WOW! Nnamdi Asomugha to the EAGLES!

This will be short because I am walking out the door, but some serious news just broke.

The Eagles, who just landed Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie in the Kolb deal, have also landed the top player in free agency, and arguably the best CB in football, Nnamdi Asomugha.

Nnamdi signed a 5 year, $60 million deal, with $25 million guaranteed.

This gives us the best CB group in the NFL, provided we keep them all of course. You wonder if this move will result in an Asante Samuel trade or release.

Regardless, a spectacular move for the Eagles, and proof that they are doing whatever it takes to win a Super Bowl now.

What a week in Philly…

    CELEBRATIONS PETE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Apparently the talks really started heating up with him yesterday. This is pretty crazy. Moving Asante for a desperate team thats way below the cap floor and needs a corner for a first or second round pick shouldnt be all too difficult and im all for it. This compares to the Cliff Lee megadeal of last offseason. I seriously cant believe it!!! I just hope RAJ doesnt try to outdo the Eagles by making that dumbass HP trade…

Name reminds me of the Inquirer’s word jumble.

  4. why would you release Samuel. He is either gonna be a Philadelphia Eagles or be traded, hopefully for a 1st rd pick

  5. Chris McC. says:

Screw trading Samuel for a 1st round pick. Unless they’re allowed to to go draft the best LB in college football tomorrow. They need LB’s. They should try to get one with Asante. That is, if they decide to trade him.

  6. tk76 says:

This is a lot like when they Signed Halladay and then traded Lee.

maybe they will learn from the Phils that they should have kept Lee around the first time…  Because  NA/Asante/DRC is akin to Halladay/Lee/Hamels.  But ego-wise I’m not sure they can go with that trio.

So you think they would have done the Kolb trade had they known they would get NA?  And what would DRC get you in a trade?

    • Adam B. says:

DRC definitely a first rounder – he’s young and cheap for the next two years. Asante I’m not so sure you can get a first rounder for. He’s under contract (it’s not a horrible contract) for the next three years and is 30 yrs old I believe.

I don’t think you can use a 3 aces comparison to 3 cbs. I agree that it sets the eagles up for pretty much any situation that may occur in the passing game (including injury but not factoring in the uncertainty at safety)

    Cullen Jenkins Pete!!!!

  8. Chris McC. says:

I spent all of last season (exception being the second Ginats game, DJ’s return) in complete apathy. They’re doing quite a bit to get me interested again. DRC, Nnamdi, Young and now Cullen Jenkins.

They’re really thin at linebacker though.

    • Adam B. says:

They got young guys that can learn. The strategy is to try to get up quick on offense a la the Colts and just let the front line rush the QB and try to intercept the ball. Then just pile on the points or run out the ball with a solid running game. This is definitely going to be an exciting year. The Eagles already have ELEVEN picks in next year’s draft.

      • Stu says:

“or run out the ball with a solid running game.”

C’mon dude, Andy Reid running out the clock with a running game???  You and I know he’ll be passing (incomplete) on 2nd and 10 when the other team is out of timeouts under 2 mins as an element of “surprise”

        • Chris McC. says:

This is a large part of my apathy. Reid is far too exhausting to root for.

        • Adam B. says:

Reid isn’t going to be passing the rock when the Birds are up 35-10 with 7 minutes left in the fourth.

          • joof says:

I would be shocked if andy reid ran the ball on most of the 3rd and 3 and 4th and 2, let alone if he ran the ball down other teams throats. You really think the eagles will be up 35-10 all the time? I hope you’re right ‘) (although I have become accustomed to reid struggling to make the most fundemental adjustments time and time again). He is a very good coach, but I cant help but notice that he: can not run a 2 min drill, use his time outs properly, ignore key positions in random years (OL last year, WR in the first half of 2000′s, LB’s, FB, KR etc) .

  9. VIraj says:

Santonio Holmes got 5 years/50 million… I haven’t done advanced statistical analysis but DeSean is younger, more explosive, and might have even better numbers. Eagles haven’t shelled out like that for a receiver in recent history but it seems like DeSean could command it.

  10. phillyfan says:

I am shocked they haven’t addressed their greatest area of need – OL.  They aren’t sniffing the SB without some upgrading there.  Why do we need another CB with Cromartie and Samuel.  too much money for a 30 year old corner with 8 years of tire off the tread.  It wasn’t even an area of need after the Kolb trade.

    • Adam B. says:

Annnnddd they signed an offensive lineman today.

    • Pat says:

When you have a chance to get arguably the best player at a position in his prime at a reasonable cap hit, you have to do it. Regardless of if it was a need, you focus on making the team better.
What OL were out there that you wanted? There just weren’t enough UFA that were realistically going anywhere without a huge contact.

  11. phillyfan says:

Cursed franchise.  Two huge cogs, Patterson and Maclin, sidelined by non-football injuries and Abrihim lost for season before practice even starts.  We haven’t even got into pre-season where we know the eagles will lose another 4-5 players for the year.

Seems like this crap happens every year.  No blame, just a cursed franchise.

  12. The Real Rob says:

The Eagles signed WR Steve Smith.  Great move by simply weakening the Giants!
