Update (Tuesday, 5:52pm): Buster Olney of ESPN is reporting that the Indians are scouting a bunch of Phillies pitchers, including Jason Knapp, to try to figure out who they would want in a deal that isn’t named Kyle Drabek. Knapp is probably the best pure arm in our system, but at 19, is 3-4 years away from the big club. The possibility of getting Lee for ‘09 and 2010 while keeping Drabek, Brown and Carrasco, is certainly intriguing.
With the Roy Halladay trade talks at a standstill, the Phillies appear as though they will turn their attention to Cliff Lee. Lee, 30, is 7-9 with a 3.14 ERA and 1.30 WHIP this season. The win-loss record means little, as the Indians have been horrible this season. Like Halladay, he is under contract through 2010. Unlike Halladay, he is lefty, won the Cy Young last year, costs less money, and will require less prospects to get a deal done.
So what would you consider a fair deal for Lee?
You have to think that the Phillies wouldn’t include Drabek or Brown in any deal for Lee since they are so reluctant to give them up for Halladay. That leaves J.A. Happ, Michael Taylor, Carlos Carrasco, Jason Donald and Lou Marson as the major league ready prospects (which is what the Indians want) that could be included (there are others that could be tacked on, but let’s keep this simple).
The word is that the Indians want 2 pitchers in the deal, but I don’t think the Phillies would include Happ and Carrasco. They would probably try to substitute Taylor for one of them, as both Brown and Taylor will have a hard time breaking into the majors in the next 2 years. So let’s assume that a fair deal would be Happ/Carrasco, Taylor and Marson/Donald/other (likely Donald as the Indians top prospect is a catcher).
Would you guys make that deal? If so, which pitcher would you include? If you include Carrasco, you have 4 lefties in the rotation not just this year, but next. You could also argue that he is still more valuable than Happ since he is 4 years younger and some think has more upside. You also have no place in the rotation for Pedro Martinez, who has impressed scouts thus far and you just gave $1 million to be a starter.
If you include Happ, you are diminishing your current rotation and assuming that Martinez and/or Rodrigo Lopez can handle the 5th spot for the rest of the year (it certainly seems like they can). Happ also currently has better numbers than Lee and is under the Phillies control for 5 more years. He probably won’t be winning any Cy Young’s, but is Lee that much better than Happ?
I would still prefer to give up Drabek and Brown and land Halladay, but keeping the both of them and still landing last year’s Cy Young winner has a good deal of appeal. What do you think? Would you make this trade for Lee? Would you prefer getting Lee over Halladay while keeping our top prospects? Would the package I proposed even get a deal done considering the other teams that would be involved with a lower price tag?
note: I am indeed aware that the ACTUAL major league squad is currently playing games, and playing quite well. Feel free to talk about the games here. I’ll try to get something non-trade deadline related up before the Giants series. But we all know this stuff is more fun to talk about.

Halladay trade rotation this year and next (keeping Happ, losing Drabek):
Halladay, Hamels, Happ, Blanton, Moyer
That would keep all starting pitcher prospects in the minors an extra year
Halladay trade rotation this year and next (losing Happ, keeping Drabek):
Halladay, Hamels, Blanton, Moyer, Drabek/Carrasco/others that impressed
Give young pitchers a chance
Lee trade rotation (keeping happ losing carrasco)
Lee, Hamels, Blanton, Happ, Drabek/Moyer
Lee trade rotation (Losing happ keeping carrasco)
Lee, Hamels, Blanton, Moyer, Drabek/carrasco
No moves rotation
Hamels, Happ, Blanton, Moyer, Drabek/Carrasco
i am not sure if these rotations right but it seems like thats what they would look like
I think it is gonna take Happ and Carrasco, maybe Happ and Knapp as Carrasco has lost a lot of merit in the last few months. Even though I still have faith in him and pray he is not a throw-in in any deal. After the two pitchers, I think Taylor alone gets it done. Not Marson, they have Shoppach and Donald appeals to no one but the Phillies and maybe the Jays. That said, I would rather get Lee without giving up Drabek and Brown, and I absolutely love Roy Halladay. Think about this for a minute…Next year with Halladay’s contract, there is no chance of re-signing Myers, but with Lee we can. Hamels, Lee, Myers, Blanton and Moyer/Drabek. As opposed to Hamels, Halladay, Blanton, Moyer?, no prospects left to fill in. Then 2011 we are really screwed, not only on the mound, but who fills in anywhere?

That is really scary, also you have to expect some decline in Ibanez in his third year, and from what I read and hear, this Brown kid is an absolute stud. Think about it, all the hype from taylor and Drabek in the minors so far this season and Brown being hurt and still in Clearwater. He is still ranked almost ten slots higher in BA’s top 50. That is saying something, he has the attitude, the look and the skills to be an all star on this roster. I want Halladay and I wanna win this year and next, but I wanna be in the playoffs for the next ten years and history tells you that these blockbuster deals don’t get you there and destroy good farms.
I would want to give up considerably less in a trade for Lee.. i would give carrasco and donald no problem. I like donald but i just dont think we need a top tier SS in our system.. jimmy rollins slump early this season showed all we need is a defensive player at that position and i’m more inclined to give up a position player for a top pitcher in the game right now.. i like carrasco but would rather have the upside of drabek wish he woulda pitched just a little bit better this year (carrasco).. either way i hope they make a move before the deadline i think we need it to put us in a almost garaunteed position to be playing at the same time we were last year..
Rights to Robert E. Lee, Annabel Lee, Pinky Lee, Peggy Lee, Clyde Lee, Bill “Spaceman” Lee, Bob Lee, Bruce Lee, Spike Lee and Travis Lee. Final offer.
If you were really callous and willing to take a few years of pain I would send whatever is needed for Halladay and then in 2-3 years gut the team for prospects. You have to think that Howard, Werth, Rollins and maybe even Utley or Hammels could bring in a great hoard of prospects.
Then you rebuild for 2-3 years and come back with a great young team.
If I was playing a video game (like Baseball Mogul) that would be the smart move… but in real life I want them to win now and be in a position to continue winning without a downturn. I’m hoping Toronto blinks and they don’t have to “sell the farm” but I guess we will know soon enough.
Jayson Stark seemed to think that Drabek would have to be involved in a do-able deal for Lee as well. That would be a deal killer for me (for Lee, not for Halladay).
can someone please send this link to ruben amaro?

GET IT DONE!!!
I’m with you Pete…it makes no sense to give up Happ for Lee…I would offer Carrasco, Taylor, and maybe a couple of midlevel prospects and thats it…I would give up anything for Halladay though….
i know we haven’t done much talking about the actual team, but the Phillies hitters have done a PHENOMENAL job of working the count against Haren tonight, who now has thrown 102 pitches through just 4.1 IP.
also – we should probably thank the diamondbacks fielders for not really knowing how to throw a baseball
9 runs in 10 hits so far against Arizona. Something to do with power and lousy defense.
