Sixers vs. Cavs: Any Shot?

by Dannie

Accuscore is giving the Sixers a 11% chance to win.  Is it really that high?

  • The Sixers are 5-7.
  • They haven’t played one good game in 12 tries.
  • The coach thinks he has a team full of punks.
  • The players think the coach is equally if not more to blame.
  • Infighting.
  • Conveniently quiet GM.
  • On the road in the second game of a back-t0-back.

The odds are pretty much stacked to the brim against the Sixers winning in Cleveland tonight.  But I can’t wait.

I can’t wait to see how the team and the coach responds to a bad loss to Memphis at home. I can’t wait to see how each individual player responds to being called out as soft for the second time in a week.

Someone has to man up right?

When frustration, controversay, turmoil, like this happens you look to the leader.  But who is the person?  It’s not the coach.  It’s not the highest paid players.  It’s not an unheralded role player.

So one has to wonder what will be the catalyst for positive change for the Sixers.

I am all out of answers.

I don’t know why the coaches line-ups are the way they are.  I don’t know why no 5 man group can consistently execute an offense.  I have no clue why a team full of physically capable players can not defend anyone – ever.  I don’t know why guys can’t pulled down a rebound.  I don’t know why this team doesn’t take pride in playing the game they supposedly love.

I fully expect the Sixers to get smoked.  There is no reason to waste any optimism on this team right now.  They need to earn their keep.  They need to earn our loyalty, patience and confidence in them.

They’ve completely lost mine and I am not sure these players and coaches can ever get it back.

Agree, agree, and agree again; I have been trying to find a trade of Thad for some toughness, I am just as disgusted Dannie!!!!

I look forward to seeing how the Sixers will react and perhaps bounce back from a disappointing loss.  If anything, there is a Flyers-Coyotes game being played as well!  Now, the Flyers are no softies whatsoever!

GO SIXERS AND FLYERS!!

3 Zack 11.21.09 at 7:39 pm

will be around for ~ first quarter

Kapono’s probably not playing, good news in a way, shortens coach jordan’s rotation

4 Zack 11.21.09 at 7:41 pm

i wanna see philly run run run

5 Zack 11.21.09 at 7:45 pm

brand should learn to work further away from the basket, there’s an NBA pf who’s good at this, David West I think

6 Zack 11.21.09 at 7:48 pm

6ers have been helpless on defense…  back to 07-08 fellas, cause them turnovers!

7 Zack 11.21.09 at 7:51 pm

look at those two fastbreaks, Iggy’s fubbed one vs. James’ beautiful one – I don’t ever wanna hear any comparisons between these two.

8 Garvey 11.21.09 at 7:52 pm

No reason to look at this game. Cavs seem ready to end this early…20-4

9 Zack 11.21.09 at 7:56 pm

this whole cavaliers team is “in the zone”

10 Zack 11.21.09 at 7:59 pm

I hope Jordan is telling Lou, “Mo Williams has 10 points already, what are you gonna do about it?!?”

11 The Greek 11.21.09 at 8:02 pm

iggy needs to go….  And Sammy D needs to be bought out, as I said last year after the first game YOU CAN’T WIN WITH HIM……… And I was fuking spot on

12 Garvey 11.21.09 at 8:04 pm

Thad has NO confidence right now

13 Garvey 11.21.09 at 8:06 pm

my bad i ment defense not confidence

14 guest 11.21.09 at 8:14 pm

I think we all know what Andre will be working on in the offseason.

15 Garvey 11.21.09 at 8:15 pm

time to shorten that rotation a bit Eddie….Carney should take a huge chunk out of Bill Greens minutes here on out.

Haha Sixers comin back and Varejao helpin them big time

16 Mark E Mark 11.21.09 at 8:19 pm

Willie Green sucks.

17 Dannie 11.21.09 at 8:23 pm

Mark E Mark – Watch the language that’s too much.

18 Dannie 11.21.09 at 8:25 pm

Brand – 7 boards in 14 minutes.  He came to play.

19 Ed R. 11.21.09 at 8:29 pm

Brand is the only one who has shown up the last 3 games. Forget Williams career night last night. A guy who is nothing more than a statue on defense can score 60 points and get no respect from me. At least Nash and his awful defense makes other players better.
I just want someone to step up and become the leader of this team, I actually think Brand might do it. I really do. Maybe its wishful thinking, who knows. We shall see.

20 Thunda_Chunky 11.21.09 at 8:32 pm

What’s the deal Iguodala? Bricking lay ups left and right. This is ridiculous. He’s 8 for 27 the last two games up to this point. WTF?

21 guest 11.21.09 at 8:35 pm

Thunda_Chunky,
My best guess is that he is trying to avoid contact because of his struggles from the free throw line.  Maybe somehow that is throwing him off.  Don’t really know though.  Missing inside shots leads to shooting more outside shots, something we can’t afford right now.

22 Garvey 11.21.09 at 8:35 pm

It makes you wonder if Jordan would still be doing the no 4th quarter nonsense with Brand had Speights not gotten hurt

23 Ed R. 11.21.09 at 8:39 pm

I don’t understand how a guy can SG/SF in the NBA and be such a piss poor FT shooter as Iggy is. I was arguably the worst basketball player ever and even I could make free throws at 85-90%.

24 Bobby in Boston 11.21.09 at 9:04 pm

I’m following this game online. The Sixers seemed to hanging in pretty well. Don’t you guys who are watching this game have anything to say about what we’re doing right at the moment?

25 The Greek 11.21.09 at 9:13 pm

Thank god for Brand being on our team,  I love the way that he is playing now.   I love those hard fouls, unlike any we have seen from Sammy over the years.

26 Thunda_Chunky 11.21.09 at 9:46 pm

Make them stop shooting…. When will the Sixers learn that they SUCK when it comes to shooting the ball? When?…

27 deepsixersuede 11.21.09 at 10:05 pm

Iggy: News Bulletin; This is now Elton!s team so swallow your pride and your end of game one on one moves and get him the ball or run the offense.

28 The Real Rob 11.21.09 at 10:38 pm

Iguodala is too much of a cry baby.  He is clearly demonstrating fake toughness.  Also, great job by Thad’s part to at least bother LeBron.  Had Iguodala showed up offensively, who knows what the outcome might have been.  And Elton Brand is the man!

29 tk76 11.21.09 at 10:57 pm

Really enjoyable game for a loss.  Happy with the effort.

But I’d like to see a shot chart from the 4th quarter.  I’m almost used to the small ball, but I think 85% of the shots taken were contested 19-23 foot jumpers.  Absolutely no penetration.  I’m sure some credit for this goes to defense by the Cavs, but you have to take it to the rim.

30 tk76 11.21.09 at 11:07 pm

In the 4th the Sixers took 13 jumpers outside of the lane.  made 1.

Again, good defense by the Cavs shutting down the lane and keeping the ball out of the post, but uit gives the Sixers something to learn.

I guess at least they did not embarrass themselves, and looks like Brand is really back to being a solid contributor.

31 tk76 11.21.09 at 11:15 pm

Of course by the 4th many of the players were playing 40+ min in a back to back… that leads to settling for jumpers since you no longer have your legs.  Missed jumpers too.

32 deepsixersuede 11.22.09 at 9:42 am

I would like to give the soft white kid some props; I, along with most of us I believe, had a M.Bonner type role envisioned for J.Smith. But with this group off our bench , especially when Marreese is healthy , a physical, active, Reggie Evans type player is needed badly and the last few games he really seems to be bringing that. His hard fouls, jump out double teams and screens down the other end are just what this team needs, he is playing very M.Iavaroni-ish.

33 tk76 11.22.09 at 10:34 am

Agree.  Smith has been really aggressive for a guy coming off a knee injury.  I wish he was better on the boards, but otherwise really brings it.

34 Garvey 11.22.09 at 12:07 pm

Looking at Elton Brands games this year…Every game he has played 32 or more minutes he has had a very solid or good game and against the Cavs i think he showed that he didn’t like Eddie Jordans softness comments, not verbally like Iggy or Thad(who also played nicely against LBJ) but with his play.

Also I think Iguodala’s “I worked on my jumpshot all summer” Is like when the Jazz would say Kirilenko put on 20 pounds each summer…complete BS. I also have a small problem with Iggy not taking it upon himself and guarding LeBron, but maybe thats just me. It also seems now more than ever Iggy is proving that he can never be a teams number 1 offensive option.

If Lou Will could only play some…SOME defense. Memphis game was an anomaly because Mike Conley’s scoring has been  Duhonish inept this year and Conley still blew by him twice in the closing minutes
