Where will you be at 9:57 p.m. tonight? I know where you should be! Planted firmly in front of your TV with the dial tuned to CBS waiting eagerly for the Villanova – Duke game.
I know many of you are Sixers fans, Eagles fans and Phillies fans. But I also know you are basketball fans and sports fans. Well, THE Philly sports event of the night is the Sweet 16 match-up between the Wildcats and the Blue Devils. So let’s get into it…
The Match Up

Duke
I watch a ton of ACC play being a UNC fan so I have seen my fair share of Duke games. I don’t like them obviously because they are like Satan to UNC fans. But I respect them and their coach. They are a very strong team that will present Nova with a number of problems.
Duke is a decent, not great three-point shooting team like most people think. What they do is shoot a ton of them (20.5 per game) and when allowed to shoot uncontested three, they get hot and build leads in a hurry. Now I hear that Villanova doesn’t guard the three very well so I went searching for the numbers. They allow 33.1% from three which is pretty good. If they can keep Duke around that number, they will be in good position to win tonight.
What makes Duke really good, and how they end up pulling away from teams, is their pressure defense in the half court. Because they are rather small and lack a true shot blocker (Henderson is very good in help situations), they compensate with very strong, and more importantly sound, perimeter defense. They force turnovers by having active hands, smart defensive reads and wearing down opponents by not having lapses defensively. This one of my biggest concerns going into the game tonight, and one player can ease my mind with it.
One match-up I think Duke has an advantage is with Scheyer and his size at guard. Ideally you want a quicker player on him to put pressure on him. But that would mean Reynolds, and I can easily see Duke countering that by posting him up. And that is almost a certainty when Reynolds and Fisher are on the court at the same time. Not to mention he can shoot up over the top from the perimeter as well. I am really looking forward to seeing how Jay Wright handles this.
Villanova
Pete and I love Nova. So we obviously have our own bias. Nova is actually just like Duke. They love to shoot the three (18.2 attempts per game), and their offensive is extremely perimeter-oriented lead by Scottie Reynolds and Corey Fisher. The difference compared to Duke is Nova has Dante Cunningham who has turned himself into a good low-post scorer. Over his 4 years he has developed good footwork with his back to the basket, a very nice face-up game where his mid-range jumper is deadly and overall is a polished senior big man.
It’s interesting in that Nova actually doesn’t start two of its best players. The Corey’s (Fisher and Stokes) will play at least 25 minutes a piece off the bench. Fisher is a nice player; he is probably our favorite Nova player, and we think he will be a stud next season. Especially if he continues to work on his perimeter shot which has been very good as of late. Stokes is a flat out sniper. The Sophomore shoots 42.8% from three, has NBA range and can get his shot off quickly. 68% of his shots are threes.
Keys to the Game for Nova
- Scottie Reynolds and Turnovers – This is a major, major, major key for tonight’s game. You will hear the ESPN guys talk about Reynolds’ scoring as the key. It is, and it isn’t. When he is scoring Nova’s offense is as potent as it gets. But Nova has enough quality offensive players to win games when Scottie doesn’t score a ton as well, as evidenced by the first two NCAA tournament games where he’s only scored 19 points on 6-16 shooting. What they won’t be able to overcome are bad decisions and a lot of turnovers from him. Reynolds averages 2.7 turnovers per game. But in Nova’s 7 losses this season he has averaged 4.57 turnovers per game. This point is amplified knowing the type of pressure Duke will put on him all game.
- Corey Fisher and Penetration – I call this the Ty Lawson factor. Duke has had worlds of trouble beating UNC mainly because they can’t seem to stop Ty Lawson from cutting up their defense both in transition and in the half court. Texas came back on Duke in the previous round by using a spread offense and dribble penetration. They went 4 low or pick-and-roll at the top of the key with Varez Ward, and Duke couldn’t stop it. That is exactly the role we need Corey Fisher to play tonight. Jon Scheyer is a smart defender, but he is still slow defensively. Nova will need to take advantage him with their quicker ball-handlers. Also, using Cunningham and Fisher/Reynolds in the pick-and-roll at the top of the key with Stokes and Anderson spotting up should be a vital part of Nova’s offense tonight. Force Duke to decide whether to help off shooters or give up driving lanes.
- Dante Cunningham, Points in the Paint and Duke Foul Trouble – Duke has no one that can handle Cunningham on the block. He is stronger than Singler so anytime they are matched up the ball needs to be inside with Dante. Singler has the propensity to foul good offensive bigs because he is weak defensively. Getting him out of the game with fouls would kill Duke as they lack offensive depth. I also can’t see Zoubek playing much because I can’t see who he will guard on Nova’s roster. They don’t play a center at all so he will be beat with quickness anytime he is on the floor. And Nova plays good team defense against teams with bigger offensive players. Finally if it comes down to a match up of Cunningham vs. Lance Thomas, Nova clearly wins that battle.
- Multiple, Fresh Defenders on Henderson - Gerald has been on fire for like two months now. He has finally gotten (been allowed to be) more aggressive on offense, and he has proven he can take over games. Nova will probably rotate three different defenders on him throughout the night to try and keep him in check. Henderson is a game changer, and I am really looking forward to Corey Stokes taking it as a personal challenge to stop him.
Sixers Angle
As far as the Sixers are concerned, if you a looking for shooters, there will be three in this game to watch. Corey Stokes, Jon Scheyer and Kyle Singler. If you are looking for a point guard, pay very close attention to Corey Fisher (at least another year away from the draft).
Prediction
My bias is with Nova. And I back that up by having them on my bracket winning this game as well. I think it will be a close game decided by a few plays and which team can turn the other over more leading to easy transition baskets.
Nova is coming off a game against UCLA which Jay Wright said was their best 2 halves of basketball all season so you gotta like the way Nova is playing right now and the confidence they will bring into this game. Furthermore, Nova has seen equal and better perimeter defense than what they will face tonight against Duke. UCLA’s guards were quicker and better defensively than Duke’s, and Nova killed them with relative ease. And don’t forget they faced Louisville’s full court man-to-man, in-your-ass pressure defense twice this season. Back in January losing by 1 because of terrible late game free throw shooting and in the Big East tournament because of 23 turnovers and terrible overall shooting. So they have seen pressure defense recently that should prepare them for this game. I look for Nova to carry their strong play against UCLA into tonight’s game culminating in a HUGE win.
This is the game of the night, you better be watching every second of it.
Feel free to comment during and after the game with your thoughts.

I think Nova!s backcourt depth will be the difference; I have Nova falling to Xavier in the next round.Interesting comment by Raftery after L.Fields drove for a layup.” No help coming, this is a straight up defense, you MUST keep your man in front of you”. That kind of accountability would be refreshing for our Switching Sixers.
man Dannie, I came on thinking I would add something, but that is clearly not necessary. nice work.
Jon Scheyer is not an NBA player. You know this. I’m not even sure he’s is a Europe player.
Singler is a great college player, but I don’t see where he fits in the NBA.
Stokes is an elite shooter who needs to develop his all-around game. This will be the most important aspect of the 2010 season (along with the Freshman impact).
speaking of 2010 (and because I’m anxious and need to keep typing)… I wonder what the line-up will look like, especially the front court. We lose Anderson, Clark and Cunningham, but gain 4 elite freshman and McDonald’s All-American transfer Taylor King. Here’s my best guess…
G- Corey Fisher, Jr.
G- Scottie Reynolds, Sr.
G- Reggie Redding, Sr.
F- Antonio Pena, Jr.
F- Mouphtau Yarou, Fr.
Rotation Players
Corey Stokes, G, Jr.
Taylor King, G/F, So.
Dominic Cheek, G, Fr.
Maurice Sutton, F, Redshirt Fr.
Maalik Wayns, G, Fr.
Riding the Bench
Isaiah Armwood, F, Fr. (Redshirt?)
Got a lot of guards, and some problems with big-man depth with Cunningham and Clark gone.
Pete – You know I agree about Scheyer’s pro prospects. But I wouldn’t be surprised to see a team pick him up for a summer league run when he finally comes out to see if he can be an NBA shooting specialist.
With Singler the question is can he defend anyone, particularly NBA small forwards. I don’t think so – at all. With that said I still think he will get drafted just like Tyler Hansbrough will get drafted although he doesn’t project well as an NBA player either.
If Singler was 6-10 instead of 6-8 I think he would be a good mid to late first round pick as a perimeter shooting power forward similar to Troy Murphy.
I just cannot root for these guys.
Root for what guys?
Guys, it seems like the 6!8″ and 6!9″ p.f. has a place in todays N.B.A. . Singler ,to me, seems to be more than a P.Garrity type. Scola,D.Lee, Haslem and Milsap are 4 examples of guys that outwork people on most nights to get 8 boards and I think Singler is a pretty aggressive kid.
Nova’s defense is the best I’ve seen all year. When Duke doesn’t have all three top scorers on the court they can barely get a shot off.
If Nova can put down a few of their open threes they can pull away.
Singler is soft with no post game. P. Garrity is exactly what he is. The stuff you see him doing in college as far as facing up and dribble drive isn’t going to fly in the league. What he can do is catch and shoot from the perimeter.
And again who can he defend? People that say “there is a place…” only talk offense.
dannie – Nova. It’s in my blood from years of hearing shit talking from their prick fans. Not all of their fans, but many of them. I find myself rooting for Nova and Duke to tie somehow.
I went to SJU, btw.
I never knew of the Nova/SJU hatred until college. Grew up in the area and I LOVE both teams (and Temple). not sure how I missed it. Cause they HATE each other.
on the game… Nova’s D has been outstanding, and I can’t believe they are winning by so much with so little from Stokes, Fisher and Anderson.
The guards SUCKED.
As for this game, Nova is controlling the boards, not letting Duke get anything easy, and Duke is missing shots they should make. It’s getting to be blowout territory now…
yeah, could have used Nivins on the 2004 squad.
Dominating performance. Hard to say Nova isn’t a legit title contender.
That is how you play defense!!! And that my friends, is how you make a double team effective!! Congratulations Villanova, beat Pittsburgh this Saturday!
IT’S AWESOME BABY!!!
GO SIXERS!! (I HOPE THEY DVR’d NOVA’s VICTORY!!)
beautiful game just wanted to express my happiness
What a great time for Nova to get their act together. Those two Big East tourney games and the American game must have woken them up. It’s amazing that this team looks better than the Foye, Ray and Lowry team. I guess that’s the difference between the current version of Cunningham versus Will Sheridan.
And Pete, since when did Nova and SJU hate each other? I lived in the area and city for 21 of my 25 years and this is the first I have hear of this. Weird.
Anyone else rooting for a Nova, Lousiville, UCONN and Syracuse Final Four?
Pete: Aside from the freshman impact being the biggest key to the ‘10 season, I’d say Antonio Pena is the other biggie. I LOVE this kid, and think he’s going to be the surprise of the Big East next season.
I remember being surprised at how impressed I was during his freshman year, when I really started watching his footwork.
Pena right now lacks polish, repetitions, and finishing around the basket…but the guy is a total old school throwback kind of big. He gets EXCELLENT positioning when boxing out, is great at sealing his defender in the post, has a very nice array of post moves, and his interior footwork is really several notches up from most big men…and I mean that on a national level. I think he’s barely been talked about this year because of the massive improvement that Cunningham added to his game the past two years…but with him and Clark gone, Pena’s now going to get his chance to shine. And I don’t just see him as a replacement…I think the next two years Pena is going to become a legitimate low block option for Nova, and one of the best frontcourt players in the Big East.
Ahmad Nivins: Regardless of how St. Joe’s finished the year (as Pete says, it was a disappointing year…I’m very surprised the Tasheed Carr/Govens/Nivins/G Williamson combo did not fair better)…Nivins may well be one of the least talked about forwards in the country. The guy can flat out ball. Great bball IQ, great rebounder (offensive and defensive), very nice 15 foot jumpshot, can score with back to the basket. I’m sure he’ll be picked up by a team in Europe, and hopefully he can be one of the college seniors to get his stock to rise enough in pre-draft camps to be chosen in the 2nd round for the NBA. At 6′9, and with his quickness, I’d certainly take him over many others draft boards have going late.
Adam-
HATE each other. I guess when you grow up in the area, you tend to like all the Big-5 teams, but if you go to Nova or SJU, it’s different. Didn’t even know the game between the 2 of them was called “the Holy War” until a couple years ago either.
Dave T-
Great point on Pena. really disappointing this year. Is really going to have to step it up next year. He’s got the ability to. I could see them starting King or Stokes at “Forward” next year and him being the only big man on the court a lot.
I’ll give the standard answers to why does SJU hate Nova: jealousy and difference in collars (blue/white).
But back to Nova. This team has that killer instinct and is locked in right now. Their kids won’t ever back down or give up, and are playing as the most cohesive TEAM left in the Tournament. Keep in mind they only show 42% last night and Reynolds has yet to go off in the Tournament. Pitt should be very scared.
How about the Boston fans that night? There was “some” concern from the Wildcats regarding how the fans would treat them given their city’s sports rivalry with Philadelphia. But they were great and were actually cheering the loudest for the Wildcats! Thank you Boston fans!
Rob: That’s what is great about Duke…they are the sports anomaly that can bring Philly, New York, Boston and DC fans together in brotherhood. A brotherhood of hatred against the blue and white. I love the fact that we all hate Duke more than each of our respective city’s sports teams…god that win last night was great. That’s TWO national, storied programs with amazing basketball histories we have not just beaten, but SPANKED AND STOMPED ON, two games straight in the tournament.
Pete: I absolutely agree that J Wright will be playing a lot of small ball lineup next year. Redding, Stokes and T King will most definitely be logging time in at the PF slot to make a four guard lineup with the 6′8 post option in Pena. J Wright and Tom Crean definitely make the top 5 list of big conference coaches that embrace small, quick, guard oriented lineups with a one athletic, or sound, post player.
Big East: Bout freaking time all the ACC pundits are getting shut the hell up by the deep runs all the Big East teams are making in the tournament. I just cannot believe people were legitimately, for half the regular season, comparing teams like Florida St, Boston College, Virginia Tech and Maryland (Clemson I really like, their loss was a fluke) to the 4-6 teams in the Big East like Nova, Syracuse and Marquette. The whole Big East/ACC argument was just ludicrous to me all year…three teams that finished mediocre-bad in the BE (N-Dame, G-town, Providence, Cincinnati) trump most middle tier ACC teams in sheer talent.
There is also the fact that if Dominic James did not get hurt for Marquette, the Golden Eagles would have also been a legitimate Elite Eight candidate. Nova and Marquette were really starting to peak at the same time in late January-early February, and when D James went down, as impressive as Marquette’s play was after that for losing such an important piece, Nova did a great job of taking advantage oftheir loss to climb in the standings.
J.Bilas on E.S.P.N. radio this morning;” They are a team of MEN who fight you tooth and nail, if you ballscreen they trap you and they basically take your will away”. He really seemed impressed with Nova, pretty good for an exduke player.
