Well, so far this year is shaping up like last year, with the Eagles being linked to every possible elite WR and thus far with absolutely nothing to show for it. As you have probably heard by now, the Eagles signed versatile FB Leonard Weaver to a 1-year deal. It's clear the market for him wasn't as robust as his agent claimed (imagine that!). Weaver is about as big an upgrade you could hope for at the FB position for the Birds. He can run and will help our atrocious short yardage game, and he can catch a pass out of the backfield, and we know how much McNabb spread's the ball around. This is a move that a lot of fans have suggested, and it looks like it might happen. Philly.com is reporting the agent for FB Leonard Weaver says that he is negotiations with the Birds, and hopes to get something done. Weaver would provide an offensive fullback option we've lacked since Cecil Martin was around. First we heard that the Birds were interested in Jabari Greer which brought up speculation of a Sheldon Brown move to safety. Then, we saw Shawn Springs came in for a visit, and we thought that Brown might be trade bait. Now, with Sean Jones signed, we know Brown isn't moving to safety. Yet, the Eagles continue to look for a corner, and not a corner that would be #4 on the depth chart. According to Philly.com, the Eagles have signed S Sean Jones to a 1-year deal. It is not clear whether or not he will play FS or SS as he has not yet addressed the media. The fact that it is a one-year deal gives me some pause as that is strange for a 27-year old. My guess is that he wants to re-establish himself as the player he was in 2006 (when Sports Illustrated had him on their All-Pro team) and get a much bigger deal in 2010. Just a couple quick notes from this afternoon. The Eagles traded WR Greg Lewis and a 2010 7th round pick to the Patriots for their 2009 5th round pick. This gives the Birds 12 picks in the draft. Hopefully they can use a couple of their 4 5th rounders to trade up into the 3rd round or something. They have the potential to do a lot of wheeling and dealing and lack a couple impact players. Looks like the Eagles have found a replacement for Lito Sheppard. Several outlets are reporting that Shawn Springs is scheduled to visit, and there is a press conference scheduled for tomorrow, presumably to announce his signing. Springs was released by the Redskins to help with the Albert Haynesworth and DeAngelo Hall signings. He would likely be the 4th corner on the team behind Samuel, Brown and Hanson.
