Let’s face it – the Sixers suck and are not winning this game. They’ll be lucky to get out of it without losing by 20. The Knicks now have more wins than the Sixers, and we are nearing 100% draft talk territory.
That is, once the Iverson hype and excitement falls off and people realize as hard as he is going to play and try to win, we still are going to lose most nights for a variety of reasons.
Before we get to the game, let’s bring to light some disturbing comments by the head jackass.
What the F is Wrong with Eddie Jordan?
In response to Elton Brand’s unhappiness with coming off the bench and limited minutes:
“It doesn’t really affect me,” Jordan said, before smiling and adding, “I think he told Jrue to go up and block the dunk.” ~ Eddie Jordan
Really? That’s your response to a legit concern of a veteran and key player? Last I had heard Brand and Jordan have not talked about this directly either. My god. This is how a coach is supposed to lead? He basically said Brand is no longer a starter for the Sixers unless he has no choice due to injuries, and it doesn’t matter how he plays. “IN FACT, if you play well in your bench role it will only strengthen my decision to keep it this way. You can not win, Elton, so pipe down.”
About Iguodala’s injury and status for tonight’s game:
“With Willie scoring 26 last night and adding Allen, maybe, into the starting lineup, that’s not a bad fall-back plan.” ~ Eddie Jordan
Yup, that’s a winning fall-back plan if I ever saw one. Rely on a guy who openly says he isn’t in shape, is rusty and hasn’t really played consistent basketball in how long? 6 months (per Iverson himself)? And a dude who has been one of the worst starting shooting guards in the NBA the last three seasons.
Some new insight into Eddie Jordan’s master defensive plan. Jordan asked Iverson if he can play a match-up zone. Iverson and Jordan’s response:
“He (Iverson) says, ‘Coach, with 14 years in the league I played matchup somewhere I just don’t remember.’ So that’s going to be good for us, too, in that way to help us save his legs a little bit, mix up some man and zone.” ~ Eddie Jordan
Yup, that’s the point of defense. To rest. Brilliant!
I think we have no choice but believe that this dude is just stuck on stupid (always has been?).
I can’t even begin to respond to that quote. “Save his legs?” Does he think in a zone guys just stand in one spot and never move? I guess that tells us how HE teaches HIS zone defense.
On top of that, Jordan acknowledged that the Sixers have done a poor job defending the three. Yet his defensive strategy to combat that is a “you don’t have to move or run around” match-up zone.
That didn’t work against two of the worst three point shooting teams in the league. Tonight we face the 8th best. Genius!
This guy really knows how to coach and win basketball games.
Your man is doing a hell of a job, Stefanski, stick with him. I am pretty sure he can get us to 15 loses in a row – at least – if Detroit and Golden State cooperate. Next 6 games:
- Denver
- Detroit
- Houston
- Golden State
- Cleveland
- Boston
Sarcasm aside, I don’t think I have been this down on the Sixers ever.
On to the Game
- Jrue (strained right rotator cuff) ran some three-man weave, but didn’t scrimmage at practice and is out again tonight.
- Andre Iguodala (sprained right ankle) didn’t practice, just did some light spot shooting and will be in the starting line-up tonight.
- Iverson is starting for sure, and Jordan said he envisions him starting the rest of the season. Meaning we will see a backcourt of Lou and A.I. when he returns.
I’ve come to the conclusion that his is the starting line-up for tonight is: Iverson, Dala, Young, Brand and Dalembert.
Eddie Jordan confirmed he would start a backcourt of Iverson and Andre Iguodala. ~ Kate Fagan
That tells me Willie is back where he belongs or he is hurt (sprained right hand) considering he finished the Bobcats game and practiced yesterday I am thinking it’s the former. And even though Jordan completely dismissed Brand’s displeasure he will get the start tonight. Has the coach found some sense?
Doubt it.
Allen Iverson
Quick quote:
“I told him for 14 years I heard how you hate coming out of the game. Now they’re telling me you’ve got to get him out if he’s tired. He’s going to tell me. The first time I’m coaching Allen Iverson, I am not taking him out until he tells me.” ~ Eddie Jordan
Hmmm, what is the likelyhood Iverson tugs his shirt to come out of the game?
Anyway.
Can the little guy put this struggling team on his shoulders – again?

Hope so. Doubt it. Can’t wait to watch first hand.
One thing I hope doesn’t get lost in all this…
If the Sixers keep losing, don’t forget they were 5-15 before Iverson and losers of 9 straight.
If you want to go back further they are 10-30 in their last 40 games all without Iverson. That means they have now gone 5-15 under two different coaches. If you look at the start of last season they were 9-11 in their first 20 so again they were a below average team and had yet another coach. This team (current cast of scrubs) has NEVER been good. Don’t forget it.
So don’t blame Iverson if results stay consistent – aka they still suck.
On the flip side, if they improve don’t be so quick to give him all the credit either. While I am sure he would be a contributing factor, how much would need to be analyzed (tangible and intangible) for proper allocation of credit?
I am heading down to the game. I’ll be in section 101, row 15 so I will be close to the action and front and center. I’ll take some photos with my phone and post when I get back tonight.
Enjoy the emotion and excitement prior to the bloodbath (hope I am wrong).
I will.

It is amazing what a terrible coach EJ is – what do you think ES tells himself at night to rationalize?
That he is a great coach with horrible players.
I think it’s that simple. Eddie Jordan comes off even more arrogant than Andre Iguodala does to me. He has not once talked about his performance as the coach or taken one iota of blame for the teams horrible start.
I wish the Philly media was as tough as the fans are. The media in this town sucks. They never ask the right or tough questions. They are suck ups and fence riders who constantly get scooped by out of town outlets.
Typically makes for predictably boring interviews and post game press conferences.
Iverson’s line tonight….
5-12, 16 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds, 1 steals, 4 turnovers
In the quotes you ticked off, EJ insults his highest paid player, demonstrates that D is an afterthought – despite his team playing among the worst D in the league, says that he is counting on scoring from a career point per shot player, basically commits to a backcourt consisting of 2 mirror image undersized bad defending shoot-first PGs, and for the capper, abdicates his coaching decisions to AI. Incredible! I really don’t think it matters how well AI plays, this team is lottery bound.
Dannie,
Since the natives are restless (to say the least), think there’s any chance at all that ES will have another conference call with the bloggers? I hope so because then you could ask the right and/or tough questions I know you’re dying to ask.
I’d love to hear his answers.
BSKI – Won’t happen. Not right now for a couple reasons:
Stefanski was on 610 with Eskin the other day and Howard, while typically horrible and tends to be a prick sometimes carries that attitude over in a interview with a non Eagles guest. He asked some decent questions but still not good enough.
We as bloggers tend to do more in-depth statistical research than reporters so we can speak directly to on court performance and ask more pointed questions.
Even so I would fully expect Jordan or Stefanski to dance around the tough questions anyway.
But again, they aren’t THAT dumb that they would volunteer themselves to get killed by a bunch of bloggers.
Yeah, didn’t figure there to be any chance. Just popped into my head is all, cause I could picture the whole thing if it did.
<<5-12>>
To dream the impossible dream, Pete. No way his percentage is that good. He doesn’t have his legs under him. He may shoot well early off adrenalin, but once his legs go, there goes the percentage. And he’ll come out after he gets tired, not before.
I contend he will lead the team in shots taken.
My problem with bringing AI back had less to do with AI himself than the fact that i was sure it would mean seeing AI and Lou starting together when he comes back. My fears are confirmed. We will get some steals, but no stops on defense. We will also have the smallest starting backcourt i can think of offhand.
HERE WE GO SIXERSSS
Sixers are jacked. Most energy i’ve seen in a while, nice block Sam!
iverson obviously a little nervous not taking that layup and missing two chip shots. looks willing to pass at the moment, lets see how long that lasts
Euro Step…Thanks Ed. I always just called is the Wade/Manu move.
Brand going overboard with the C-Spoon pump fakes.
iguodala going overboard on that 1 and 4 flat at the end of the quarter, Iverson HAS to have the ball at the end of quarters for the 6ers
Whether or not you agreed with the move to bring A.I. in… admit that you are enjoying the game so far!
6 Blocks for Sammy in the 1st half alone. Great stuff from him.
I cannot believe that I just shelled out $175 dollars a month ago for NBA League Pass so I could have access to every single NBA game, specifically the Sixers, every night. And this game which I have been more ridiculously pumped for than any other this year…for whatever reason, is not available on my tv. Fucking a.
Is the energy of this game through the roof? Frenzied crowd? Standing-O that lasted 5 minutes long?
Dave T, go to

It’s working right now, sometimes it doesn’t.
game over, 76ers completely stopped scoring
I wish someone within the Sixers organization realized that Jr Smith can kill you if you don’t guard him.
Zack – Thanks for the link. Tried it, found the game, but when I clicked it said “invalid code” and that I needed the right password or something. Oh well.
From watching ESPN gamecast (I really need to get a life) it looks like we had a pretty crappy 4th quarter.
Morty – Nice post on #4 haha. I think we’re all in shellshock from his behavior.
From the box score only, I’m stunned that Iverson only got 11 shots but played 38 minutes…was he passive and a bit rusty out there tonight, or was he just trying to fit in and show he can be a team player and fed Iguodala the ball?
THE BENCH DROPPED A WHOPPING 2 Pts!!!!! WOW. Can’t win when your 2nd unit is offensively inept. 1-15 Awesome
Sixers played relatively well defensively(Still a bit 2 many uncontested 3s but that isn’t new) until that collapse, and the mark of bad coaching is the complete inability to adjust to what Denver was doing, and allow them to blow it open.
Eddie Jordan – Coach of the Year.

Also getting to the line 9 times wont cut it.
Thanks for the link Garvey.
Pretty sad state of affairs when my highest hopes for this season are for Iverson to have a retro 40 point burst of scoring sometime this season and have a magical air about him once again for a few nights. The fact that I am watching the Sixers purely for an individual accolade, and the slim hope that EJ may wake up from his crack-rock binge and start playing his highest paid player, instead of ostracizing him from the team as a reward for Brand’s hard work and being professional, is not a good sign of the state of our team.
I am just waiting for the the major hoops websites to start making us the butt end of the “everything is wrong with this team” jokes. ESPN’s NBA Podcast guy Ryan Russilo (who I really like so far this year, he runs a good show), has already poured the hatred on our team calling Eddie Jordan out for his idiocy and how inept we are. And deservedly so.
This team simply cannot and does not defend the perimeter. It’s a shame! Eddie Jordan is such a looser, and the bad part about it is that with AI coming back there’s no way ES fires him. I hated the hire, I still hate it and can’t root for this team with him as the coach, he’s clueless.
We aren’t going to win any games until we learn how to stop teams from shooting open 3 pointers. Afflalo kept them in the game in the first half, and Billups/Smith got it done in the 2nd half all with the 3 pointer.
Oh yeah. Expect Dannie to be talking up Ty Lawson. haha. Great game and I can now clearly see why we should have taken him. Extreme quickness, willing defender, and would have fit our team perfectly. Things a lot of us said before the draft are now coming true.
I also am a bit tired of Jordan sarcastic ass remarks, and his general attitude toward what is going on. With the talent the Sixers have, to me this 10 game slide equates to the Net 18 gamer in terms of the fact the Sixers were expected by the experts to be a 6-8 seed. I may be the only one that feels that way, but This is essentially a roster that went to the playoffs last year with no big core free agency losses, and the young guys with more NBA seasoning.
All of that just points to the coach in my mind, and for whatever reason it seems he’s had a problem with Brand from day 1. I am so done with Jordan man. This guy shouldn’t be coaching in the NBA let alone JUCO or NAIA.
for 3 quarters it was actually a fun game to watch. they came out with energy. Eddie Jordan just did nothing at all. bar bringing in Willie Green who took more bad shots than Iguodala, who was hot for the ist half. well keep playing.
funny seeing AI deferring. very weird!
either he’s taking it slowly or he has really lost a step.
Came down to two things: bench production and where are the fouls being called? Anyway, I admire Iverson’s honesty about not being 100% in game shape. I and the rest of Philadelphia can’t wait to see to him when he is in game shape!
First NBA of any time I caught this season, was broadcast on NBA TV on Comcast down here in DC…
Had a good time watching AI. I don’t really care that they lost, it was fun to see the crowd all jazzed up.
Also, great heave by Iguodala for a shot that doesn’t count! I think he will really benefit from Iverson being back.
Eskin grilled our coach on A.I. getting there a little over an hour before gametime, here we go again!!!! Good news, Willie got less time and our bigs rebounded well.
Stu – I didn’t know there was another Philly fan living in DC on here, we’ll have to start a club.
Jkay – Perhaps Iverson has finally entered the age where he is ready to fulfill the “could have averaged 10 assists per game if he wanted to” era. But, pretty freaking doubtful. Probably a mix of both (Iverson trying to really defer, as well as having lost a step). Either way, it is weird not to have him be a dominant scorer in a game…even on Denver he was tied for the 1st option on offense. I have a feeling though once he plays his rust off and gets back in shape he’ll be a legit 23 ppg scorer again though. Will be fun to watch.
Well another game where you have stretches of Dalembert, Kapono, ivey, carney and will-e green in the game at one time. Who is the go to player in that line up? The ball handler? The post player? 4 guys, 1 idiot and a basketball. Great rotation EJ. Glad to see Ai back to bad the energy in the building could last but only 3 quarters then the Sixers and Eddie Jordan showed up. NBA where “losing 10 straight” happens.
Atmosphere was great and the excitement was there (20+k fans). Same Sixers type of performance. Same result. Glad I went.
Will post something up later. Work is killin’ me right now.
suede: tell you what; i dont know how long it lasts but just him being on the court seems to give them so much more energy. Vintage Sammy was blocking shots like he was a rookie again, Iguodala flying from side to side on defense and chucking up both good and bad shots with less hesitation, Thad was crashing the boards with his partner in crime Brand who would have really killed Denver if he could get some of those bunnies to fall. I hope they keep it up.
That place hasnt been that electric in 3 years of sixers play… That reminded me of a nova game as far as atmosphere goes. Yes Allen was rusty, but he made the others better, Iggy hasnt played that well for a long time… hmm maybe even before AI left? And who cares when he showed up… He knew it was going to be a zoo and was probably trying to avoid it… cant blame him… Let him lace up the kicks and go on the court… Im excited for at least having a pro player to watch for this season…
bubba chuck, I hope he is serious about mentoring the young guys here. Who cares when he shows up? I hope it starts with him caring. He has a chance to repair a lot of wrongs over the past few years and go out on a high note, personally and career wise, so yes, I care when he showed up and hope it was for good reasons.
