We only got a foot in Chicago. You guys have gotten buried this year.

The best thing... my neighbor's New Year's resolution was to get in better shape by shoveling his and my driveway.

I fear the bad trade the most. Brian's analysis showed that the amount of cap relief is not enough to bring in a star player. We would have only the mid-level either way.

Well I've just spent quality time with my snowblower with more yet to come at the rate it's coming down.

This is my optimistic take:

They have more talent then their record indicates. If somehow they can land a star in this draft then maybe the rest of the roster is good enough to build a contender in a few years (sort of like the Hakeem analogy.) Either way, it would be a fun ride.

My pessimistic view is that one of these things happen:

-bad trade that dumps Iguodala without getting value or usable cap space back . If Iguodala is gone then it makes having Brand even more of an issue.

-More wins this year and 3 more years of mediocrity and EJ... and then they blow it up.

I reread the article. I think I read it a while back when you previously highlighted it. It is depressing. Three years of top 5 picks are likely to give us an all star and two starters. I'm not sure I can stomach 3-5 more years of really bad basketball to see how that works out. I'd rather get rid of EJ and continue on our present course. A decent coach could have won 45-50 games with this roster.

"Given that the Sixers had a #3 in 95, a #1 in 96and a #2 in 97 they should have been better. I’d hate to tank and have the same results from that time."

Sure, they should have built a more lasting winner, but they made the 2nd round of the playoffs as early as 98/9 and were in the Finals 2 years later.

I'd take 3 bad years (2010-12) if it mean playoff success and the Finals over the next 5+ years. Certainly better than what I'm expecting with a Brand/Iguodala core (3 more years of 35-25 wins and then blowing it up.)

OK. I thought they drafted him, then traded him for Tim Thomas. Anyway, neither was worth a #2 pick. Given that the Sixers had a #3 in 95, a #1 in 96and a #2 in 97 they should have been better. I'd hate to tank and have the same results from that time.

KVH was not their last top 5 pick, because they traded out of that pick (he was picked by NJ.) they took the #7 pick that season. It would be like saying the Sixers drafted Brad Daugherty when they had traded away their pick for Roy Hinson.

Their last top 5 pick was AI.

Duracorr, have you read:
http://www.82games.com/nbadraft2.htm

I've linked it before. It lists your odds of landing a superstar or bust at every pick. Top 5 picks give you a good chance, but there are lots of busts. Non top 5 picks are rarely stars:

Over 20 seasons
Pick 1: 8/20 are superstars.... 3/20 are busts
Picks 2-5: 11/80 are superstars.... 30/80 are busts
Picks 6-10: 4/100 are superstars.... 40/100 are busts
Picks 11-14: 3/80 are superstars.... 37/80 are busts

Very few players lead teams to the Finals. The goal should be to acquire one of those players, because none are on the roster. So you can either trade for one or draft one.

Neither way easy or a sure thing- but right now they have a legit shot at a top 5 pick, which they have not had in over 10 years (since AI.) It's not a coincidence that they also have not made it past the 2nd round for 8 years.

I really can't think of a strong argument in favor of a playoff push this season. It isn't the job of the players or coaches to tank, it's the GM's job. Trading any combination of Igoudala, Dalembert and Brand would ensure a horrendous finish.
