Sixers vs. Miami: What to Expect?

Sixers showed again that they are capable of playing up to the competition by hanging with the short-handed Cavs on Friday.  Iguodala brought his A game against LeBron and Brand had a bit more life in his old body.  Will we see a repeat performance?

The game was competitive with the positive result of a draft-supporting loss.  I’d be okay with more games like that.

I’d also like to see Jodie Meeks play.  Can we see what the hell we traded for please?

This is your game thread.

Willie getting minutes over Meeks is my main reason for wanting our coach gone. Want to see something funny? Go to Draftxpress and look at Aminu!s profile and check out his “worst case scenerio”. Dannie, does our organization target somebody in this draft and go get him, or just settle, as usual?

  2. jjg says:

Meeks, the latest struck match in the gaseous emission known as the 76ers organization.  A willing gunner (and nice FT stroke) without versatile game; no Rex Chapman.  If he doesn’t stick with Sixers, will probably dominate a Lexington Over 30 league in 10 years, but only if suede refs.

  3. Dannie says:

JJG - Pretty much sounds like you are describing Willie.  As much as  you praise the dude and try to hype him up he is nothing more than a very nice guy, a team player (I guess) whose only real contribution is shooting the ball (missing a lot more than he makes) and not turning the ball over (because he doesn’t pass, he pretty much just shoots, so turnovers aren’t ever an option).

We want to see Meeks because this is a lost season and he is his a young player on the Sixers that is an unknown on the NBA level and we gave up a 2nd round pick for the kid.  I’d like to see if he is capable of doing what Marcus Thornton is doing in New Orleans (similar player) if given an opportunity.

Hell at the end of the day Willie will not be here much longer so someone has to replace him right?  Meeks seems to fit that bill in many respects.

  4. Dannie says:

Suede - That is pretty funny.

  5. Dannie says:

Suede - I can’t answer that question.  Depends who is running the team.

If Stefanski and crew are still in office than I expect they will just draft where they are and take the player they have at the top of their board.

From what I’ve seen the Sixers aren’t an aggressive player in the draft in terms of stockpiling picks and building the team quickly via drafting many players.  They take who is there when they draft and hope for the best.

  6. deepsixersuede says:

Jumpin, nothing personal with Willie, I agree with Dannies! rational. We can!t waste this chance to see our young guys and get a read on who to keep this summer. If Meeks shows well, maybe we go big in the draft, he is on a similar level of Ellington, Thornton and maybe Morrow, who didn!t even get drafted. By the way, it looked like Jody was getting froze out a little bit when he was in there, some Willie love by his teammates ?

wooo yeah we are losing! come one john wall / evan turner! One disturbing thing I heard from ryan rissuelo on the nba today podcast was that a rival gm rang E.S about trading for thad and speights before the deadline and he was told that they were not touchable and he didn’t want to have any converstaion regarding them.
Dannie i know u saw that game against dallas that new york won ;) we are only 2 games out of the fourth spot! I’m excited.

  8. Dannie says:

Tim – I did see that.  We definitely need the teams below us to help out a bit.  I am pretty sure the Sixers will keep losing and doing their part.  They have completely given up playing at defense.

  9. Dannie says:

I didn’t see the pregame presser.  Did Jordan explain why he started Kapono in the second half?

  10. TT32 says:

Yet another disappearing act by Iggy and Brand. From where I’m sitting we have to package one of them and our 1 to move and draft  Turner. We get our starting 2 with Jrue. Lou who was hot for a week as usual has cooled which proofs he is a 3rd guard, spark plug. That’s It! And I don’t know what to do with Young he is so frustrating.

  11. tk76 says:

I don’t see the Sixers dropping to the 4th worse record, or even bottom 6.  Everyone s in serious tank mode.  Other than the Kings, all of the bottom 10 teams have lost 8 or 9 of their last 10 games.

They will lose most games, but look at all of the games they have a shot at winning:

The Sixers face NJ, NY X 2, Chi, Mil X 2, Cha X2, Tor, Det, Mia, Mem, Mia and then Orl the last game (likely resting Howard.)

That is 13/16 games against teams close to 500 or worse.  It would take monumental tanking to avoid winning at least 4 more games…  and they would need to do worse than that to get in the bottom 5 (and have a good chance of winning a top 3 pick.)

  12. tk76 says:

Ultimately, the 5 game win streak cost them a legit shot at a top 3 pick- which is realistically their only shot at turning this franchise around in the next few years.

  13. deepsixersuede says:

tk, with all these teams with cap room this summer, there is a good chance Iggy becomes a bigtime commodity if the stars, for the most part, stay put. I think this summer is more key for this teams future than the draft even. Ex.]  Iggy for a young player and a couple picks].

  14. Dannie says:

Tk76 – Of those remaining teams only the Knicks, Nets and Detroit are 100% out of the playoffs.

Memphis would need a sick run and help from Portland to get in currently sitting 9th but I think they will still fight hard to win games down the stretch.

The other teams are all middle to bottom playoff teams that will be playing hard down the stretch for positioning/securing a spot.

Besides that I think the Sixers could lose every game especially since the Nets always play them tough AND have something to play for (not breaking the Sixers record).

The Knicks can beat anyone (see Mavs blowout) when they feel like it, and the Sixers are basically playing just like them right now with no defense and relying on scoring.

And I don’t think Stan van is a rest his players type of coach going into the playoffs unless someone is hurt, especially if they aren’t play at a high level going in.  Even if they do rest some guys their JV team can still beat the Sixers.

I think there is still hope that the Sixers will at least do their part by losing most of their remaining games.  I think the question is more so can a team or two below them go on a little run to help out.

  15. Dannie says:

Oh and TK did you miss Meeks getting early burn and Jason Kapono starting the second half?  Yeah, I think the full out tanking is in play right now so give the Sixers some credit for getting it done for us!  LOL

  16. jjg says:

Dannie & suede,  Your Kentucky puppy will probably play in next 16; watch him piddle all over the floor.  Guy had 1 strong college season; if he didn’t bingo a 50 game, would’ve been picked lower than 41.

As for comparisons to Green - one’s a man, one’s a boy.  Drop a note when Meeks accumulates 3800 pts, 800 rebounds, 700 assists despite major knee surgery early in career.

Dannie, I know who Willie is and I’m proud to call him a Sixer.  The rest of roster?  Not so much.  It’s about more than ‘wins & losses’ for me.  7 years of environmental craziness (6 head coaches) certainly won’t optimize player production.

  17. tk76 says:

I certainly don’t mind “focusing on player development” from here on out.

These are some player combo’s that will help their lottery odds:

    PF/C:  Speights/Thad or Smith/Thad or Speights/Smith
    PG/SG:  Jrue/Meeks, Jrue/Lou(too small)

Maybe EJ will go back to giving Kapono some more minutes at PF?  Like he did before there was any question of tanking.
