Sixers Unveil New Uniforms for 2009-10

Image of New Sixers Uniforms

I personally have been very excited for this day since the Sixers announced they were going back to their old logo. They said that the new unis would be similar to those worn by Moses, Charles and the Doctor, but would have a more modern feel. I always thought that if you are a classic team, you should never modernize your logo, and the Sixers certainly did the right thing by going back. You can see the result above and below are several more pictures  - I’ll put my thoughts after the pictures and will add new pictures as I find them. More photos under the jump as well…

My Thoughts

  • I love the shorts – love them. I might have to splurge and buy my first pair of real NBA shorts. Haven’t found a good picture of them yet, working on it.
  • The white writing on the road jersey without any sort of outline looks strange to me. I think a thin blue outline would have done wonders. For some reason the lack of one makes it look a little amateurish to me.
  • I like the home jersey a lot more – the blue on the white is OK without an outline, and I like the red number with the blue lettering. I also think that the little hint of red on the collar works better than the white on the collar for the road.
  • The little hint of white or red under the arm works for me.
  • I do like the simplicity of the jerseys. No flashy logo or crazy pinstripes or weird number fonts. Simple and traditional.
  • The color make-up, particularly from the back, looks a little too much like the Clippers.
  • One positive about the road uni – the blue outline isn’t as shiny as it looked in the leaked Jrue Holiday picture (seen above).
  • Overall, I give the shorts an A, the home uni a B+ and the away a B-, and the overall look a B+, and I reserve the right to change my mind after I see them in a couple games.

So that is one man’s opinion – what do you think? An improvement over the Iverson-era logo? Better or worse than you expected? What do you like, not like?

And one follow-up question – if you felt the urge to buy a new Sixers jersey, who would you buy? Since Iverson left, I haven’t felt an urge to buy

  1. tk76 says:

Not horrible.  I do agree they really need a border to the bnumbers and letters.  As of now it looks like iron-on decals from a rec-league jersey.  I wonder if they will start to peel off after a few washings like my rec league jersey?

  2. Dannie says:

I think the lack of outlining around the waist band of the shorts drops the grade down to a B+.  Other than that I really like the shorts and will be getting me some.

I agree with Pete I think the letters could have used some outline and I like the home whites best.

If only there was a player on the team whose jersey I actually wanted to wear…

  3. Dannie says:

TK76 – Does any team have stitched on letters and numbers anymore?

  4. RRose says:

Just attended the new uni unveiling.  Nice.  I wish they went back to the jersey with the stars down the side but I guess some ruling from the NBA may not allow it.  Maybe not but it would have been great to see.

  5. Ryan F says:

I like them alot, but after the last few years anything is better.  wish the shorts had the red white and blue waistband though.

  6. Dannie says:

RROSE – I am just going to assume you are joking about the unis with the stars.

  7. Pete says:

dannie – I think he was talking about the ones from 71-77

  8. Pete says:

bobcats also have new unis this year…. not sure if anyone else does….

Love the new Bobcats home unis, the road ones are a little much, but at least they ditched the orange.
  9. Dannie says:

Pete – My point was based on either of the “stars” uniforms as they are both on our 10 worst uniforms list.

  10. Pete says:

yeah – but the one from 70s was on the list for the Sixers font, not the stars

  11. Chris McC says:

They look great.  An outlining around the lettering would make them perfect.

At this point I think Elton Brand has spent more time in uniform for promos then he has for games…

  12. Dannie says:

OK let me just make my point crystal clear

    My unadulterated opinion: Stars sucks!

    : )

  13. Dannie says:

    Chris -

At this point I think Elton Brand has spent more time in uniform for promos then he has for games…

    Spot on!

  14. Chris McC says:

New bobcats unis look great.  Its nice to see a couple teams (PHI and CHAR) go to a cleaner look.  these over the top uniforms in sports are going to give somebody a seizure.

  15. Pete, love the detailed analysis, really. And I would tend to agree with you on pretty much every point, especially about the shorts and the outline around the lettering.

But at the end of the story, I have a bad taste in my mouth. They didn’t screw them, but they didn’t get the job 100% done either

I was ready to buy tons of merchandise via Internet, like a 14 y/o kid, and I will buy a t-shirt with the old logo in the best case.

  16. Ryan F says:

Stars are pretty weak, every time I see a star I think of Dallas

  17. The Real Rob says:

It’s a hybrid look– bringing the old with the new!  I love it, especially the home uniforms!  This team will be under the radar and perhaps fans could come back, given the traditional look is back.

  18. tk76 says:

700 Level was told that some tweaks (including adding a border to the lettering) could happen later this year.  Seems odd they would make a change so soon, but I hope they do.  Either way, not a bad uniform… certainly not Sean Bradley stars bad…

  19. Johnnylaptop says:

Uniforms look nice and clean,  I talked to my son yesterday about getting a  Thad jersey.  I think he is going to really going to improve this year, surpassing  Iggy’s  numbers. Thad looks pumped up in his new uiniform.

  20. Ryan F says:

I wouldn’t give Thad that much yet, a new uniform doesn’t teach you to pass or rebound and Jordan’s don’t make you jump higher.

  21. The Greek says:

Ryan you should appreciate a 21 year old who went out and averaged 15.5 points a game in the NBA last year.  A kid who has been busting his azz day in and day out on the court over the summer in order to improve.  What is he now 21?   Get that Jersey for your son Johnny because 3 years from now when Thad is leading us to wherever the hell were going, his jersey will triple in price.

Dannie, is it me or did Thad look taller then Brand in that first pic?

  22. Dannie says:

Greek – It’s just you.  Thad is 6-8 and Brand is 6-9 and that one inch is evident to me in all the pictures.

Ryan – I agree with you.  While I am not a huge Iguodala fan I do appreciate his contributions to most areas of the game.  Thad is not even close in that respect yet.

Greek – I find is comical that when talking about Thad you pretty much only talk about his scoring.  I remember a conversation you initiated about Sammy and how he didn’t get assists.  When I came back at you about how little assists Thad got you had not defense except to continue bashing Sammy.

Thad has shown an ability to score some points and run like a deer.  The rest of this game has been inconsistent (defense, rebounding) and his playmaking ability for teammates has been completely nonexistent.

He is a nice young player, that is still just that – a nice young player.  Not a star, not an Olympian, not a future HOFer.  Just a nice young player.

  23. Pete says:
  24. Ryan F says:

Greek – I love Thad,  and I would tell Johnny to go get that jersey.  He has huge “upside”, he does score the ball very well, and he’s a good kid and I appreciate character as much as anything, but to say that he will surpass Iguodala’s numbers is as bold as saying that OKC will win the west, being he has shown he is not consistent in any other area other than that 15ppg.

Dannie – I know youre not but Im going to keep trying to do my best to change that.

I think everyone here by now recognizes  I am a huge Iguodala fan and I think he is extremely undervalued not just by our fans but by basketball fans in general, so I get defensive at times.  Is he LeBron or Kobe, no, but the guy is a very very talented player.  He wasn’t hyped coming out of college, his game gets ugly at times, his form is broke and he isn’t a pretty boy but he plays hard on both sides of the ball and is a good guy and I appreciate that.  The only thing I can say I don’t like about the guy is his celebrations, they remind me of AI and make me want vomit.  Like after game 1 or in LA on the buzzer beater.

  25. Dannie says:

Buzzer beater game one against LA is one of my all-time greatest Sixers moments.  Him stepping over Lue is and will forever be classic.

I also don’t at all think the celebrations are related at all.  Iverson did stuff for the crowd and he didn’t run away from his teammates and act like he wasn’t expecting to make the big shot he took.

    Big difference.

  26. The Greek says:

Dannie I pointed out that Sammy had the worst assist to turnover ratio out of anyone who had played over 200 minutes in the NBA.  Your point was that centers don’t handle the ball much or dont make that many turnovers in the course of the game.  In the Princeton offense your going to see what the worst passing big man in the history of the game does to destroy this system.

Like i said last year much to your dissaproval,  you can’t win with Sammy.  Can’t do it, not gonna do it Singletary style.

We should be focusing on the positives instead of arguing about Sammy already!   Let’s wait until game 1 when Sammy is firing outlet passes into the upper deack to talk Sammy.

We have reason for optimism, 4 returning or new players
    1 Brand
    2 Smith
    3 Jrue
    4 Carney, always a fan

  27. Ryan F says:

Exactly.  I was talking about Iguodala, with the find some dude in the crowd and slap the hell out of him 50 times while my team tries to get a second with me celebration, or the I have big balls dance he does from time to time.

Iverson over Lue is classic I don’t think anyone would disagree, or the hand to the ear.  I just like it when players act like they’ve been there before, unless its a championship of course.

  28. Dannie says:

Greek – No, that’s what you’re going to see, regardless of what the reality is.

My stance on Dalembert has always been that his defense and rebounding contributions far outweigh the fact that he isn’t a go to offensive option (although when he does shoot it’s at a decent clip in terms of FG%) in the front-court and he has typically been one of the top 3 players on the Sixers in terms of wins produced.  And most metrics suggest he is at least an average NBA player.

Until you or someone else provides more than shallow and incomplete observations or his defense and rebounding get considerable worse that’s where my stance will remain.

I am optimistic that at least (hopefully) this season and team will look different.  New coach, (hopefully) healthy Brand and Smith.  And a first round pick with some expectations.

I am more curious than optimistic at this point.

  29. Pete says:

    greek -

was the omission of Kapono intentional on your “new players” list?
  30. Ryan F says:

I think everyone actually keeps forgetting he’s on the roster, I do.  It’s been so long since the trade, we haven’t got to see him play and the media hasn’t mentioned much about it.

  31. RRose says:

    @ Danni,

The 1976 jersey?  Yes man I loved those.  Classic Dr. J, Doug Collins, McGinest.  Not the Dana Baros Jersey.  That was horrific.

  32. The Greek says:

lol no pete it wasn’t intentional, its just that I am super stoked to watch Brand, Carney, Smtih, and Jrue.  Can’t say that I am super excited to watch Kapono but I am very happy that he is on our team.

Dannie, I am sorry if you think that my reasons for not liking Sam are shallow.  They might or might not be.  But I know that he is someone that I don’t want to pay to see, or root for.  I would love to root against him someday when he is on the other team.  I really don’t want to get into negative talk until it’s warranted.

  33. The Greek says:

Dannie, or anyone else who wants to throw there theory in here. Stefanksi said that he envisions Willie G in a Luscious Harris type irregular pg role. My take on this is that WIllie will not be getting any burn at the sg position. He will be competing with Ivey for the 3rd pg role and will be getting sparadic minutes from game to game.

Is that you you see it? Or am I just being optomistic that Willie won’t be our sg again?

  34. tk76 says:

I know Lou does not get much love over hear, so I thought I’d pass along this quote from Eddie Jordan to help stir the pot (from T. Moore:)

“on Lou Williams: “We want him to attack. We want Lou to be Lou. We’re not going to walk the ball up with him. We’re going to give him every opportunity to be a 38-minute-a-game player.”

  35. tk76 says:

sorry for grammar typo.  Fingers type without telling brain…

  36. Dannie says:

Greek – Ed also said they never really know Willie’s role going into training camp and the season and every year he seems to find/work his way on the court for regular minutes.  That either speaks very highly of Willie or very poorly of the overall talent the Sixers have had.

I don’t think there will be much time on the wing for Green with Thad and Dala getting the bulk of the minutes at 2 and 3 assuming Brand plays all year and then the first guy in has to be Kapono.

Willie will then have a bit more competition with Carney for wing minutes.

BUT, I think you jump the gun a bit saying he would be competing with Ivey for the 3rd point guard role.  I wouldn’t assume Holiday is set as the 2nd string point.  I think it’s just as safe to assume Ed saying  he envisions Willie G in a Luscious Harris type irregular pg role might me as the back-up point guard and Holiday will have to show enough to earn and snatch that spot from Green at this point.

Ed said he doesn’t see any reason why Holiday won’t get regular minutes this season if he plays the defense everything believe he can play and doesn’t turn the ball over.

Remember he is still a rookie and this team isn’t exactly playing for the lottery.  They expect to make the playoffs and as Stefanski said “make some noise.”

Right now if I had to project a fluid depth chart with who minutes would be distributed at different positions I would quickly guess something like this:

    PG – Lou/Green/Holiday/Ivey
    SG – Iguodala/Kapono/Lou/Green/Carney
    SF – Thaddeus/Iguodala/Kapono/Carney
    PF – Brand/Thad/Speights/Smith
    C – Sam/Speights/Smith

    Thoughts?

  37. Pete says:

ha – I just put a post up about just what you guys are ABOUT to start talking about – the distribution of minutes…. so let’s bring that convo over there

  38. Hanif says:

I Think They Suck……….The Letterng needs sometype of outline.. they look really strange… i think they should of just kept the ones the were wearing as throw backs last year… I Dont think these jerseys will stand very long…well at least i hope they dont…I even like the ones they wore in A.I rookie season better…..TRY AGAIN
