We won how? Phils starters, Ruiz, take series from Yanks

by Pete on May 25, 2009

Well that was certainly an exciting series, and CERTAINLY more exciting than it should have been. You had great pitching, lots of HR, a couple plays at the plate, clutch hits, blown saves, a first-MLB-game HR and Phillies fans outcheering Yankees fans.

The Phils won 2 of 3, but it really should have been a sweep, with Brad Lidge giving up 3 runs before getting even the 2nd out on Saturday. But you can’t do too much complaining about getting 2 out of 3 in New York against a team coming in on a 9 game winning streak.

2009: 24-18
2008: 23-19
2007: 21-21

Player of the Series: Carlos Ruiz (6 for 8, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 SB, 2 caught stealing, 2 plate blocks)
Goat of the Series: Brad Lidge ( 1.1 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 2 Blown Saves)

The Good News

  • It was a great relief to finally, 40 games into the season, get 3 good starts in the same series. Against a really good, really hot offensive team no less.
  • The best sign was JA Happ’s start. It’s almost as if he should have been in the rotation earlier! He was tough to hit using mostly his fastball, was efficient with his pitches (75 in 6 IP) and obviously wasn’t easily rattled. I really, really hope this is the start of a several-year stint in the rotation for him.
  • Aside from Lidge, we really played well this series and it reminded me of the playoff games where we won with our pitching and defense and our offense got enough hits to get the wins.
  • Myers has given up 3 ER or less in 6 of his last 7 starts.
  • John Mayberry’s HR was the best moment of the series (even though Fox kept showing the wrong person for his dad). He seems to have a long swing like Howard, which tells me he can hit some HR, but is also probably slump-prone. I wish we could see more of him.
  • Carlos Ruiz looked like the Ruiz of the playoffs. His average went from .236 to .302 and he really showcased his defensive abilities. He must like the big stage.
  • Our defense shined this weekend, and we continue to lead the NL in least errors.

The Bad News

  • In a world without salaries, reputation and emotion – Ryan Madson supplants Brad Lidge as (temporary) closer tonight. Not sure Charlie is ready to go there yet though. Like Moyer, I don’t know how long you can keep parading him out there when he’s pitching so poorly. Send him to Lehigh or put him in the 6-7th inning role for awhile. But he can’t “work it out” in these big time situations. Luckily, we get JC Romero back in just 8 games.
  • I would have liked to see more of Sergio Escalona before they sent him back down.

Series Preview: Marlins at Phillies

So the question will be: Can the Phillies avoid a letdown series after what must have been an emotionally draining series in New York? The Marlins come in at 9-24 since their 11-1 start, but the Phillies have both Moyer and Blanton on the mound, so who knows.

Three Questions for the Series

  1. Already said it…can we avoid a letdown series?
  2. Will Lidge get a chance to shake off his past 2 outings?
  3. Can the Phillies finally start playing at home like they have on the road?

Prediction

The last two series I’ve predicted losses and we’ve won them, so now I’m all mental about this thinking I should keep picking against them so they win. But, I can’t start predicting like that, so I’m going to go with a series win. Moyer has handled the Marlins and hopefully won’t get shelled, and the Marlins have been one of the worst teams in baseball for the past month or so, so we really, really should take 2 of 3 at home.

It was a great series

Pete,
Under the Good News for the series you should have put something about how the Phillies fans took over the new Yankee Stadium…when Ibanez came up I thought Yankee fans we booing him because he had been killing the ball against them but it was actually the overwhelming amount of Phillies fans doing a “RAUUUUUUUUUL” chant…when FOX showed the stands there was a lot of red…whenever the Phillies made a positive play it the crowd sounded like a home crowd…I seriously think it was 50/50 as far as the breakdown of Phillies vs. Yanks fans…I don’t know if this was a testament to how badly the real Yankees fans have gotten priced out of that stadium or how good our fans our but it was a good showing of Phillies fans regardless….

How frustrating is it when WES HELMS of all of the players on the Marlins has to kill us for 4 RBIs?…why would Charlie put Park in in a close game?

4 Pete 05.25.09 at 8:44 pm

I did say we “outcheered them.”

Wes Helms is going Rod Barajas on us here. It’s infuriating.

Sorry,  missed that….

can anyone tell me why Victorino tried to steal 2nd in the 9th with us down 2 and Stairs up against a hard throwing fastball pitcher? That was idiotic.

annoying loss. Helms should have been struck out before he hit that HR.

The only reason I can think of that Victorino would steal is if he thought the Marlins would let him since they were up two and that run wouldn’t matter.  And it would take the double play away.

Moyer was frustrating tonight – it seemed like every ball was hard hit even the outs.  If he continues to pitch like this they gotta do something with him…but what?

Did anyone hear if Victorino steal attempt was his idea or the coaching staff’s?

9 Dannie 05.26.09 at 8:21 am

Nevermind Shane said he “f’d up.”  It was on him.  Charlie said it was a mistake as well.

He said he didn’t want to get doubled off, but he had to be safe.  Lindstrom’s delivery to the plate was slower than average and he thought he could make it.  Guess he didn’t account for the pace of the pitch as well.

First round of all-star voting is out…

http://philadelphia.phillies.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090526&content_id=4960488&vkey=allstar2009&fext=.jsp

Utley is a shoo-in to start. Howard has no shot against Pujols, and Rollins has a shot if he starts playing. Ibanez is 6th right now, so every one go vote and get him ahead of Beltran. You have to think the Phillies having such good home attendance will help us here.

11 jurnee16 05.26.09 at 5:40 pm

Pete,
Since Charlie is the manager doesn’t he select the reserve position players? While I hope we are able to vote our guys into starting spots wouldn’t Charlie be able to pick Howard and Ibanez as reserves as long as they are deserving (or not I guess) if they don’t get enough votes?  That way we would avoid having a bunch of snubs like we  have in the past with Burrell and Hamels last year and Rollins two years ago.

12 jurnee16 05.26.09 at 9:02 pm

Damn…I thought Howard had finally learned how to make the throw to 2nd….

13 jurnee16 05.26.09 at 9:06 pm

Its a moot point now…Lidge bailed Howard out…maybe this is the start of Lidge turning things around…he looked good after walking the first guy on 4 pitches…at the very least this save should help his confidence….

great to see Blanton put a real good start together. I was unable to watch the game (at the Coldplay concert) how did he look? Was he getting hit hard and getting lucky? Was his velocity back up a little bit to 90-91?
