Sixers vs. Nets: Bounce Back Game

by Dannie

0-5 Nets should be an easy target for the the Sixers coming off the drubbing the Celtics put on them.

There is really NO reason to over analyze this game.  The Nets will be without:

  • Devin Harris
  • Yi Jianlian
  • Keyon Dooling
  • Chris Douglas-Roberts
  • Jarvis Hayes
  • Tony Battie

This team is easily the least healthy team in the NBA right now and it will stay that way for a couple weeks.  The expected starting line?

  1. Rafer Alston
  2. Courtney Lee
  3. Terrence Williams
  4. Eduardo Najera
  5. Brook Lopez

Am I overlooking the Nets?  Damn straight.  This unequivocally should be a win.  This should be a blowout.  Period.

Now I fully understand what “should” happen doesn’t always follow true.  And with this team that’s even more the case.  Let’s see of they come out and take care of a severely undermanned team that wasn’t even that good to start with.

Will the Sixers Blowout the Nets This Time?

Speights is HORRIBLE defensively.  He isn’t even putting up any fight in the post against Lopez.

2 guest 11.06.09 at 7:46 pm

Yea Dannie.  Just imagine Lou playing Devin Harris.  That’s a scary thought.

3 Dannie 11.06.09 at 7:47 pm

It’s ridiculous that the Nets are in the game right now.  Every time I watch this team I lose more and more confidence in this team.

4 Dannie 11.06.09 at 7:53 pm

OMG Speights just got posted up by Trenton Hassell.  This is a Joke.

5 Dannie 11.06.09 at 8:32 pm

We seriously can’t stop Trent Hassell right now.  I can not stand to watch this.

6 guest 11.06.09 at 8:59 pm

Dannie, one of our strong points this year was supposed to be rebounding.  We aren’t getting out-rebounded…
But I’m confused why our coaching staff has the lineup of:
-Williams
-Carney
-Kapono
-Speights
-Green

With 8 minutes to go.  Meanwhile Hassell and Lopez are killing us on the offensive glass and in the paint.

7 Dannie 11.06.09 at 9:30 pm

Where is the 80+ million dollar man here late in a close game?

8 The Greek 11.06.09 at 11:22 pm

We have got to be the worst 3-2 team in the history of the game.  We should have smoked these guidos from Jersey.

9 deepsixersuede 11.06.09 at 11:34 pm

If Thad isn!t going to defend with any intensity [Hassel?] than I would like to see one of our shooters [Kapono, Carney(if hot) ] in with the starters. Iggy at least attempts to get physical and goes after a big rebound when needed but Thad!s softness can!t be dismissed unless he becomes a lethal scorer. The party line, ” a nice Sixer!s win” was sickening to listen to by our announcers and postgame live guys except for Donyell , who seems to try to keep it real.

Ok…after not having seen the game and returning home, this box score is dumbfounding to look at.

The Nets dont have: Devin Harris, Yi Jianlian, C Douglas Roberts (playing great so far this year), and Trenton Hassell drops a freaking 17 and 12?  And Bobby Simmons has his first half decent game against professional competition since he was on the Clippers against us?

And why did Brand only get 19 minutes…he had no foul trouble.  I am confused.  This is a team we should be blowing out…wow.

11 The Real Rob 11.07.09 at 1:58 am

Not having Brand back in the game confused me too.  But since Jordan kept him out too long, he might as well rest this one and prepare for a grueling week in terms of 5 games in 7 nights, starting with Sunday’s game against the Pistons.  That team certainly lacks the frontcourt!  Then Monday is a game with the Suns (who by the way beat the Celtics, wow!).  Wednesday, the Sixers face these same exact Nets, but in NJ.  Next Friday is a game against the Jazz.  The following Saturday, the Sixers are going to play the Bulls at Chicago.

However, it was very disturbing that the Sixers kept it a close game with a shorthanded Nets.  Our young guys better understand that there is no place for complacency in this league.  Complacency can cost a team a couple of games, games in which would make a difference for the highest seed, maybe that 4th seed!

The only good thing about tonight was the Sixers’ bench.  Kapono is WAAY better than Korver and a bit more clutch (along with a ring with Miami).  Ivey’s energy really helped the Sixers in that 2nd quarter.  Green is underrated defensively, but if he works on that mid-range game, that will help the team a lot.  Carney has the length to bother people, along with that perimeter shot.  Speights could be the Sixers’ successor to “lunchpailing” Evans, but with a much better offensive game.  Plus, it is great to see Smith nicely recovered and to prove to others that big white guys can play PF or C with ease!

GO SIXERS!! (KEEP THAT MOMENTUM GOING!!)

12 The Real Rob 11.07.09 at 2:00 am

Also, the Sixers must take better care of the ball.  These turnovers are really hurting their chances of improvement and stress the need for some kind of true veteran PG, whether it be a starter or a guy coming off the bench.  Iggy handling the ball too much has my stomach clenching a bit.

13 Dave T 11.07.09 at 3:01 am

Real Rob – I’m a pretty glass is half full type guy in general, so I hate to be the Scrooge to your post…but I really think it’s time to drop all 4th seed discussion out of the window.  Hell will freeze over before that happens. There is no way we are even in the ballpark of the discussion for that high of a seed.  Aside from the fact that we just aren’t that good…the Atlanta Hawks ARE.  And given the play of Arenas, Blatche and Haywood so far, when the Wizards get Jamison back they worry me, and I pencil them in as the automatic 5 seed.   Let’s worry about, say, being a .500 team before tossing out 4th seed and playoff projections for this year.

Also, before you anoint Speights as our new Regge “the bucket and pail” Evans guy, perhaps Speights might want to, as other posters previously mentioned, learn to play some defense….and this is coming from one of the biggest Speights supporters from the time before we even drafted the guy.   He can rebound though.

The Sixers starters are making playing basketball more complicated than it should be. You watch them set the offense up and they run a play it goes aray more time than it goes right..In the begining of the game the starters can’t make a simple basket. The only starter in the begining  on the game who looked comfortable shooting was Lou Williams.  Elton Brand and Thad are hurting the starting lineup. We should sub them for better shooters from the bench. Holiday should be getting 15 to 20 min. a night.  Jordan is a knucklehead if he doesn’t start playing Holiday more consistantly. The faster he learns the sooner the Sixers will benifit. The Sixers Box Scores does not reflect how bad our starters play together.

15 deepsixersuede 11.07.09 at 7:52 am

DaveT., I know you can!t see the games and overall I have been disappointed, for the most part, but the one thing that bodes well thus far is the under control play of L.Will, a big question heading into this season. Ex: Elton posts up below the elbow, gets doubled and kicks it out to a wide open L.Will. at the key and instead of taking the jumper, L.Will. pump fakes to draw a man and drops the ball back in for a repost, a beautiful thing we wouldn!t have seen last year. I remember Danny doing a post last year saying L.Will. could possibly be a T.Parker type of p.g. .He isn!t at that level but is playing a similar style. He is rebounding, shooting a high percentage, and may lead the league in ass./ turn. . Defensively he needs work but I have been pleasantly surprised. I am resigned to the fact Elton will probably be a Tyrone Hill type player for this team, a 10 to 15 pt. and 6 to 10 reb. guy who still is valuable on the defensive end, he is constantly talking and getting the bigs [Marreese,Sam,Jason] in proper position. But Thad has to become Iggy!s 2nd banana for us to reach a 4 or 5 seed, something I am less confident in than I used to be.

16 tk76 11.07.09 at 8:19 am

Sorta knew the 1st half of this season would be ugly, but still hard to watch or like this team.  But at least they have beaten 3 bad teams instead of losing.

Sticking to positives, Lou with 18/9reb/6asst and zero TO’s.  He gets my Andre Miller-Lite player of the game.

BTW, anyone notice how Sam and Thad both passed the ball right to the other team.  No Sixer was in 10 feet.  Not sure if that is a sign of the offense still out of wack or just low BB IQ.

17 jkay 11.07.09 at 1:18 pm

another game I’m glad i didnt watch

BUMP

18 The Real Rob 11.07.09 at 1:38 pm

Dave T–

Let me explain about that 4th seed.  I said “Maybe” depending on what the goal is for the Sixers.  The last two seasons, this team has lost a lot of games due to complacency and blowing those April games, in addition to those typical slow starts that most teams go through.

The Wizards have not convinced me just yet, it’s more hype than anything else.  Plus, that team keeps losing players– Jamison and Miller.  Well, this month Eddie Jordan and his squad will play the Wiz this month in the one year ”anniversary” of his firing.

The Hawks impress me and I think will more than likely get that 4th seed.  I wonder though, will the Sixers still have that team’s number like last year, especially with our “Atlanta” natives playing huge against them.  That season series could make a difference.

But right now, I am in wait and see mode with the Sixers!!

19 bski 11.07.09 at 3:30 pm

OK, last night’s was the first game I’ve watched this season.  What a mess.

At first I thought maybe it was me.  Thought maybe I was suffering from a baseball hangover or something.  Then I slowly realized that it was some really bad basketball by the home team that was causing my suffering.

Checking in here, I realize that I’m not alone, that it was them and not me.  I was thinking the same things right along with you guys.  Trenton Hassell?  Bobby Simmons?  Are you kidding?

I mean, we barely beat a winless team with only 9 healthy bodies (which was cut to 8 after Lee went out) that had to use most of their bench players for major minutes?  And we were fist pumping and chest bumping and screaming to the skies when we made a few plays down the stretch to pull it out?  And Brand sat for approx. the last 18 minutes of the game, apparently because we were down when he came out, we made a run and regained the lead while he was out, and EJ liked the way the unit on the floor was playing so he kept Brand out the rest of the way?  OK I guess, but what does that mean for Brand and for us the rest of the way?

Good Grief!  Someone please tell me (lie to me if you must) that things will get better.

20 The Real Rob 11.07.09 at 3:39 pm

bski– Everything is going to be alright! (Wink wink)  It’s only November thus far!

Does anyone know if Antonio Daniels is still available?  The Sixers could use him as a bench player as a backup for Lou.  Plus, he played for Eddie Jordan and has Championship experience from his time with the Spurs in 99.

21 Pete 11.07.09 at 3:50 pm

gotta give this team some time this season – new coach, new scheme, all that. I think Dannie’s rule is usually 20 games in before freaking out.

they do look like crap – but have beaten the teams they should beat and lost to the teams they should lose to.

I’m curious to see how we play against ATL, DET, MIA, TOR, DET, CHI and WAS

22 jjg 11.07.09 at 4:42 pm

A sign in Wachovia Center corridor reads:  Abandon all hope ye who enters here.  Just sayin’.

23 jkay 11.07.09 at 8:31 pm

Pete’s right. i remember last year and how badly it sucked for the first 20 games. they’re not a vry good eam but i doubt they will end up this pathetic.

dssuede: the word i would use to describe Lou’s surprising offensive performane is ‘efficient’. interesting how we thought he was anything but. good call on Donyell, he’s the only one that talks sense there.

i think we should just let it play out.

ugh Trent Hassel? ugh

24 tk76 11.08.09 at 1:19 am

This will probably be yet another weak start -> strong finish season.  But not a very likable squad IMO.
… then management will blow more smoke next summer about how they are turning the corner.  And next sumer  everyone else will be making moves while Comcast are sitting back and trying to find a way to pay Brand and Iguodala nearly 30M and praying someone will buy the team from them.

Sorry to pile on, but they are a bad franchise in a city with better option.  Sometimes sort of wish I wasn’t such a pro-hoops fan- I’m that down on this franchise right now.

25 The Real Rob 11.08.09 at 1:59 am

Pete’s right about handling the sub-0.500 teams of last season thus far.  Now the Sixers have to figure out ways to beat the elite.  Last year, only that win over the Lakers was the only qualified one!

(Also, check out the stats by Lou in that game!)

26 jjg 11.08.09 at 10:04 am

Dannie,  Not to split hairs, but “bounce back” implies a return to a customary level of accepted play.  Most customers, present or potential, realize that the 9-man Nets, the Knick-nacks and the antlerless Bucks represent little in the way of resistance.  The only substantial “bounc[ing]” done by the 76ers so far has been in the announced home attendance figures.

27 The Real Rob 11.08.09 at 10:57 am

This week will be intriguing for the Sixers because this is a week where they will be playing many games in many nights, more like a typical schedule.  Our next five opponents are:

11/8–@ Detroit
11/9–vs Phoenix
11/11–@ New Jersey
11/13–vs Utah
11/14–@ Chicago

How do you guys think this team will fare in these five games?  I am very much looking forward to the Phoenix game if you love high scoring games and they played the Suns twice in the preseason in some great games, although it was a split for both teams.  Let’s see if our Sixers can go 4-1 or possibly 5-0, if they want to look for consistency earlier, this should be the earliest path to start.  I think 3-2 would be my guess for a worst case scenario.

GO SIXERS!!

28 jjg 11.08.09 at 11:19 am

Rob,  You are the sunniest.  2-3 would be par.  3-2, overachievement.  There’s real potential of a 5-game skid if they slip up in Jersey, probably the only game of the five in which they’ll be favored by oddsmakers.

29 Dannie 11.08.09 at 11:31 am

JJG – Regarding bounce back I wasn’t talking on a macro level.  Just a micro level of coming back to win a game after being dismantled the previous.  Also, if you want to take it a step further bounce back could also refer to the short trend of the Sixers only winning games against perceived weaker foes.  Nothing more.
