Top-20 Phillies Prospects for 2011:
#7 Sebastian Valle, C

Basic Info

Age (Opening Day 2011): 20
Height: 6’1”
Weight: 170 lbs
How Acquired: Amateur FA, 2006

2010 Stats

Two numbers stand out for Valle here. First, his 16 HR. That was the highest number for any Phillies player who spent the whole season below AA. It shows significant power considering his small stature. If he fills out, he could be a 20-25 HR guy in the majors. The second number is his OBP, sitting below .300. Valle has poor plate discipline and will need to improve his eye and patience if he wants to be more than an average player in the Majors.

Scouting Report

You get a sense of what kind of hitter he is right now from the stats above. Good raw power, needs to improve patience. He’s also strikes out a good amount and could improve his contact rate.

Valle is a good athlete and has shown improvement defensively behind the plate. He’s not going to be an elite defensive player, but he has a chance to be above average.

What to Look For in 2011

The main thing for me will be to see if he can maintain his power stroke while improving his contact rate. Looking for a rise in BA and OBP. Also, keep an eye on scouting reports from people in the know to see how is improving defensively.

Grades (Out of 10)

Upside – 7

Not an elite talent, but could be an above averave every day catcher.

Production – 6

Good HR and RBI totals, but a .728 OPS leaves a lot to be desired.

Proximity to Majors – 2

The hope is that he will be ready to replace Carlos Ruiz by 2014. They are going to take it nice and slow with Valle.
