Two days ago I wrote a post about Elton Brand being available according to a Chad Ford chat. A few things have happened since then.
The first of which is Phil Jasner doing his best to shoot down a Brand rumor.
My comment: Calm down. While Sixers’ president/general manager Ed Stefanski said he does not comment on rumors, a source familiar with the Sixers’ situation said that Ford’s premise is incorrect, that Stefanski had not contacted anyone about Brand, that the chat session comment had no legs. – Phil Jasner
What premise? Chad Ford did exactly what Jasner is doing now – pointing to the infamous “source.” Jasner followed that up with this today:
Sixers’ president/general manager Ed Stefanski said he does not comment on rumors, but a source familiar with the Sixers’ situation insisted that Stefanski had made no trade-related calls involving Brand and that he had no interest in dealing the player he signed to a 5-year, $79.8 million contract during the summer. – Phil Jasner
This quote was a little more direct than the first but again no direct quote from the man himself, Ed Stefanski. Merely another case of the infamous “source.”
Chad Ford held to his initial Brand rumor today in his big men trade watch article.
I’ve heard rumblings over the past few weeks that the Sixers would let Brand go for expiring contracts and a future pick — a pretty small price for the most coveted free agent of last summer. – Chad Ford
To me this just says Ford didn’t arbitrarily throw that comment about Brand being available in the chat session. He obviously had been planning to write a more formal piece on it as evidenced by his article today. What’s more interesting is the 20% chance he is attaching to the idea of Brand being traded. That seems high, right?
The way I read all of this is the same as always. It’s on us to come to our own conclusions. Who do you trust more? Jasner or Ford? Until we hear something directly from the horse’s mouth or see a deal done all of this just speculation by two reporters and their anonymous buddies. That speculation just adds to the ongoing conversation about the team we already have been carrying on.
My take: I don’t believe Stefanski has been actively shopping Elton. I don’t think he has proactively made trade-related calls to other teams about Brand. But what I do know is Stefanski has said he won’t preach patience. If there is a move he feels will improve the team now he would do it. The specificity that Ford is reporting about what the Sixers would want in return in a Elton Brand trade is generic in my opinion. From the beginning I read the initial Elton Brand rumor like this: someone tossed the idea out to Stefanski at some point in the last couple months that involved Brand, and Stefanski’s response was soft enough that the person came away from the conversation feeling Brand wasn’t totally off-limits. If there is a deal that makes sense for the Sixers that involves Brand, Stefanski would entertain it. Nothing more, nothing less.
$60-$70 Million Asking Price for Andre Miller?
Umm yeah that is the Andre Miller nonsense I was referring to in the post title. It comes from a HoopsWorld article I read today by Steve Kyler that is mostly regurgitated quotes from a CSNPhilly article by Jordan Raanan I had planned to write about this weekend. Here is the money quote:
Miller is said to be seeking a $60 to $70 million package, which 12 months ago would have been a “no-brainer”, but with the team finally getting back to respectability a long-term commitment now might not happen, simply because of the early season struggles. The risk of losing Andre for nothing is very real, the question becomes does Philly blink and enter the trade market at the deadline? – Steve Kyler, HoopsWorld
Said by who? Who said Miller is seeking that nonsensical salary package? How many years is that contract? 6 plus? Is he taking a page out of Jason Kidd’s book indicated he wants to play until he is 40?
The funny thing about that quote is Kyler doesn’t even have the infamous “source” that other well established reporters regularly point to.
My take: I won’t even go after Andre Miller or his agent on this one because I don’t believe it’s coming from their camp. I think it’s a made-up number by a writer looking to create some news on an intriguing topic that has been relatively quiet. Good marketing ploy, that obviously worked since I am linking to them and Brian over at the Depressed Fan had done so already as well. Miller and his agent have remained extremely quiet, and that fits Miller’s demeanor. For them to really toss that number out would be completely out of character in my opinion.
If you are going to toss out a made-up number at least make it half-believable. Those figures are not by any stretch of the imagination. Not for a 33-year-old-to-be point guard with no range and minimal defensive ability.
Your turn. What’s your take on all the recent Sixers hoopla?

About Brand, one thing that is very noticeable to me is that Stefanski has not come out and said that these rumors are untrue or that Brand is off limits. This is good from our standpoint because it falls in line with Stefanski’s professions about having limited patience and wanting to win now. It also sends us the message that he will do whatever is necessary to make this a winning basketball team, even trading our crown jewel free agent pick up. At the same time it sends a message to Brand that they signed him to produce and if he doesn’t he may not be here for long.
Jasner said this in his article today…..“Brand confirmed that Stefanski had spoken to him. He seemed comfortable and at ease last night.”
He also had this……“”Anytime there’s speculation, and as you get close to the [deadline], that’s when you know it’s a business,” Brand said. “I’m just here to win, to play my heart out. I haven’t been in a lot of [rumors], and I know that if we were 30-10, this wouldn’t be the case. I understand where it would come from, even if it’s from a fan, a chat session, e-mail.”
Stefanski seems like a straight shooter and these quotes make me think that he is being honest with Brand. They also make me think that Brand fully understands that it’s all about production and getting wins. Do that and all the rumors will disappear.
Dannie: I think you make a key point in talking about how out of character this would be given Andre Miller’s personality. Andre is a quiet, humble, no nonsense guy that has been not only classy and professional his entire career, but does not enjoy the spotlight, and I sincerely doubt is the type that would start asking his agents to play media games with smoke and mirror rumors.
Plus…$60-70 million for a 5-6 year contract for a 33 year old aging PG…who many would argue is not even among the leagues top 10 PG’s…might be one of the dumbest rumors I have heard all year.
Congratulations to Jameer Nelson, pride of Chester, PA and the Chester High School Clippers, on being selected to his first NBA All-Star team!
Great to see a local kid reach that height.
Dannie, your thoughts on Elton I believe are dead on. If out of the blue a player that is a perfect guy for this team became available [Stoudemire ?] than Elton may get moved but otherwise he will dictate where we go from here. I personally think he can run well enough for it to work here. A.Miller and his agent are probably going to realize sooner rather than later that the market is slim for him out there. Any contender out west can!t possibly want him going against T.Parker or C.Paul in a 7 game series and does he really want to start over at a Sacramento or Minnesota . E.S. will offer him a deal that is fair for him and the team and I believe he likes it here just by his body language this season, articles about his high school football experience and stuff shows me he is opening up a bit. It is a gamble if an agreement isn!t talked about before the trade deadline but with Royal, L.Will., and probably a young p.g. from the draft in place over the summer it is a hand that E.S. is probably willing to play. Jumpin, that was some backcourt St. Joes had, wasn!t it.
suede 2 smart, tough, poised competitors. Glad they’ve each found good NBA spots.
Jumpin, a 3 point question off of your previous discussion with Morty; a] can Thad do what Willie is doing now offensively opposite Iggy. b] can Willie and Reggie be used to push L.Will. and Marreese to defend and make smart plays off the bench and accept their roles. c] can a Royal and Willie backcourt be used to turn up defensive pressure when needed. And one other thing, if Willie gets married does Morty get an invitation ?
suede
a) don’t see why not; 8 pts. aren’t hard to replace, but a poised and deferring mind is
b) negligible influence; by your 20s, ya either got it or ya don’t
c) yes, have already suggested that combo here with that purpose in mind, though quickest PGs would give ‘em trouble
“one other thing” m2 old for hypotheticals; plus, can’t speak for others
Dannie When I edit my writing, it sometimes appears on your blog space-illogical after sending; when that occurs, feel free to make it more readable. Thanks.
St. Joe’s pride: JJ and Suede, now that Jameer is an all star (a shame Iverson robbed another more deserving player of a spot though) and D. West has carved out a great niche for himself in the NBA, there’s only one step left for our Hawks to put their official stamp on the NBA…
Let the Dwayne Jones era begin.
vs. Wizards: Living in DC, I have gotten the “honor” of watching one too many Wizards games. This team plays absolutely no defense, their backcourt is a hodge podge mess of talent right now, and their frontcourt, Jamison aside, is incredibly inconsistent, even though they have some decent young talent there.
I would really like to see our Sixers take advantage of this flailing team and just smash them out of the building. And given the Wizards lack of interior defense in particular, and that Jamison is a bit undersized himself, I think this would be a perfect opportunity for Brand to assert himself amidst the stupid Chad Ford rumors with a 20 & 10.
I’ll take anything close to the 27/9 he put up against Wash in DiLeo’s 1st game.
I’ll agree Dave and tk76. I was thinking the same thing. I was at that game. Brand was stroking the 15-footer and we easily handled the Wiz. Looking for us to put them away early tonight and for Brand to quiet the rumor mill.
I’d be honored to attend Willie Green’s nuptials, where do I apply? Although, it almost sounds like some harebrained desperate idea from the Sixers marketing department: “2 tickets to Sixers-Wizzards, 2 hotdogs, 2 sodas and 2 invitations to Willie Green’s nuptials this May with 2 Sixers Dancers as your dates…”
jjg: I was guessing that the space-illogical was merely the beginning of your e e cummings phase
