Dannie, all good points. For what you think about last year, you gotta cover this: why was the 2nd unit so much better than this year's? Surprisingly, it hasn't been covered anywhere (other blogs), but they really helped the Sixers to a lot of wins last year.

Blski, the 2 big problems with Sam being that role player [B.Wallace, Rodman, etc.] is #1] he doesn!t know his limitations; #2] he seems to hurt this team by not knowing his limitations. Last night he comes off the bench and first possession takes an 18 footer above the elbow. I don!t remember the Iavaroni!s,Wallaces and Rodman!s causing their teams problems like him.The closest center to him that I remember winning a title was C. Ray and that was with a great player [R.Barry].

Zack - We'll see over the next 15 games. I fully expect the Sixers to be hurt defensively inside and on the boards with Thad at power forward. And I am not sure how that will translate into more wins.

Also if you notice with Thad at power forward he becomes almost entirely a perimeter shooter offensively. No opportunities to post up (inside threat you mention) and typically his defender plays off him to take away the drive baiting him to take the jumper. I'd love to see him take advantage of his quickness against most power forwards but right now I am not seeing it all that much. Partly because he doesn't get nearly the number of iso opportunities as Iguodala (even though he has a better advantage) and partly because he just doesn't attack as much as I think he should. All I see is jump shot after jump shot.

Also, last night he had 4 steals against a power forward that likes to play beyond the three point line often. (personally if I was the coach of the Wiz I would have emphasized to Jamison to stay in the post and save the perimeter shots for another match up) His ball denial was fantastic and lead to most of those steals. I don't see that happening as much when he is stuck in the paint dealing with predominantly back to the basket power forwards. But like I said we'll see.

Power forwards he will be matched up with:

Jeff Foster

KG

Kenyon Martin

Carlos Boozer or Paul Millsap if Boozer is still hurt.

Zack Randolph

Dirk (twice)

Tim Duncan (twice)

Scola

Luc Richard Mbah a Moute

Boris Diaw

Josh Smith

LaMarcus Aldridge

Al Harrington

I'll have more on "if he’s playing power forward and we win more than we lose, then Thad can play the 4, like last year." Not so much about Thad but about what I really think about "last year."

sfw...I think you might be able to as long as Sammy is the Ben Wallace of the starting 5. Problem is, we aren't close on the other 4 spots. (Well, a healthy Brand = Sheed in terms of overall production, but that's about it.)

Dannie, people who insist that Thad can play the 4 are NOT wrong. In my opinion, if he's playing power forward and we win more than we lose, then Thad can play the 4, like last year. Sure, there are cons, like he's not as big as the other PFs he'll go against, which makes it easier for the other team to score, but I think the overall Thad-at-PF-for-this-particular-Sixers-team package generates more pluses than minuses for this team.

And that clearly showed last night. You make it seem like he was abused all Winson Justice-like by Jamison and Mbah A Moute, but if you take away Jamison's 0-6 from three, Jamison was around 50% FG% going against Thad, which is a "good" Jamison game. He gets that against Al Jefferson. Let's say you use someone else, like Evans - that's only worth about 2~4 points defensively, but you don't gain any rebounding, and offensively you lose both an inside-outside threat, someone who'll create better spacing for this team's guards, who are almost all dribble drive penetrators (Speights is another story).

The cherry on top would be his stealing (4 steals last night), something that would also offset his size disadvantage and is a skill that's absolutely crucial for this poor-shooting Sixers team that relies heavily on fastbreaking for points and wins. And it's not gambling-type of steals that he gets, either, he's just good at knocking the ball away from unsuspecting guys.

suede, the answers are obvious but I do agree with Dave that he plays better when given 28-34 minutes. Unfortunately, unless you have superstars around him, I don't believe that translates into a championship. Don't think you will win a championship building like Detroit(no top 5 star!) with him in the middle.

Dannie, you asked for suggestions on topics for the next few weeks, I am off between christmas and new years, so I am looking forward to it. I would love for you to do a Sammy story; a] can you win with him,b] do his strengths outweigh his weaknesses, etc. because as frustrating as he his to us I can!t imagine having to coach him.

Suede - I think Stefanski already proved he is willing to put out big time money. Even to players that probably aren't even worth that much. In fact he said they aren't completely opposed to going over the luxury tax threshold if it meant being at championship level. So I don't think money even needs to be discussed.

Hell, if you think about it, he basically spent/wasted $6 million on Mo by extending him this season and next season then firing him. I think money played a very small part in not bringing in a new coach this season because then the Sixers would be paying two guys at once.

DaveT., when I think of vanilla, I think of the Spurs, but what do they have ? The coach you just described. He is the leader, the dominent personality, if you will. We may have to go that route with this group of players, that is why E.Jordan wouldn!t be my choice. A.Johnson or Van Gundy seem to more fit the bill. Question though, is this management ready to spend big-money on a big time coach if that is what it takes for this group of guys because I got the feeling E.S. was limited to somebody in the organization taking over because of Mo!s salary.

Zack, I agree with you on Iggy in 2 of the 3 things, good passer and good handle, yes for the most part but disagree on him being [basketball smart]. Thad, I believe , is smarter because he doesn!t try to do what he can!t. I think Elton, when facing the basket, can fill the set up role but with his back to the basket he, to me anyway, has been a passing disappointment, although with more shooters around him he may feel less of a need to force things. What you describe is what I wish Iggy could become but I for one am not confident at the end of games with him in that role yet.
