The Phillies released Geoff Jenkins today, who, aside from his double in Game 5.2 of the World Series, was a complete bust. This has already started rumors that the Phillies might look to replace him with recently released Gary Sheffield. Sheffield would provide a right handed bat off the bench, and could spot start against tough lefties. Todd Zolecki reported the Phillies have contacted his agent. I personally think they will just keep Miguel Cairo as the right handed hitter instead of … [Read more...]
Phillies Rumors: Jenkins released, Sheffield an option, Park wins 5th spot
Phillies Rumors: Kendrick and Marson being shopped?
Just a real quick update here... With Kyle Kendrick being sent down to the minors, rumors are out there that he is being shopped for a RH bat off the bench, namely Jeff Baker of the Rockies. I have been of the opinion for well over a year now that Kendrick will never be even an average MLB pitcher. I would trade him for anything that would help the team. On a more interesting note, Todd Zolecki is reporting that the Phillies have had talks with the Red Sox, who are desperate for a … [Read more...]
Phillies Payroll Analysis: 2009-2012

Note: ReclinerGM has a permanent link to an updated Payroll Analysis and Organizational Depth Chart here. There is also an easy access link on the side of our main page. With Ryan Howard's contract on the books, the Phillies are pretty much done with their 2009 roster, unless Nomar does decide to play in 2009. It is clear that the Phillies have a 3-year plan, as they have it set up so that all of their key players are locked in until at least 2011. Here is a look at how the Phillies payroll … [Read more...]
Phillies Lock in Howard: 3 years, $54 million

We're not being too subtle with the 3-year window, are we? Ruben Amaro Jr. ran through the gauntlet of arbitration eligible players without the need for a single hearing, getting the final piece done today by signing Ryan Howard to a 3-year, $54 million deal that will take him through the rest of his arbitration eligible years. I think this is a great move for the Phillies for 3 reasons... No drama. If you thought the fuss over this arbitration hearing was bad, next year would have … [Read more...]
Phillies Rumors: Nomah?
Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports has a couple tidbits on the Phillies today... The Phillies are showing interest in both Nomar Garciaparra and Gabe Kapler as right handed bats off the bench. I would prefer Nomar since he is a better hitter (only 11K in 163 ABs last year) , can play the infield, and because it would give me excuse to break out my Garciaparra Red Sox jersey I bought a decade or so ago. The Phillies aren't interested in Derek Lowe. We already knew that, but Scott Boras … [Read more...]
Phillies Rumors: Pat Burrell Signs with Rays
I don't have much time to write, but I thought I'd get this up for discussion. Pat Burrell signed a 2 year, $16 million contract to be the DH for the team he beat in the World Series, the Tampa Bay Rays. My first impression of this move is that it is a great one by the Rays, and it makes our 3 years, $31 million deal with Ibanez look pretty bad. No way Ibanez is worth twice as much as Burrell. Not even close. If we could have signed Burrell to this deal (and I imagine we could have), we … [Read more...]
Phillies Rumors: Lowe to the Mets?
OK, so that's not really a Phillies rumor, but it affects us, and affects me personally. The rumor, being reported by ESPN, is that the Mets have offered Lowe a remarkably reasonable contract of 3 years, $36 million. Or, the same years, and only $8 million more than we gave the incomparable Adam Eaton. Originally, his agent, Scott Boras, had requested 5 years, $80 million and several teams understandably balked. Lowe was the one player I wanted the Phillies to go after in the off-season, and … [Read more...]
Raul Ibanez on Board: What It Means To the Phillies

Ryan Howard, Alex Rodriguez, Justin Morneau, Miguel Cabrera, Albert Pujols, David Wright, Magglio Ordonez, Lance Berkman, David Ortiz, Carlos Beltran and Matt Holliday. That's a list of the only players that have driven in more runs than the newest Phillie, Raul Ibanez, has in the last 3 years. Ibanez became the first big move of Ruben Amaro's tenure when he signed a 3-year, $30 million deal, officially ending the Pat Burrell era in Philadelphia. Because of this, the first question … [Read more...]
Phillies Rumors: Thursday Winter Meetings Updates
OK - there is entirely too much going on at the Winter Meetings for me to do a post every time I hear or read a rumor. So I'm going to try to keep them all organized here and we'll have one thread for them. Here goes... Update (2:48pm): Jayson Stark reporting that the Phillies are in "hot pursuit" of Raul Ibanez. Sources had said previously that we were his first choice. With the DeRosa deal dead, I imagine the Phillies moved quickly on their 2nd option, Ibanez. He would be a good addition … [Read more...]
Phillies Rumors: Phils Interested in Delmon Young?
At the Winter Meetings, there are constant rumors popping up, and I will try my best to keep up with them while still keeping my day job. The most intriguing rumor I've heard today was the Phillies interest in outfielder Delmon Young of the Minnesota Twins. Young, 23, hit .290 with 10 HR and 69 RBI for the Twins last year. Around this time last year, he was jettisoned by the Rays for Matt Garza and Jason Bartlett. This would be a very interesting move, with valid arguments for and against … [Read more...]
