this season. his value lies in more than production; he brings energy. dunno what thats worth to you but i think that has been key to the bench play. you wanna sit him DNP-CD fine, but don’t think you won’t miss something. i think he even plays better defense than some of our starters on the 2-guards, which is strange.
well forgive me not DNP-CD….but DiLeo’s deciding to play him. thats fine enough for me.
Jkay, I respect your opinion but I disagree on the level of energy that he brings. His niche should be coming off the bench for s spark just as he did early on in the season when he was one of the few players who was actually playing well. With Brand coming back and Speights development, Willie is the odd man out.
Brand seemed most effective at the “5″ when they play small ball. I think he knows his body more than anybody and understands what strides the team has gone through in his absence. The other thing people forget is that he is a high IQ player, which was one of the many reasons why we signed Brand. In Movember, we were just standing around while we were star-gazing at our two-time All-Star (sound familiar?). Hopefully, he will be able to kick the ball out in time for our other players on the offensive end and hopefully hit the threes as was expected by us fans and management. Luckily for this season, management is pulling the strings and we are (and hopefully) beginning to see the team we envisioned over the long, (dynamite Sixer offseason) summer! It would be great if he comes back tonight against the Spurs, we need a guy who really knows Duncan’s game and his experience in the West really helps. Out West, the games are more uptempo and he can play through that! He did it with the Clippers, including that magical year where they advanced to the second round and lost in seven to the Suns. In the East, the tempo is a bit slower overall, but the Sixers play like a Western team. Any extra bodies on Duncan really helps! Brand is the anchor, while Dalembert can block the shot thanks to Brand’s weakside help. That way, we have 3.5 interior one-on-one defenders (including Ratliff and a little bit of Speights) on Duncan, who must be guarded one-on-one due to their team’s stellar three point shooting. That way our guards and small forwards can focus on defending the perimeter. There is that trust factor on who is guarding who. Dalembert is a good one-on-one defender who gets into foul trouble partially due to his teammates overhelping him and it alters what he originally wanted to do defensively. When Brand did play and after every dead possession, he would talk to teammates about any turnovers or mistakes they committed and talk about what to do on the next possession. We need to implement a 1.5 team strategy (one-on-one with a partial double teaming on the weakside along with the shot clock awareness. Now, we just have to be sharper on the defensive end for 48 (or more) minutes! Get those defensive rebounds and watch out for the perimeter shooters (especially Mason)!
Also, the Spurs signed Austin Croshere to a 10-day contract!!
? What do we do with Miller at the deadline? Do we keep him and let him walk after the season thus losing his money slot? Do we re-sign him to a three year 32-36 million dollar contract? Or do we make a play for the future and make this trade..
Andre Miller and Reggie Evans for Jerryd Bayless, and Raef LaFrentz?
The salaries match up. The blazers would take it to another level with Miller as there pg, and being that there softer then a pillow having a guy like Evans would be great for them. The Blazers announcers were begging for a guy like evans the other day. Plus Reggie did play with Nate McMillan in seattle so they know each other. LaFrentz’s contract runs expires after this season. And Bayless does have deep range.
